Chapter 1 - No time for such nonsense

I brush my silky black hair into a tightly secured bun as I stare at myself in my golden light-up mirror. The pale reflection of my face looks stunning despite my fatigue from only a few hours of sleep. I powder my face as I prepare for another day in the hospital. I look over the clock to my side and see it is already 6:45 am. I give my hair one last smooth over as I rush through the kitchen skipping breakfast again to catch the train to my hospital.

As I speed walk outside I take no time to idle in my surroundings. I have no time for such frivolous things as I charged forward, preparing to start another of surgery. I didn't get to where I am today by focusing on things that do not matter. I worked night and day for years to not only become a doctor, but one of the most respected surgeons in the world for discovering the ability to regrow damaged brain tissue.

As I barely catch the train I pull out my phone and catch up on the latest news from the scientific community. I never gave up my love of learning as I pull out a little sweet oatmeal bar to keep me satisfied until my lunch break in a couple of hours. I sigh remembering I forgot to pack a lunch yet again. I really should hire someone for that, but I don't want anybody else to know I still forget so many basic things to this day.

When I finally arrive at my hospital, I set out and quickly walk towards my office. I clock in to start my shift and look at the clock, 7:29. Perfect, not late, not on time, just barely early. I set my things down and pick up my schedule for today as I head into the operating room to prep for surgery.

I walked exhausted towards my desk for a chance to finally sit down after my twelve hours. I collapse onto my desk and punch the button to clock out; 8:03 pm. Late to leave again as I force myself to stand up and walk with severe heaviness in my body to my home. I barely kept my eyes open as I practically crawled in and out of the train. As I walked towards the door of my beautiful house, much too big for one person, I reached for my key and opened it only to see the lights on and my mother scowling on the couch as she looked towards me.

"Kira! We need to talk," She said with a huff. My father quickly appeared from behind the corner with the same inpatient expression. My weariness seemed to fade as I re-focused on my energy on hiding my frustration to see them uninvited at this hour.

"Mama, what is so urgent you need me at this time? I just finished surgery and need to return tomorrow morning!" I said louder than I intended. I quickly changed my expression when I saw the anger start to appear in theirs. Despite their high expectations, I always respected them and tried to be a good daughter.

"You need to get married, this year, or you are no daughter of ours!" My mother exclaimed at me. I felt like my eyes were about to burst out of my head.
