Chapter 111 - "YOU CAN DO THIS!!"

"Looks like Kurai won't be returning to the game,"

"A tough break for OPU, but let's see how they handle this next challenge."

Haruki turned back to her team, eyes sharp.

"We're not done yet. We fight for every point, no matter what… Everyone steps up… We knew this was going to be tough—now it's time to show them what we're made of." With the final whistle signaling the end of the timeout, OPU stepped back onto the court, the weight of the situation pressing down on them, but with a burning determination in their eyes.

Kurai sat on the bench, his knee propped up and wrapped in ice, the throb of pain still echoing through his body. As he watched the game unfold, the roar of the crowd surged like a wave, echoing in his ears. A tidal wave of appreciation and support that both warmed and weighed heavy on his heart.

He glanced over at his teammates on the court, sweat glistening on their brows as they battled against Everest State University. Jaden was at the forefront, his determination palpable as he spiked the ball with fierce precision. Kurai felt a swell of pride, mingled with a sharp pang of regret.

"Look at them go," he murmured, more to himself than anyone nearby. Haruki, sitting beside him, nudged him gently.

"They're doing it for you, Kurai. They've got your back." Kurai nodded, swallowing hard.

"I wish I could be out there with them."

"Hey, you've done enough. You led them to this point… helped bring them to Nationals… Now it's their turn to carry the weight." Haruki's voice was steady, reassuring.

The crowd erupted again, their cheers cascading around the gym like a warm embrace. Kurai looked up, his heart racing as he saw the banners with "Outer Pentecostal University" hanging from the rafters, waving in the excitement. They weren't just fans; they were family, united in this moment.

As the applause continued, he felt a lump form in his throat. It was bittersweet, a reminder of his dreams and the sacrifices he had made to reach this stage. Despite the pain and frustration of being sidelined, he knew he was a part of something bigger.

The arena was filled with energy, but in this moment of quiet reflection, all he could hear was the echo of his own heartbeat. Kurai took a deep breath, feeling gratitude wash over him. He might be on the bench now, but his spirit was still in the game, cheering for his teammates just as loudly as the crowd.

"Okay…" He straightened his back, determination flickering in his eyes.

"YOU CAN DO THIS!!" Jaden jumped a bit, turning to Kurai who nodded and smirked. Jaden lifting a thumbs up.

------

The atmosphere in the arena crackled with energy, a mix of tension and excitement as the scoreboard loomed large: OPU 22-24 ESU: Match point. Every fan in the packed gymnasium was on edge, the crowd's collective breath held in anticipation of the final set. It felt like the air itself vibrated with the hopes and dreams of everyone watching, especially those clad in OPU's colors.

Jaden stood at the service line, sweat dripping down his brow. The weight of his team's hopes rested heavily on his shoulders. He looked over at the bench, where Kurai sat, his knee propped up and wrapped in ice, the pain of his absence almost tangible. The thought of his teammate, their captain, motivated Jaden, fueling his resolve.

"Focus, Jaden!" Haruki's voice cut through the noise of the crowd, her eyes sharp with determination. She had a plan, and he needed to execute it perfectly. Jaden nodded, inhaling deeply, the familiar rhythm grounding him as he tossed the ball high into the air.

He launched it over the net with all his might, the ball soaring and arcing sharply. Daisuke, quick on his feet, dove to receive it, eliciting a roar from their supporters.

"Go, go!" Haruki shouted, and Carlos and Jazz rallied at the net, ready to block. Kaito, eyes locked on the ball, set it high for their star spiker. The anticipation in the arena reached a fever pitch as the spiker leaped, powering the ball toward OPU's side with brutal force.

"Block it!" Jaden shouted, leaping alongside Jazz, who sprang with all his strength. Their hands met the ball, but it ricocheted off their fingertips, sending it spiraling out of bounds. The whistle blaring. The scoreboard shifted ominously: OPU 22-25 ESU. [25-18 (ESU)/ 22-25 (ESU)/ 2-0/ ESU wins]

Despair flickered across their faces. Jaden was breathing heavily, his eyes shaded. Owen, Jazz, and Liam sat and stood silently. Carlos takes quick breaths. Kurai sits on the bench, his hair covering his eyes in shade. Haruki quickly called a timeout, her voice steady.

One by one, the OPU players began to gather, their expressions a mix of anger, sorrow, and frustration. They came together in a huddle, embracing one another as the reality of their loss sank in. Jaden looked around, his eyes meeting those of his teammates, and he felt the heaviness of their collective disappointment.

"We gave it our all," Jazz said, his voice trembling slightly.

"Where's Kurai?" Haruki exhales.

"The medics drove him to the hospital to get his knee checked… he should be fine, but we'll have to see" Carlos looked around and sighed.

"We fought for him…" Carlos wipes sweat and tears from his brow. Jaden nods

"He'd want us to keep our heads up… We made it to Nationals." Haruki stepped forward, her voice steady and calm.

"That's right. This isn't the end. We've come too far to let this define us. We regroup, we learn, and we come back stronger."

As the ESU players celebrated around them, Jaden raised his head and took a deep breath.

"We'll get them next time," he declared, his voice gaining strength.

"For Kurai. For OPU." The huddle broke, and as they walked off the court together, the cheers of the opposing fans faded behind them, replaced by the supportive chants of OPU's loyal supporters, who filled the stands with their unwavering love. They weren't just a team; they were family, and they would rise from this defeat.
