Leaving those words hanging in the air, she turned her head away from Jack, refusing to cast another glance in his direction.
Jack stood by the bedside, his deep eyes lingering on her for a moment. Then, without a word, he turned and walked out of the ward.
In situations spiraling out of his control, there was little he could do except attempt to make amends.
No matter how much Aunt Rong coaxed and cajoled, she couldn't coax a single word out of Georgia.
"Dear, please eat a little. It's not good for your body if you don't," Aunt Rong earnestly advised.
Georgia, still lost in thought, stared vacantly at the ceiling, her mind replaying the fragments of her time with Jack during this period. So many times, she had believed his sincerity, only to discover that she was merely a prop for his kidney donation.
"Young madam, please listen to my advice. You need to eat something. Resting is the best thing you can do for your body!" Aunt Rong's voice, near her ear, finally brought her back to reality. Her eyelashes quivered, and she began to respond.
Aunt Rong was right. If she didn't recover soon, how could she escape from this dreadful man?
With determination in her eyes, Georgia held back her tears and whispered, "I'll eat."
Aunt Rong nodded and swiftly picked up the bowl of porridge, spooning it carefully, one spoonful at a time, into Georgia's mouth.
Halfway through the meal, Georgia frowned, about to decline, when the door suddenly swung open.
"Georgia..."
A familiar, middle-aged female voice accompanied the hurried entrance of Ms. Liu. She saw Georgia lying on the bed and her eyes welled up with tears.
Georgia's heart clenched as she recognized the person. Tears filled her eyes, and she choked out, "Mom..."
"What happened to you? How did this happen?" Ms. Liu's voice trembled with emotion, and her eyes brimmed with anguish.
Professor Ruan entered behind her, his expressionless jovial than usual. Seeing the scene, he looked concerned.
Georgia's emotions settled as she quickly inquired, "Mom, why are you here?"
"Your father and I received a call from Xiao Yu. We heard about your accident, so we rushed over," Ms. Liu replied.
Hearing Jack's name, Georgia's brows furrowed, and her demeanor turned cooler. He had informed her parents about the accident but hadn't disclosed the reasons behind it, had he?
Ms. Liu dabbed at her tears and asked with concern, "Georgia, what happened to you? Tell us what's going on."
Georgia sighed, biting her lip, and softly confessed, "I had an accident and fell down the stairs..."
Ms. Liu was both distressed and upset. "An accident? How could you be so careless?"
Professor Ruan, ever the composed figure, interjected, "Let's not dwell on that. We shouldn't agitate the child..."
Ms. Liu sniffled, wiped her eyes, and refrained from further comments. She scanned the room and noticed that apart from Aunt Rong, there was no one else present. She inquired, "Where is he? Why isn't he here?"
Georgia bit her lip, and with a faint tone, she replied, "He just came to visit me, but he had some urgent matters to attend to, so he left."
She chose not to disclose the truth to her parents, to spare them unnecessary worry. Besides, Professor Ruan had a heart condition, and revealing the truth could potentially trigger a severe episode. Keeping it a secret was a more prudent choice.
