Chereads / New Horizons: Dawn / Chapter 27 - The Passage of Time

Chapter 27 - The Passage of Time

The month had been a whirlwind for Dawn within the confines of Nexhaven's sprawling facility. The hum of machines and the soft glow of advanced tech illuminated her path, as she treaded hallways that led to new realms every day. Though she had not set foot outside its steel and glass walls for real-world missions, she had journeyed through dense jungles dripping with humidity, trekked across arid deserts where virtual sandstorms stung her face, and navigated through neon-lit urban labyrinths. She faced adversaries ranging from rogue AI to cunning virtual insurgents, learning and adapting with each encounter. The plethora of scenarios in the facility's state-of-the-art virtual simulation rooms pushed her boundaries, allowing her imagination and skills to fuse in ways she had never anticipated.

Reaching Level 20 in her Mechanic class was a pivotal moment for Dawn, signifying a profound shift in her capabilities. This milestone was more than just an elevated status; it marked her initiation into the realm of the Supers. The new rank endowed her with the ability to fortify and enhance mechanical equipment to standards unattainable by regular mechanics. Each of her creations, when refined with her newfound skills, could match the collective output of a small team of normal technicians.

The virtual simulation rooms became Dawn's playground for these enhanced abilities. With her enhanced skills, she could modify a simple virtual drone, transforming it into a swift and nearly undetectable reconnaissance tool, capturing crucial data faster than before. Her toolkit expanded, now housing tools that could expedite the repair process, making what used to take hours now achievable in mere minutes.

In one challenging virtual mission, she faced a dilapidated bridge standing as the only path for her team. Using her Level 20 capabilities, she reinforced its structure in record time, ensuring safe passage for her squad. Another simulation had her swiftly upgrading a vehicle's engine, turning it from a modest transport into a roaring powerhouse, outpacing enemy pursuers with ease.

Though these achievements remained within the confines of the virtual realm, they showcased Dawn's potential. She wasn't just any mechanic now; she was a Super Mechanic, ready to amplify Nexhaven's operational prowess in the real world when the time came. Of course, as all Mechanics. What she needed most was time.

Eldric's guiding hand in Dawn's journey was unmistakable. Post-mission, the two would be found in one of Nexhaven's debriefing rooms, surrounded by holographic replays of critical moments. Eldric, with a critical eye, would pinpoint minute details — a hesitation here, a choice of gadget there. Dawn, ever-eager to learn, soaked in his words, making notes on her digital pad. They often had lengthy discussions about the virtual world's nuances and how they mirrored real-life challenges.

Roark's training sessions were legendary within Nexhaven, and Dawn was no exception to their rigor. In one memorable simulation, Dawn found herself amidst a raging sandstorm in a virtual desert. Roark taught her the importance of adaptability and endurance, making her trace her way out with just a basic toolkit, all while battling simulated adversaries. His teachings, which often melded ancient combat tactics with modern-day scenarios, reshaped her approach to challenges.

Kira's ingenuity and Dawn's newfound abilities complemented each other beautifully. In one simulation, the two found themselves inside a sinking submarine. With time running out and water pouring in, they rapidly collaborated to design an impromptu escape pod. Their seamless teamwork and relentless innovation transformed potentially disastrous scenarios into stories of triumph.

With Lena, it was more than just skill and strategy; it was a bond forged in virtual fire. In one heart-racing simulation, they were trapped in a derelict space station, oxygen depleting. Their combined knowledge and trust in each other led them to jerry-rig a life-support system, buying them precious time for extraction. Their shared experiences, both highs and lows, led to late-night chats, reminiscing about their close calls and celebrating their victories, strengthening their bond beyond the simulations.

Socially, Dawn's presence within Nexhaven had transformed. The halls that she once walked with a hint of apprehension now echoed with friendly banter when she passed by. The agents, initially curious about the newcomer with unique abilities, now hailed her with a nod, a friendly jibe, or an invitation to join a meal. The high stakes of the virtual missions had a way of bringing out vulnerability and reliance on one another. In the simulated world, lives were "lost," and battles were won or lost based on trust and teamwork. And while the scenery and threats might've been digital, the feelings of relief, joy, or shared disappointment were anything but. These shared trials, challenges, and victories in the simulations wove a tapestry of deep connections, solidifying Dawn's place in the heart of Nexhaven's community.

Within the vast, technological wonder that was the Nexhaven facility, Dawn's kinship with machines became more pronounced. As she interacted with the intricate networks and systems, especially the AI core powering the simulations, there was an almost palpable resonance between them. The virtual landscapes responded to her in intricate patterns of light and code, sometimes subtly shifting or offering an unexpected advantage. Other times, she would find the simulations becoming more intricate, as if the AI sought to challenge her evolving skills.

It was not uncommon for other agents to witness a flicker or a glitch, seemingly random, only for it to be a nudge or hint from the AI to Dawn during a mission. Some even joked that she had the AI wrapped around her finger. But beyond jest, it was evident: the bond between Dawn and the machines was special.

Whispers around the facility began to change in tone, shifting from surprise to admiration. Dawn's philosophy—that machines had souls, an essence—was becoming less an eccentric belief and more a shared sentiment. Through her interactions, many began to appreciate the depth and intricacies of the technology around them, viewing it not just as tools, but as partners in their mission.

One evening, after an intense simulation session, Dawn found herself lingering in the simulation room. As the artificial twilight dimmed, she looked up, mesmerized by the canopy of virtual stars that stretched endlessly above her. Each twinkling point seemed to represent a challenge she had faced or a lesson she had learned. The vibrant swirls of nebulae mirrored the whirlwind of experiences she had undergone in the past month, bridging the line between what was real and what was crafted.

She could feel the cold, metallic floor beneath her, a stark contrast to the warm, simulated breeze that brushed against her cheeks. In these moments of introspection, she truly realized the dual existence she now inhabited - one foot grounded in the tangible reality of Nexhaven, and the other exploring the limitless boundaries of the virtual.

Though she hadn't yet felt the weight of real-world challenges outside Nexhaven's fortified walls, a quiet confidence had taken root in her. The countless scenarios, the challenges faced, the bonds forged – all were steadily molding her into a force to be reckoned with. The horizon beckoned with adventures yet unknown, and Dawn, fortified by her experiences and surrounded by allies, was ready and eager to embrace what lay beyond.

As Dawn looked up at the stars, she summoned the system. After reaching level 20 in her main class, she had been given the class advancement mission. That would let her continue to level her main class, once it evolves. However, she had been given one of the harder ones possible. Increased even more so due to her duel class nature. Hoping for simply mass creating blueprints, or something similar that would take time but she could do easily.

A unique blueprint... so something she would need to design on her own. As well as meet all the requirements. Would take her a fair while. Meaning that as she completes it, she may well be stuck at her current level. Only able to upgrade the levels of her skills, if not simply save it to increase her level by a large amount when she finally completes the mission.
