Andrew Lee froze for a moment, as he stared into her clear eyes, and a sentence suddenly burst out of him: "Of course I can! If needed, I could take care of you and Tommy for my whole life!"
Andrew's words made Emma Smith pause, stopping the dishes she was washing in her hands. His words seemed like a remote control for the television, instantly bringing everything to a halt with a single press.
Emma was moved by Andrew's kindness, but she knew that she and her son, Thomas, were both burdens to anyone. She couldn't selfishly create unnecessary trouble for Andrew because of her own needs.
In her eyes, Andrew was the kindest person there could possibly be, and people like him shouldn't have to bear this kind of fate.
"Huh? What did you just say?"
Emma resumed washing the dishes, deliberately placing the plate under the tap, seemingly trying to create a louder noise to cover up the fact that she had heard his words but didn't know how to respond to them.
