Chereads / New Horizons: Dawn / Chapter 36 - Awakening of Lumis

Chapter 36 - Awakening of Lumis

Dawn's workshop was a fascinating blend of modern technology and arcane paraphernalia. Diagrams and blueprints were plastered on one wall, while another showcased a collection of carefully labeled cores, each possessing unique properties and histories. Amid the organized chaos of soldering irons, circuit boards, and a myriad of tools, a sturdy workbench dominated the center of the room. On it, she had carefully placed the core she had recently acquired — an old yet pristine heart of one of the SerpentCoil Strikers.

There was a certain electricity in the air, the kind that heralds the birth of something unprecedented. Dawn, with deft fingers, began to set up the components around the core. A digital interface here, a mystic rune there — while the ritual itself was straightforward, she took extra care, knowing that this core was unlike any other. It was evident that it held vast information and unparalleled power within its confines.

Initiating the summoning, she began a soft chant, her words synchronizing with the delicate movements of her fingers over the digital interface. It wasn't long before the core responded. A pulse, gentle at first, then gradually gaining momentum, emanated from the core, sending ripples across the tools and components on her workbench.

The room's lights dimmed momentarily, then, in a crescendo of both tech and magic, the core unleashed its bound energy. Emerging from the dwindling luminance, the Circuit Serpent manifested before Dawn's eyes.

The sight was breathtaking.

This metallic creature seemed to shimmer and dance with an internal light, its sleek body reflecting the room's many gadgets and trinkets. Its scales, which looked as if they were forged by the most skilled of craftsmen, were etched with circuits so tiny that they seemed to be a mere whisper of a design. But even so, they pulsed with an azure glow, a testament to the serpent's vibrant electrical essence.

Its eyes, currently the calmest shade of blue, surveyed the room with an intelligence that belied its mechanical nature. They seemed to take in everything — the gadgets, the runes, and most importantly, Dawn herself. The delicate tendrils protruding from its nodes moved in a rhythmic fashion, almost like they were tasting the very air for electronic and mystical signals. Every so often, its forked tongue would dart out, acting as an antenna, capturing frequencies beyond normal perception.

Dawn, her initial astonishment giving way to professional curiosity, stepped closer, reaching out to touch the serpent's cool metallic form. The Circuit Serpent, this marvelous synthesis of technology and magic, was her newest creation, and with it, a plethora of possibilities just waited to be explored.

Her first and very own familiar. Unlike Summons, they were more permanent in how long they lasted. Able to grow and evolve alongside their owners.

The Circuit Serpent, at first glance, might seem like a glistening metallic snake, but its elegance lies in its intricate details. Measuring around seven feet in length, its body is a sleek, fluid composition of polished chrome and shimmering scales. These scales aren't organic but finely crafted hexagonal plates of conductive metal. Each plate is etched with infinitesimally tiny circuit patterns that glow faintly with a soft azure hue, making the serpent appear as though it's pulsing with electrical life. Its eyes are twin orbs of liquid crystal, which can shift in color depending on its mood or functionality – from the serene blue of a calm state to the fiery red when on the defensive.

Interspersed between its scales are nodes, from which delicate tendrils of wire-like fibers emerge. These tendrils act as external nerves, letting the serpent interface with technology, draw power, or transmit data. Its forked tongue, which it often flicks out, is not just for sensing its environment, but it's also an antenna, finely attuned to electronic and magical frequencies alike.

Dawn's fingers lingered on the Circuit Serpent's sleek frame. The coolness of its body felt calming under her touch. Its scales, while made of metal, were not cold and lifeless. Instead, they radiated a soft warmth and hum, echoing the life force that ran within. The serpent tilted its head, meeting her gaze with its liquid crystal eyes. It was a sentient connection, a meshing of two intellects. They were familiar and yet strangers, standing on the precipice of mutual understanding.

She took a deep breath, her mind racing with a whirlwind of emotions — exhilaration, pride, and a hint of trepidation. The Circuit Serpent wasn't a mere summon. It was a familiar — an entity bound to her, ready to evolve, learn, and grow by her side.

Dawn's curiosity got the better of her as she initiated a gentle interface with the serpent. Using the delicate tendrils on its body, the serpent responded, intertwining its fibers with the intricate circuitry on her gloves. This connection, a dance between the arcane and digital, allowed her to communicate and command. A flood of information passed between them, binary code merging with arcane runes, creating a unique language that only they could comprehend.

Images flashed in her mind — glimpses of the SerpentCoil Strikers' history, the battles they had fought, and the knowledge they had amassed. But there were also newer, less defined memories, ones that the Circuit Serpent was still processing, still understanding. Moments in the workshop, Dawn's touch, the feel of the air around them.

Breaking the connection, Dawn took a moment to collect herself. The sheer volume of information was overwhelming, and she realized the potential of what she had in front of her. Not just a reservoir of knowledge, but a partner. She pondered the adventures they might embark on, the challenges they would face, and the victories they would celebrate together.

The Circuit Serpent, sensing her introspection, coiled up on the workbench and gave a soft, electronic chirr, its body shimmering in a comforting blue hue. Dawn chuckled, the sound light and genuine, "I suppose we'll need a name for you, won't we?"

The serpent's eyes sparkled with intrigue and anticipation, awaiting the identity it would be given.

"How about 'Lumis'?" Dawn mused, watching for the serpent's reaction.

Lumis responded with an appreciative flicker of its scales, the azure light pulsing brighter for a moment, signaling its approval.

Dawn smiled, feeling an unspoken bond strengthening between them. "Lumis it is. Welcome to the family." The journey of a mage and her familiar, navigating the blurred lines between technology and magic, had just begun.

Dawn's workshop, filled with a medley of enchanting and mechanical sounds, had always been her sanctum. But now, with Lumis by her side, there was an added layer of companionship that she hadn't felt in quite some time. Lumis seemed to have a curious nature, its forked tongue darting out frequently, sensing and absorbing the environment around it. It seemed especially interested in her tools and the various contraptions she had scattered around.

She decided to spend a bit of her day revisiting some of her old magical practices. With Lumis around, she felt an invigorated connection to her magical roots. On a secluded patch of land outside her tent, she drew a simple summoning circle. The intent wasn't to call forth another entity but rather to channel and concentrate her latent energies. Lumis watched keenly, its body glowing rhythmically with the cadence of her chants.

Drawing on the mana around her, she conjured elemental displays of fire and water, the flames dancing in tandem with water droplets that floated, defying gravity. She had been so engrossed in the technological realm recently that she'd forgotten the sheer thrill of raw magic. Lumis seemed to resonate with her, the tendrils on its body reacting to the spells she wove, picking up frequencies of her power.

After her magical exercise, feeling refreshed, Dawn returned to her workshop. With Lumis's enhanced senses and her newfound energy, she decided to tackle the upgrades she had been planning for her gear. The pristine core from the SerpentCoil Striker wasn't the only valuable item she had acquired recently. There were other materials - rare metals and enchanted crystals - that had been waiting for the right project.

She started with her gloves, the primary interface for most of her contraptions. Weaving in a fine mesh made of the new material, she integrated it with Lumis's tendrils. This allowed her to remotely access and control her devices. Lumis became a living extension of her gear, amplifying its capabilities.

Hours seemed to pass like minutes. By the time she finished, the sun was setting, casting a golden hue over the camp. Her gloves now had an added layer of armor, a sleek chrome finish that matched Lumis's scales, and the ability to channel magic more efficiently.

She spent a moment as she sat on the floor, Lumis coiled beside her, as she slowly stroked over its scales. It's eyes changing colour to a soft green as it half closed them. Reflecting its comfort at the gestor.

.

A short while later, the comfort between the two was broken by a knock at the door. "Come in!" Dawn called out, remaining seated on the floor with Lumis.

The door opening to show Lena on the other side. "Hey. We got another mission." She announced. Giving Dawn a strange look at the metallic snake wrapped around her legs as she stroked it like a pet.

Lena's eyes widened a touch as she took in the sight of the shimmering Circuit Serpent. "Dawn... what is this?" she inquired, her voice holding a hint of astonishment.

"It's... a new direction for me," Dawn admitted, slightly hesitant, as if expecting skepticism. "His name's Lumis. A familiar, a blending of magic and machinery. A Circuit Serpent."

Lena blinked, her confusion evident. "Magic? Since when do you dabble in magic? I thought tech was your forte."

Dawn took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. "It was, and it still is. But I've been studying the arcane arts in secret for a while now. I wasn't sure if I could merge it successfully with tech, but Lumis is the culmination of that effort."

Lena stepped closer, her initial surprise giving way to fascination. "Why keep it a secret?" she asked, her voice softer now.

Dawn looked down, her fingers gently stroking Lumis. "I was afraid of failing, of being seen as a novice again after establishing myself in tech. Magic is... different, unpredictable. I wanted to be sure before I revealed anything."

Lena's smirk returned, but it was gentle this time. "You always were one to surprise us." She bent down, cautiously extending a hand towards Lumis. "May I?"

Dawn nodded, watching as Lena's fingers brushed against the serpent's scales, feeling the soft glow of energy emanating from him. "It's truly remarkable, Dawn," Lena whispered. "But you need to brief the team. They should know."

"I know," Dawn replied, her voice firm. "I will. I just wanted the right moment, and I guess Lumis chose it for me."

Lena stood up straight, her mission-focused demeanor snapping back into place. "Alright then. We have work to do. But promise me, no more hiding. Especially not something as impressive as this."

Dawn smiled, grateful for the support. "Promise."

With a mutual nod, the two women delved into the details of their impending mission, with Lumis coiled protectively around Dawn's arm as the two headed for where the rest of the team was.

Inside the main briefing room, the team sat around a large, rugged table. The room itself was a balance between high-tech and practicality – screens filled with data were interspersed with well-worn gear, and a few personal trinkets scattered about bore testimony to the many missions and experiences the team had shared.

Dawn took a deep breath, feeling the weight of every gaze upon her as Lumis remained coiled around her arm. The soft, pulsating glow from the serpent provided a gentle illumination that contrasted with the room's dim lighting.

Marek was the first to break the silence. His sharp eyes, usually scanning for distant targets, now fixed on Lumis. "That's a mighty fine piece of tech, Dawn. But it feels... different. What is it?"

Elian raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued. "Is it some sort of advanced communication tool?" he queried, ever the expert in signals and interfaces.

Dawn swallowed, finding her voice. "It's more than just tech. It's... magic. His name's Lumis."

There was a collective intake of breath. Tasha, ever the more outspoken twin, leaned forward. "Magic? Since when did you start playing with the arcane?"

Lila, more measured, added, "It's beautiful, but it seems like a departure from what we know of you."

Nia, her fingers always stained with chemical reagents, seemed fascinated. "How does it work? Does it have any medicinal properties? Any defense against the Mechanoid toxins?"

Elian looked slightly stunned. "Magic and tech combined? That's uncharted territory, even for us."

Lena, always the voice of reason, interjected, "Dawn, you need to explain. Clearly."

Taking another steadying breath, Dawn began, "During one of our missions, I came into contact with an ancient Shard. It unintentionally merged with my body, binding to my bloodline and... evolving it. This change allowed me to harness magic. I've been secretly studying it, trying to integrate it with our tech. Lumis," she said, caressing the Circuit Serpent, "is the result."

Roark, usually stoic and silent, rumbled, "And the applications in defense?"

Dawn replied, "Lumis can interface with tech, draw power, and transmit data. And given its magical properties, I believe he can help bolster our defenses, especially against the Mechanoids."

Kira, always intrigued by new gear, asked, "And upgrades? Enhancements?"

Jace, his fingers dancing over a holographic interface, spoke up, "The potential for AI integration and analysis is vast. Dawn, we could use Lumis to gain an edge."

Dawn nodded, feeling a rush of relief at the team's mixed reactions of fascination, concern, and eagerness to understand. "I should've told you all sooner. I apologize for that. But I hope Lumis can prove his worth on our missions."

Lena gave a reassuring smile. "You're family, Dawn. We trust you. But this... it's a game-changer. Let's work together to understand and harness this new power."

As the team delved deeper into strategies and plans, Dawn felt the warmth of acceptance and the thrill of new possibilities. The journey with Lumis had just begun.

"Is it compatible with the new AR navigation system? Can it provide real-time feedback during our missions?"

Dawn nodded, "Yes, Lumis can integrate with our systems. I've already successfully connected him to my own interface. His sensory tendrils pick up both electronic and magical frequencies, giving us an advantage in sensing hidden traps or magic wards. And his ability to communicate with me means we can make on-the-fly adjustments during critical situations."

Jace, the team's strategic planner, mused aloud, "So, a living tool with both tech and magic capabilities. It opens doors for espionage, data gathering, and counter-magic operations."

Dawn interjected, "But he's not just a tool, he's sentient. We need to remember that."

Lena added, "That's crucial. We're not just adding a new piece of equipment, but a new member to our team. Lumis's wellbeing should be a priority."

Marek chuckled, "Never thought I'd see the day we'd have a magical snake on our squad."

Lila, ever the protective one, asked, "But can he defend himself? If he's with you on the frontlines, he'll be a target."

Dawn smiled confidently, "His scales aren't just for show. They're incredibly durable, and he's quite agile. Plus, the combination of magic and tech gives him unique defensive capabilities. I wouldn't bring him into the field if I thought he was defenseless."

Elian grinned, "Sounds like we've got ourselves an edge. Welcome to the team, Lumis."

The Circuit Serpent, Lumis, uncoiled from Dawn's arm, moving gracefully onto the table. Its body pulsed with a radiant azure hue, and its eyes shifted to a shade of gold, a sign of acknowledgment and acceptance.

The team shared glances of approval, intrigue, and genuine excitement.
