Chapter 13 - Dr. Rizal

"Ugh..., wouldn't it be easier if I just recited what I remember?" Genevieve asked. "Shouldn't that be enough to be considered a magic user."

"Oh, dear Genevieve. You can't always use the easy way to use magic," said Zian. "Imagine when you want to cast magic for an emergency situation, but you don't know how to cast it because of the limited magic sentences you remember."

Genevieve shook her head with an annoyed expression, indicating that she was frustrated with the lesson, "I know that, but..., learning ancient languages is hard enough for me"

"Geez, is that the extent of your enthusiasm for learning magic?" Frowning, Zian gave a facial expression that wondered about Genevieve's enthusiasm.

"Then, teach me something new. Don't just memorise ancient languages all the time" Shrugging her shoulders, Genevieve gave a facial expression that expressed displeasure.

Genevieve was now completely fed up with learning ancient languages. Several weeks had passed and other lessons had achieved a lot, but the magic lessons were still stuck in ancient language training.

So Genevieve decided to make a little protest to her magic teacher. She hoped that this protest would make her teacher consider teaching Genevieve something else.

Zian pondered for a while thinking about magic lessons that didn't bore people, "Hmm, how about we do some meditation?"

"Meditation? Like sitting in one place all day?" Genevieve asked.

Meditation in her old world were movements to control emotions and improve one's attention. Genevieve is now asking to confirm whether meditation in her old world and her new world are the same.

"Yes, meditation is the act of channelling all the mana in our body to other veins and organs. Meditation is usually used by mages to recover their mana quickly, by focusing the mind and making the mind calm" Zian said.

Genevieve listened to Zian's explanation attentively. She was intrigued by the concept of meditation which was different from what she knew before.

"So, meditation can help us recharge our mana?" asked Genevieve.

"Yes, that's one of the benefits. Mana is the source of magic, without mana we can't do magic. Mana is inside our bodies, just like the blood that flows in the veins. However, mana can also run out if we use too much magic. Therefore, we need to learn how to manage and restore our mana so that we don't run out when we need it." Zian explained.

"How do we manage and restore our mana?" asked Genevieve again.

"There are several ways to do it. One of them is meditation. Meditation is a technique to calm the mind and feel the flow of mana in our body. With meditation, we can focus our mana to the part of the body we want, for example to the hands or feet, or to internal organs such as the heart or brain. That way, we can increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the magic we do." Zian replied.

"Why do we need to focus our mana on a specific body part?" asked Genevieve.

"There are several ways to do this.

"Because each part of the body has different functions and characteristics in using magic. For example, the hands are the most commonly used body part to perform magic, as they can form magic symbols easily. However, the hands are also the most vulnerable to enemy attacks, because if the hands are injured or paralysed, then we cannot perform magic anymore. Therefore, we need to strengthen the mana in the hands to make them more resistant to attacks and recover faster if injured." Zian said clearly.

"Then, what about the legs?" asked Genevieve.

"The feet are an important part of the body for mobility and balance. We can use our feet to run, jump, or kick enemies. We can also use our feet to stabilise ourselves while performing magic that requires high concentration. Therefore, we need to strengthen the mana in our legs to make them more agile and strong." Zian replied.

"Then, what about the internal organs?" asked Genevieve.

"Internal organs are parts of the body that are vital for life. The heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and brain are examples of internal organs that play a role in keeping our body functioning. If one of the internal organs is disrupted or damaged, it can be fatal to our health and safety. Therefore, we need to strengthen the mana in our internal organs to be healthier and younger." Zian replied.

"I understand now. So meditation is a way to train the mana in our entire body to be more optimal in using magic." Genevieve concluded.

"That's right. You are smart enough to understand the concept of meditation." praised Zian.

"Thank you for your praise. But I still don't know how to do meditation properly." said Genevieve.

"Don't worry, I'll teach you how right now. Let's follow my steps properly." Zian said with a smile.

Zian then guided Genevieve to do the meditation together. He gave her instructions such as:

[Sit comfortably in a quiet and clean place.]

[Close your eyes and breathe deeply.]

[Empty your mind of all distractions and problems.]

[Focus your attention into your body and feel the flow of which flows in each of your veins.]

[Start from the tips of your toes and move upwards slowly.]

[Each time you feel the flow of mana in a part of your body, imagine the colour that corresponds to your magic element.]

[For example, if you are a fire magic user, then imagine the colour red. If you are a water magic user, then imagine the colour blue. And so on.]

[Once you reach the tips of your fingers, repeat this process from top to bottom.]

[Do this for a few minutes until you feel like your body is full of mana and shimmering colours.]

Genevieve followed Zian's instructions diligently. She felt that something was different inside her body. She felt calmer, fresher, and stronger. She felt that the mana inside her body became more abundant and more stable. She felt ready to perform more powerful magic.

"I feel it, Zian. I feel the mana inside my body." Genevieve said happily.

"Well done, Genevieve. You did a good job with the meditation. Now open your eyes and see the results." said Zian proudly.

Genevieve opened her eyes and was surprised to see what was in front of her. She saw her body glowing with beautiful colours. She saw her hands and feet were green. She saw her heart was purple. She saw her brain was white.

Every part of Genevieve's body emitted a different colour, her body was literally worthy of being called a twinkle light at this point.

"Wow, this is amazing. I've never seen my body like this before." Genevieve said in awe.

"This is a sign that you have reached a high level of meditation. You can see the mana inside your body with the naked eye. It also means that you can use magic more easily and more powerfully." Zian said happily.

"Does this also mean that I can use any magic I want?" asked Genevieve curiously.

"It might. But it's not easy to do. You have to learn a lot about all the theories and practices of magic before you can master it." Zian said honestly.

"I want to learn about wind magic. Can you teach me the chant?" asked Genevieve enthusiastically.

"Of course I can. But only after you've learnt the ancient language. The easy way is not always the best way." Zian said wisely.

"Well..." said Genevieve disappointedly. She bowed her head with a hollow feeling, showing a deep sense of disappointment.

"Don't be so gloomy, come show me your hands" said Zian with a bright smile, trying to instil a sense of joy in the students so that they wouldn't feel disappointed.

"What for?" Genevieve asked, glancing at Zian with a suspicious look.

"Just give me your hand" said Zian with a smiling face.

"Okay" Genevieve extended her right hand.

Zian then held Genevieve's right hand, and looked at her bracelet.

Genevieve, seeing the bracelet, asked, "What is this, Mrs Zian?"

"It's a Mana meter," Zian said.

Mana meter is a tool that can measure how much mana is in a person's body. Mana meters are usually in the form of bracelets, rings, or necklaces that are worn on certain parts of the body. Mana meters can display numbers or colours that indicate the amount of mana remaining.

"Mana meter? I've never heard of one before." Genevieve said in surprise.

"Mana meter is a fairly new tool in the magical world. It was created by a magical scientist named Dr Rizal. He is an expert in the field of mana and magic." said Zian in awe.

"Dr Rizal? Is he famous?" asked Genevieve curiously.

"Yes, he is very famous. He is one of the most influential magical scientists in the world. He has made many discoveries and researches related to mana and magic. He is also known as a very kind and smiling person." said Zian respectfully.

"I want to meet her someday. Maybe he can teach me a lot about magic." Genevieve said excitedly.

"That's possible. But it's not easy to meet him. He is very busy with his work and projects. She rarely appears in public. Only certain people can get in touch with her." Zian said realistically.

"Oh, I see," said Genevieve.

Genevieve then looked at the small screen on the bracelet. She saw the number 75% and the light green colour that showed the amount of mana in her body.

"This number shows the percentage of mana left in my body, right?" asked Genevieve.

"That's right. This number can change depending on your use of magic. The more you use magic, the less mana you have in your body." said Zian.

"Then, this colour shows what rank of mana I have, right?" asked Genevieve again.

"Yes, this colour shows what rank of mana you have. The light green colour indicates that you have Mana at rank B. The other colours are red for F rank, blue for E rank, yellow for D rank, black for C rank, and so on." said Zian.

In this world Mana is categorised into several ranks, namely F; red, E; blue, D; yellow, C; black, B; light green, A; purple, S; orange, SS; brown, SSS; gold. To find out what rank someone has, they usually check it in a laboratory or places that provide checking services.

Therefore, having a tool that is easy to carry and can always show the Mana rank that is owned, is very helpful for mages who want to see how much their Mana rank has increased after training / asceticism.

"I understand now. This is very helpful for every mage." Genevieve said happily.

"Yes, I feel so too. Mana meter are very useful for mages like us." Zian said in agreement.

"By the way, how did you get this mana meter?" asked Genevieve while pointing to the bracelet she was wearing.

"I got it from a friend who works in Dr Rizal's lab. He gave it to me as a birthday present. He said this is one of the prototype mana meters made by Dr Rizal." said Zian with a smile.

"Wow, you are so lucky. Can I borrow it?" asked Genevieve enthusiastically.

"Of course you can. I'll lend this mana metre to you for a while. But remember, don't break it or lose it." said Zian in a soft voice while looking at the cheerful Genevieve.

"Thank you, Zian. I will take good care of it." Genevieve said while looking at the bracelet on her wrist.

"Yes, take good care of it," said Zian. "Now it's time to end our lesson for today."

"All right." said Genevieve in agreement.

"Tomorrow we will still do meditation." said Zian with a smile.

"Ok Mrs Zian. Thank you also for lending me this Mana Meter" said Genevieve happily.

"You're welcome" replied Zian.

Genevieve and Zian then stood up and shook hands to mark the end of their lesson. They both felt satisfied and happy with the results they had achieved today. They also felt closer and closer as student and teacher of magic.
