Chereads / New Horizons: Dawn / Chapter 26 - Between Brawn and Blueprint

Chapter 26 - Between Brawn and Blueprint

Waking up, Dawn took a moment as she laid with her eyes closed. Despite the rough bed, she had slept better then she had in a long while. The combination of exhaustion and weights off her back let her relax more then she usually could.

As she opened her eyes. The room was bathed in a dim light that seemed to seep through every crack, casting an eerie glow that offered little comfort. She sat up with a start, looking around the room wildly. Before remembering where she was, the similar lighting to her room in Venin had caused her a start. Yet the table and gadgets around the room reminded her that she was still safe.

'Definitely need to get some things to put around.' Thought Dawn.

Taking a deep breath to settle her nerves, Dawn pushed the covers aside and swung her legs over the edge of the bed. The cool floor beneath her feet served as a tactile reminder of her new environment.

Stretching her limbs, she pondered the events of the previous day. The memories came rushing back: Nexhaven, Eldric, the tests, and the camaraderie she had begun to feel with her new team. Despite her initial discomfort, a small smile tugged at her lips. It felt good to be a part of something bigger, to belong.

She ambled over to the window, the bioluminescent glow illuminating the expanse of the Nexus beyond. As the early risers went about their duties, Dawn felt a pang of determination to prove herself worthy of their trust.

Shaking off her reverie, she approached the desk. The gadgets that Kira had pointed out the previous day were a jumble of unfamiliar tech, but they also represented a gateway to knowledge and skills she had yet to master. She picked up a handheld device, its surface covered in symbols and touch-sensitive controls, and tried to figure out its purpose.

A soft chime from the door interrupted her thoughts. "Come in," she called out.

The door slid open to reveal Lena, holding a tray with a steaming cup of something aromatic and a plate of food. "Morning, newbie," she greeted with a playful smirk. "Thought you might need some sustenance before your first real day here."

Dawn chuckled, "Thanks, Lena. I was just trying to make sense of all this," she gestured towards the pile of gadgets.

Lena placed the tray on the table, pouring a cup for herself. "You'll get the hang of it. And Kira is always eager to give a crash course on anything tech-related."

As they shared their breakfast, Lena filled Dawn in on the day's schedule. "Eldric wants you in the main hall for a briefing at 0800. After that, Roark wants to see how you handle physical training, and in the afternoon, Kira has a tech session lined up for you."

Dawn raised an eyebrow, "Sounds like a packed day."

Lena winked, "Welcome to Nexhaven. We stay busy."

Dawn nodded, finishing her meal and feeling a rush of energy. The trepidation she had felt upon waking was now replaced with a growing anticipation. She was ready to face whatever the day had in store.

With a nod of gratitude to Lena, Dawn began preparing herself, mentally and physically, for the challenges ahead. She dressed in the uniform provided, tightened her boots, and with one last look at the room that signified a new chapter in her life, she stepped out into the heart of Nexhaven.

The main hall of Nexhaven was an expansive space, characterized by soaring arches and walls embedded with a shimmering bioluminescent material, giving the space a serene, ethereal glow. Groups of agents and operatives whispered among themselves, anticipation evident in their stances. At the front, a raised platform held a holographic projector, currently dormant.

Dawn arrived just as Eldric stepped onto the platform. He was a tall figure, with a commanding presence that was accentuated by his neatly-trimmed beard and sharp eyes. His gaze quickly found Dawn's, acknowledging her with a nod.

"Good morning," Eldric's voice resonated through the hall, capturing everyone's attention instantly. "Today, we have a new member joining our ranks, Dawn."

Dawn felt hundreds of eyes turn towards her, and while she fought the urge to shrink away, she stood tall, drawing on an inner reservoir of determination.

Eldric continued, "I know there are questions. Who is she? Why did she receive such rapid entry into our organization?" He paused for effect. "I'll tell you."

He looked directly at Dawn, "Dawn has information and skills that are vital to our current operations. More than that, she has shown an uncanny resilience and adaptability, even in her short time here."

He then addressed Dawn directly, "But this isn't about me speaking for you. It's about you proving your worth to this team. Do you wish to say something?"

Dawn cleared her throat, her voice steady, "I'm grateful for this opportunity. I know how strange and sudden my arrival here must seem to many of you. But I promise, I'm here to contribute, to learn, and to be a part of this community."

Eldric smiled, "Well said."

The murmurs in the hall seemed to agree with Dawn's sentiment. There were nods of approval, some still reserved but others more accepting.

Eldric continued, "Now, to the matter at hand. The reason I was able to aid Dawn so swiftly is twofold." He held up a hand to forestall any interruption. "First, my position here at Nexhaven allows me access to certain... resources and information channels that most do not. Second, and more importantly, I believe in recognizing potential and talent. It's how we grow stronger. Dawn's background, her unique skill set, and the intelligence she brings is crucial to a mission we're about to undertake."

Curiosity hung in the air. Dawn herself was intrigued. What mission was he referring to? What role would she play?

"We'll delve into the specifics soon," Eldric said. "For now, know that Dawn's presence here isn't an accident. It's a strategic choice."

He concluded the briefing with updates on other ongoing operations and then dismissed the assembly. As the operatives dispersed, Dawn felt a mixture of pride and anxiety. Her journey at Nexhaven had truly begun.

Eldric approached her, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You did well," he said softly. "Remember, every new beginning comes with its challenges. You're here for a reason."

Dawn nodded, feeling a bit overwhelmed but grateful for his support. "Thank you, Eldric."

With a nod, Eldric left her to ponder the unfolding mysteries of her new life at Nexhaven.

The briefing with Eldric, while illuminating, had been mentally taxing. Now, Dawn was heading towards a new challenge – her session with Roark. Her steps were hesitant as she approached the training area, a massive underground gymnasium that was reminiscent of a gladiator arena.

Unlike the rest of the facility, which bore a modern, sleek design, Roark's training ground exuded a raw, primal vibe. The floor was made of packed dirt, and the walls were lined with various weapons ranging from bladed to blunt, modern to ancient.

Roark stood in the center, his towering physique immediately demanding respect. He was sparring with another agent, moving with a grace that seemed impossible for someone of his size. Dawn took a moment to appreciate his skill, especially given the fact that Roark was known as the team's defender.

Their sparring ended, and Roark turned his gaze to Dawn, his eyes sharp but not unkind. "You're up," he declared, his deep voice echoing in the vast space.

Dawn swallowed, taking a deep breath. "I'm ready."

Roark raised an eyebrow, a hint of a smirk on his lips. "We'll see about that."

Their session began with a series of strength and agility tests. Though she was young, Dawn's time on the surface had endowed her with remarkable agility and stamina. However, Roark was looking for more than just raw talent. As a defender, he was responsible for protecting the team and was looking for any weaknesses in her defenses that enemies could exploit.

Roark quickly identified her overreliance on agility, often prioritizing dodging over blocking. "You're fast," he commented, "But you can't always dodge. Sometimes, you have to stand your ground and defend."

They transitioned into combat. Dawn wielded twin blades, her weapons of choice. Roark, on the other hand, chose a long staff. The two circled each other, the tension palpable.

Their spar was intense. Every move Dawn made was met with a counter from Roark, teaching her the importance of defense. Several times, she found herself on the back foot, only to be gently corrected by Roark.

She realized the depth of his experience; he wasn't just a brute force defender, he was a tactician. Every move had a purpose, every block was calculated.

The session ended with Dawn on her back, Roark's staff inches from her face. She was panting, sweat dripping from her brow. Yet, despite the exhaustion, she felt a sense of accomplishment.

Roark extended a hand, pulling her up. "You've got promise," he said, nodding appreciatively. "But remember, agility is just one tool in your arsenal. Defense is just as crucial."

Dawn, catching her breath, nodded. "Thank you, Roark. I've learned a lot today."

He chuckled, "This was just the beginning. We've got a lot of work to do."

As she left the training area, sore but enlightened, Dawn felt a newfound respect for Roark. His role as the team's defender wasn't just about physical strength, but about understanding the nuances of combat and protection. She looked forward to the next session, ready to learn and grow under his tutelage.

Dawn's footsteps echoed softly on the metal walkways as she made her way to Kira's lab, her mind still mulling over her session with Roark. However, her anticipation built with each step; tech was her forte, her realm. While the physical training had been a challenge, here, she would be in her element.

Kira's lab was a wonder to behold. The walls gleamed with silver and chrome, adorned with various devices and machinery, all humming and blinking rhythmically. Blueprints were pinned everywhere, and the scent of solder and fresh metal permeated the air. It was a mechanic's dream, and Dawn felt her heart rate quicken in excitement.

Kira, a tall woman with raven-black hair tied into a tight bun, stood by a workbench, her hands deep in the guts of some sort of device. Her blue eyes, magnified by her round glasses, looked up as Dawn entered. "Ah, the newest addition," she remarked, wiping her hands on a cloth. "Eldric briefed me on you. Mechanic, right?"

Dawn nodded, stepping closer. "Yes. I've always had a connection to machines, ever since I was little."

Kira smirked, "Let's see just how good you are."

The two of them began by going over various blueprints, with Kira asking Dawn to point out flaws or suggest improvements. To Kira's surprise, not only could Dawn identify potential problems, but she also offered innovative solutions. It became apparent that Dawn's unique gifts, her innate connection to mechanics, went beyond what a typical Mechanic Super possessed.

Then, Kira placed a complex device in front of Dawn, its inner workings a maze of gears, wires, and circuits. "Disassemble it and put it back together," she instructed.

Dawn's hands moved with precision, each motion deliberate. It was as if she was communicating with the device, understanding its every nuance. Kira watched in awe, realizing that Dawn's connection with machines was more profound than she had first believed.

Within minutes, the device was taken apart and then seamlessly reassembled, functioning even better than before.

Kira let out a low whistle. "Impressive. It seems there's a lot more to you than meets the eye."

Dawn smiled, her confidence restored after the humbling training with Roark. "Machines speak to me," she said, her voice soft, almost reverent. "It's like... they have souls, and I can hear them."

Kira looked thoughtful. "That's a rare gift, even among Mechanics. You'll be invaluable here."

What Dawn said was true. She could feel the machine before her. A beautiful world that danced in tandem to create life.

She knew that it was normal for an NPC to feel much closer then any Player could to their creations. But she felt she was a step further. There were some legendary level Mechanics that had skills revolving around how close they were to their creations, giving them great bonuses. But she didn't have any of those.

Kira leaned against the workbench, studying Dawn with a mix of curiosity and respect. "You said machines speak to you. What exactly do they say?"

Dawn paused, searching for the right words. "It's not like words, exactly. More like... feelings? Emotions. A hum of energy and life that vibrates with its own unique rhythm. Each machine has its own song."

Kira nodded thoughtfully. "Every mechanic I've known has described their bond with machines differently. Yours seems particularly intimate."

Dawn shrugged slightly, her gaze distant. "Maybe it's because I've always been alone, wandering from place to place. Machines were the only constant in my life, the only thing that didn't betray or abandon me."

A silence settled between them, filled only by the soft hum of the machines around them. Kira broke it with a small smile. "Well, you're not alone anymore. You have us."

Dawn met her gaze, the gratitude evident in her eyes. "Thank you, Kira. That means more to me than you know."

Kira clapped her hands together, her face brightening. "Alright, enough of this sentimental stuff. Let's get to work! I've got a project that could use your unique touch."

For the next few hours, the two mechanics were absorbed in their work. Dawn lost herself in the rhythm of creation, her hands dancing over the components with an ease that spoke of her deep connection with the machines. Kira was a willing and enthusiastic partner, her expertise complementing Dawn's intuitive understanding.

By the time they were done, they had crafted a device that was both elegant and efficient, its design bearing the hallmarks of both their styles.

Kira held it up, admiring their handiwork. "You know, with your skills and my experience, there's nothing we can't create."

Dawn grinned. "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful partnership."

The day's trials and triumphs had left Dawn drained but fulfilled. As she made her way back to her quarters, the bioluminescent glow of the Nexus guiding her, she couldn't help but marvel at the turn her life had taken. From a loner wandering the wastelands to a valued member of Nexhaven, all starting from a false life grown in a pod.

As she settled into bed, she allowed herself a moment of contentment. Whatever challenges tomorrow brought, she was ready to face them. With her new family by her side, she felt unstoppable. Lena, Roark, Kira, Jace, Eldric, Gralen, Lina.... Twilight. The faces of everyone she felt close to appearing in her mind. Everyone she wanted to defeat Venin for, to stop more coming threats. Although the Shattered World was isolated from the rest of the galaxy. She knew of coming threats that could threaten both her and everyone else. And she aimed to grow to stand at the front against such things.
