Chapter 4 - Light tolerance

"Hello, Dr. Kaito," I replied to him quietly. He smiled at me as he took his seat in front of me. A young waitress came by, dressed in a traditional white and black uniform. She handed out our menus and filled our cups with water and two cups of dark red wine.

"Oh, I didn't order any-" I started to say when I was interrupted.

"It's okay, I ordered some for both of us," Kaito stated as he rested his head on his hand, seeing my reaction to his behavior. I smiled at the waitress and sent her away to not smear my public image. Women in medicine are prone to any small scandal, if one gets out who knows what else will. Once she was gone and I snapped my head at him.

"So, what is your deal? Why do you want me here with you? And don't order my drink," I said quickly to him, not holding back the frustration in my voice. If I can get him to leave me be, perhaps all of this headache would go away. He only smiled more at him provoking my frustration further.

"Why not you?" He only replied. His mysterious tone made me feel a sense of unease. He continued, "I will not order you drinks anymore if you don't mind, are you not a fan of wine?" He asked me.

"It is not good for my image if I am seen drinking wine, regardless I am on my days off. People do not know that," I replied. I grabbed my water, swirled it around, and saw the bubbles, realizing it was sparkling water. I took a sip and tasted the hint of sweet hibiscus and lemon. Kaito drank a sip of his wine.

"Hmm, I can understand, but haven't you noticed this section of the lounge is only for us?" He asked me. I looked around more and the other tables were conveniently on the other side, hiding by the center wall. The outline of the restaurant was circular with a large center kitchen and bar. Our section seemed to be completely private and overlooked the city. When you looked out of the windows, you can see the ocean water, glimmering ever so slightly in the moonlight.

"I suppose you are right, but it is a good practice to only drink at home. Especially around strangers," I replied to him.

"So you have a light tolerance?" He instituted at me. My cheeks turned slightly red as I looked away from him with a frown while he continued smiling at me, peering deeply into my soul it felt like.

"I just don't want to, that is all," I said, unable to hold back the frustration in my voice. I tucked my ear behind my ear as he continued to look amused. We were interrupted by the waitress bringing us some Osso Buco to eat. It smelled delicious as we began to eat in silence for awhile. The flavor was impeccable with savory flavors lifted by the subtle seasonings. I nearly finished my plate but left one bite as it was ladylike.

"Why did you not finish your meal?" He asked me.

"It is not ladylike," I responded. He seemed unsatisfied with this answer but decided to let it go. "So, if we are to be married, when shall we start preparations?" I asked him boldly. There was no way out for the moment, so I will have to play along with this mysterious man. I saw a sly smile appear on his face with a face of intrigue.

"My, my, aren't you eager?" He spoke with a hint of sarcasm on his face. I put on my best fake smile due to the heavy weight of unease in the air.
