Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: A Father's Past

The morning sun bathed Alex's room in a warm glow as he woke up with groggy eyes. The fight yesterday had exhausted him. But the sleep that followed was the sweetest he had in recent times.

He got out of bed as his eyes swept over the table where he had put the wooden box left by his father. The book had been a blessing but he still had many questions about the supernatural world that he had stepped into. He had no clue how it worked.

He knew he had to uncover the mysteries of the supernatural world and the impending force his father had warned about. Freshening up, he pondered over his next steps while brushing his teeth, hoping to find a way to contact supernatural beings for answers.

As he dried his face, regret gnawed at him for killing the vampire yesterday. Perhaps that creature could have provided valuable insights into the supernatural world. "I should have thought twice before attacking," Alex murmured to himself, chastising his ignorance.

A spark of realization crossed his mind—he had a possible link to the supernatural world through his father. The excitement surged through him, and he quickly got ready to talk to his mother, Maria, about his father's friends. His father was a vampire. So his father's friends could have been linked to vampires or even been vampires themselves. It was possible.

In the kitchen, the aroma of breakfast filled the air as Maria hummed a soft tune while cooking. Alex approached her, a mix of hope and eagerness in his eyes. "Mom, do you remember any of Dad's friends?" he asked, trying to keep his voice casual.

Maria turned to him with a thoughtful expression, setting a plate of pancakes on the table. "I'm not sure, Alex. Your father didn't talk much about his friends," she replied, stirring a pot on the stove.

But Alex persisted, not ready to give up. "Think hard, Mom. There must be someone he used to hang out with," he urged gently.

Maria paused for a moment, her eyes narrowing in concentration. "Wait, now that I think about it, there was someone," she said, a glimmer of memory surfacing. "A man named Samuel, I believe. Your father used to be with him quite often."

Alex's heart skipped a beat. "Samuel? Do you know anything else about him?" he inquired, leaning in closer.

Maria shook her head. "Not much, Alex. He was always quite reserved and hardly spoke much. He seemed to be into mysterious things, just like your father," she recalled, her voice tinged with nostalgia.

"Did he live nearby?" Alex prodded, hoping for more information.

Maria's brows furrowed as she tried to recollect further. "No, I remember now. He lived in a small town outside of New Haven City. Silverbrook, I think it was called," she said, finally recalling the name.

Silverbrook—a name that resonated in Alex's mind. "Thank you, Mom," he said with gratitude, quickly finishing his breakfast.

"Whatever you are doing, please be careful, son. " Maria said to her son who nodded as he gobbled up the breakfast. Maria sighed and shook her head. He was just like his father was. Stubborn.

Alex quickly finished breakfast and went back to his room, his mind still replaying the conversation he had with his mother. He had to visit the town and he had to do it alone. But he had to find a good excuse to do it.
