Chapter 2 - Whispers of the Unseen

Aki's eyes opened as the gentle morning light seeped through his window blinds. He yawned and stretched, his lanky frame unfolding as he sat in bed.

His room felt like a haven, a place filled with his unique touch.

A colourful collection of anime posters and fictional characters adorned the walls, sparking his imagination.

Rubbing his eyes, Aki, a 178cm tall teenage boy with a lean physique, glanced at the ticking clock on his wall.

Another day began in his personalized twenty-first-century world of gadgets, virtual interactions, and limitless possibilities.

The echoes of last night's events reverberated through his thoughts, each reverberation carrying a surge of excitement and uncertainty.

The sudden "boom" had shaken the very core of his boredom, thrusting him into a reality far more exciting and uncertain than he could have imagined.

His thoughts drifted to his friend, Kod.

"Did Kod go through the same disruptive event? The question hung in the air, awaiting an answer.

With a determined look on his face, Aki grabbed his smartphone and texted Kod.

"Hey, did you hear that explosion last night?" he typed.

A few moments later, a reply came,

"Yeah, it sounded like a blast, didn't it?"

Aki's fingers danced across the screen as he typed,

"Nah, it was a blast. It was different. Let's meet up before school and discuss it."

The morning sun had risen by the time Aki finished getting ready.

He entered the cosy kitchen, greeted by the inviting aroma of pancakes and brewed coffee.

His mother, Eleanor, stood by the stove, flipping pancakes with practised ease. She turned with a warm smile as Aki entered.

"Morning, sleepyhead. Ready for breakfast?"

Eleanor asked, her eyes twinkling with affection.

Aki grinned, taking a seat at the table.

"Morning, Mom. You know I'm always up for your amazing pancakes."

Eleanor's laughter danced through the air, a melody of warmth and affection.

'You know how it is, dear. Responsibilities never take a day off.

Aki enjoyed his breakfast, but curiosity tugged at him. He gazed up at his mom, his red eyes meeting hers.

"Hey, Mom, where's Amara and Leo?"

Aki inquired, referring to his older sister and brother.

Eleanor paused, a fond smile touching her lips.

"Amara left early for her internship interviews. And your big brother Leo is already at work."

Aki nodded, impressed by his family's early morning routines.

" they're on top of things, huh?"

Eleanor chuckled.

"They've got their responsibilities."

He hesitated for a moment, his curiosity itching at the back of his mind.

"Mom, did you hear that explosion last night?" Aki asked, his voice tinged with intrigue.

Eleanor's expression shifted, a mixture of concern and uncertainty crossing her features. She paused for a moment before replying.

"Yes, Aki, I did. Your dad went out to find out more about it," she answered, her tone gentle but cautious.

Aki's eyes lit up, his curiosity piqued even further. " Do you know what caused it?Eleanor sighed, leaning against the kitchen counter.

"Not yet, sweetheart. It's still a mystery. But, Aki, you're young, and there are things you don't need to worry about. Focus on your studies and school for now."

Aki slouched, and his disappointment is evident.

"But Mom, I want to know what happened. It's so intriguing," Aki expressed his curiosity.

Eleanor walked over, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder, her voice soothing,

"I understand your curiosity, Aki, but sometimes, certain things are better handled by grown-ups. Your dad is on top of it, and if there's anything important for you to know, we'll share. For now, though, let's focus on your school."

Aki let out a resigned sigh, his shoulders slumping. "Yeah, I know."

Eleanor gave him a sympathetic smile, her eyes filled with understanding.

"I get it, sweetheart. Sometimes, we all have to be patient and trust that things will work out."

Aki nodded, taking in his mother's words. "Yeah, you're right, Mom. Thanks."

Eleanor ruffled his hair. "Now, finish up your breakfast."

Aki experienced disappointment and determination as he resumed eating.

After finishing his last bite of pancake and wiping his mouth with a napkin, Aki's attention shifted.

He noticed a friendly wagging tail and a pair of eager eyes. Trotting up to him with a joyful demeanour was his loyal companion, Max, a golden retriever.

Aki crouched down, his hand extending to ruffle Max's ears.

"Hey there, Max. Be a good boy while I'm at school, okay?" Aki said, his voice affectionate and warm.

Max responded with a series of happy barks and a wagging tail that seemed to convey his agreement. Aki laughed, giving Max's head a final pat.

"Good boy. I'll see you later," Aki said a fond smile on his face.

He straightened up and headed toward the door, his mom's voice called out from the kitchen,

"Don't forget your backpack, Aki."

Aki turned and grabbed his backpack, slinging it over his shoulder. "Thanks, Mom!"

He hopped on his bike and pedalled his way to Kod's house.

They frequently rode to school together, their shared curiosity and joy of the unusual igniting their friendship.

Aki reached Kod's house, he found his friend waiting by the gate.
