The next day, Ivan was reading in the library when Dumbledore found him directly. He began with, "Dr. Ivan, can you truly assist Lupin in resolving his werewolf transformation problem?"
Ivan gazed at Dumbledore in front of him and felt a little surprised. To be honest, he had long suspected that Dumbledore would approach him, but he didn't anticipate it happening so soon. Could it be that he truly cared so much about Lupin?
However, Ivan was unaware that he had overlooked one crucial detail. Lupin was inconsequential; the key was his status as a werewolf. Despite werewolves in the Harry Potter stories facing rejection from others, even as a student in a magical school, Lupin's life remained challenging. In reality, in the hidden side of Britain, vampires, werewolves, and wizards represented the three major dark forces. If Ivan found a solution to the werewolf issue, he could potentially gain the support of other werewolves. This could become a significant political asset, allowing him to confront the recently emerged Voldemort's forces.
Ivan responded, "I cannot provide a definitive answer to your question. I haven't tested it myself, and no one can guarantee it. All I can promise is to give it my best effort, but at the very least, it won't worsen the situation any further."
Dumbledore appeared somewhat dissatisfied with Ivan's response. "Dr. Ivan's answer seems rather irresolute. Under these circumstances, I can't permit Lupin to collaborate with you on this experiment. If something goes awry, how could I justify it to others?"
Ivan smiled and replied, "No worries. If you're not interested, that's fine. After all, there are many werewolves out there, and I'll have future opportunities to find a willing werewolf to participate. In the meantime, I can continue my studies quietly. At this rate, I'll stay for another three months. I'll take my leave then and not disrupt your affairs."
Dumbledore hesitated and struggled to find the right words. He thought to himself, 'Why isn't this person following the expected script? He declined so easily, which leaves me unsure about what to ask next.'
In reality, Dumbledore had already agreed in his heart. His initial show of resistance was merely a tactical move to secure some guarantees from Ivan, gain a psychological edge, and secure certain benefits. Unfortunately, Ivan didn't seem to play along.
"Well, for Lupin's sake, let's proceed. Can you tell me, though, how confident you are in your plan? What specific ideas do you have? It would be helpful to have a clear understanding."
Ivan replied, "I can't provide a definite assurance. There are essentially two approaches to consider. The first involves the physical aspect. To be honest, I am quite intrigued by the transformation of a human into a werewolf. It's essentially a transformation that defies the boundaries of species. This mutation involves human genes merging with wolf genes without immediate rejection, which is a remarkable phenomenon.
The spread of lycanthropy occurs through biting and venom transmission. This venom is highly infectious and even corrupting. Yet, the constitution of beasts is undeniably more robust than that of humans. The intense physical pain coupled with the wolf's instincts is quite normal, especially during a full moon night when wolves are known to howl at the moon. The night of the full moon forms the most profound memory for the wolf. This leads to the uncontrollable nature of the werewolf.
In light of this, I plan to enhance Lupin's physical condition. I aim to facilitate his evolution and grant him a beast-like constitution. This way, the werewolf won't suffer as much pain during transformation, and he might even retain some degree of sanity."
Dumbledore was somewhat overwhelmed by the complexity of Ivan's explanation. While he understood magic and potions well, the scientific terminology and concepts left him perplexed.
"Hold on, hold on! Please simplify your explanation. I can't quite follow your scientific jargon."
"Apologies, I got carried away with my explanation. Let me put it in simpler terms. The alternative approach is to strengthen Lupin's mental control over his werewolf transformation. Since he possesses an animalistic nature, he can't merely suppress the transformation. Instead, he must learn to adapt willingly. Once he gets used to it, he should be able to transform and revert at will. The rest will be straightforward."
Dumbledore now understood the concept. After all, he was the most powerful wizard in the magical world and quickly grasped the feasibility of Ivan's idea. Though there were still challenges ahead, he believed they could work through them. In their discussion, Ivan even proposed solutions to some of the issues they might encounter.
The two conversed for an hour and ultimately left the meeting content. Ivan gained valuable research material, with Dumbledore's authorization to conduct his experiments without hindrance. For Dumbledore, the successful implementation of this method would resolve a significant issue for werewolves, making it a substantial boon for the magical world.
Though Ivan hadn't given a definitive guarantee, the outcome was favorable. As Dumbledore prepared to leave, he had one more question. He turned around and inquired, "Dr. Ivan, I heard that you visited Borgin and Burkes, the shop for dark magic items, yesterday. May I inquire about your intentions?"
Ivan seemed nonchalant, replying, "What else would I do in that shop? I went shopping. I acquired a soul-sealed skeleton, intending to study the mysteries of the soul."
Dumbledore listened to Ivan's straightforward response and felt relieved. Despite his concerns, he felt compelled to issue a warning. "While I know Dr. Ivan possesses great power, I must advise caution when dealing with dark magic items. Borgin and Burkes' items are often cursed, and if mishandled, you could easily become entangled in their dark influences. It's best to keep your distance from such items."
Ivan reassured him, "You needn't worry. I was aware of the curse when I obtained it. I've already dealt with it. I gained valuable insights from the course. The distorted field created by the curse, stemming from the potent resentment within the sealed soul, emitted a unique radiation that could inflict physical harm. I managed to neutralize it, and it sparked a fascinating idea. If a magic item could harness this beneficial magnetic field, it might regulate human bodily functions, potentially eliminating diseases and promoting long-lasting health!"
Dumbledore's face contorted as Ivan excitedly delved into scientific explanations and terminology, topics that left him feeling utterly lost. "Stop, please stop! I can't comprehend all of this. Can you explain it in simpler, more understandable terms?"
"Apologies, I got carried away with the details. Let me put it in simpler terms. The idea is quite promising, focusing on the beneficial aspects of the field created by the curse. By retaining this positive field on a magic item, we might regulate human body functions, possibly preventing diseases and extending life."
Dumbledore finally understood. He made a quick exit, determined to minimize his interactions with Ivan and, when unavoidable, to steer clear of any discussions related to science, a field that left him bewildered.
Ivan spent the entire day in the library, engrossed in his books. In the afternoon, Lupin's hurried footsteps interrupted his studies. Lupin had rushed over after school, eager to take control of his werewolf transformation.
Lupin's determination to control his werewolf transformation surpassed everyone's expectations. With Dumbledore's approval, he almost disregarded his studies. Now, he had finally arrived after the school day ended.
"Doctor, I..." Lupin's words were initially incoherent due to his breathlessness, but Ivan stopped him and said, "Don't worry, I understand what you want to say. Dumbledore has approached me and consented to our collaboration. We can begin working together. First, I'll need to collect some tissue cells from you for testing."
Lupin took a deep breath, calmed himself, and replied respectfully, "Dr. Ivan, please proceed."
Observing how quickly Lupin regained his composure, Ivan was pleased. It made sense; as a werewolf, Lupin faced immense pressure at the magical school. His emotions were understandably intense.
Ivan took out syringes, and test tubes, and began extracting blood, skin, hair, bone marrow, and other tissue cells from Lupin. He then introduced a method to train Lupin's spirit, a variation of the approach used to transform Captain America. By visualizing a wolf in his mind, Lupin could tap into his strong spiritual power, which was inherent in wizards due to their ability to perform magic. This power allowed him to form a connection with the wolf's will, thoughts, and instincts, helping him control the werewolf transformation.
At first, Lupin had been puzzled by Ivan's request to observe the habits and shapes of the old werewolf pack, but Ivan explained that it was a step toward overcoming the werewolf within him and regaining control of his faculties.
For some time, Ivan spent three hours each day studying werewolf genetics, which slowed his reading progress. However, this research provided him with valuable insights. In Lupin's tissue cells, he discovered the presence of the wolf gene, although it did not dominate. This explained why werewolves typically maintained a human form, only transforming when agitated or in danger, albeit at great energy cost. Ivan's primary goal was to enhance Lupin's physique, allowing him to bear the full werewolf form more effectively. Strengthening Lupin's physical condition presented no major challenges; Ivan had previously researched the superhuman serum, granting him a deep understanding of human physiology.
Lupin's tissue cells and a specialized potion, crafted with a combination of Lupin's blood and saliva from his werewolf transformations, would aid in the process.
