Chapter 30 - Chapter 29 - Wyvern's Attack

"Lightning wyverns? How strong are they?" Leon inquires, seeing three yellow dashes in the sky heading towards them.

The man, Benny, responds "they are Class A draconic monsters. We should distance ourselves from the horses quickly. We should have time to escape while they are busy eating them."

"How will we get to the manor in time then?" not wanting to deal with the consequences of her being late to the family gathering she complains.

"My lady- "

"There are people all around, letting monsters of that level have free rein would be irresponsible" before the man could give his concerns Leon cuts in, his decision made.

"What's the plan Leon?"

Seeing that his warnings had fallen on death ears he could only click his tongue.

"Can you make a flare to blind them?"

"I probably can"

"Good, you blind them, and I will bring one of them down with a spear throw. Then each of us will deal with one of them."

With the formation of their simple plan completed, the two ready themselves. Hela gathers her magic into a ball shape whilst Leon locks on the front running Wyvern and prepares his attack.

I feel restored and this spear is brimming with magic, it will surely pierce its skin.

With the two ready Hela launches the ball, sending it the hundreds of metres into the air in the distance. After several seconds of flight time it bursts, producing a great explosion of light.

The sudden illumination blinds the wyverns, causing them to swerve in the air. Now unable to dodge his attack Leon hurls the spear. As the end passes through his fingers he ignites his hand in a controlled explosion, giving it additional speed. The spear accelerates quickly towards its target. In the blink of an eye reaches the wyvern. With a slight glow to the tip, it buries into the monster's chest. The sudden impact makes it drop like a stone.

"Let's go" Leon shouts.

Racing forward he unsheathes his sword. 'I need to make sure its dead before the others regain their sight.'

The monster hitting the ground causes a surge of dust and dirt to rise. The large bulk starts to squirm as Leon arrives, writhing in pain. Sparks of electricity scatter from its body.

Leon deftly dodges them and closes the gap. With a heavy swing, his sword cuts through its neck. With a lack of resistance, Leon sighs inwardly. 'It cut through it easily, thank goodness.'

The two figures above were not happy with his actions.

From their mouths bellowed a great roar that shook the ground. Leon jumped on the body and pulled out the spear. The mouths of the wyverns above lit up, crackling with electricity. The built-up energy is released in a beam. Everything in its path is vaporised. Seeing the harrowing destruction, Leon quickly runs.

As the blast follows Leon, Hela interjects herself. A blazing ball of fire is sent towards one of the wyverns. The blast from it causes the wyvern to temporarily stop its attack. With one less beam, Leon is able to evade.

He refires the spear at the wyvern. With its lower speed and the wyvern prepared, the attack misses. The wyvern comes to ground, while its companion changes its target to Hela.

"Come then" brandishing his sword he prepares for the clash.

Buzz. Just as the wyvern had dropped to near ground level, its wings flashed with light. At a speed the eye couldn't track, it erupted in front of Leon. Opening its huge jaws around Leon, its yellow eyes stare in triumph.

Crunch.

The power of jaws bite through the bones and flesh of Leons left shoulder. His arm below the elbow falls to the ground.

"Ahhhh!" The pain overwhelms Leon. His left side still in its jaw throbbed. The monster, with much practice at the coming move, beat its wings. Dragging Leon into the air with it, it increased its height.

"Leon!" Hela screams out, seeing him lifted into the air. She goes to take after him but is instead blasted by the wyvern.

'I need to kill it before it gets too high' fighting through the pain he pushes himself. Mustering up his strength, he raises his right arm. He jabs the sword at its neck. It slides in easy, giving Leon the faintest hope.

Reeling back a bit, it opens it jaws. Knowing it had not reached enough height for the fall to kill him, it reached for him again. This time grabbing his right arm.

Leon couldn't feel the pain anymore. His last idea was to put as much heat into his fist to burn it. Seeing as the wyvern continued its climb, passing a hundred metre altitude, his vision began fading.

'Is this the end? This life of mine has been worthless. Miserable. Why can't I save those around me. Valecia I'm sorry. If only I was stronger then I could have saved, you and everyone else from those vampires. I could have protected your last remnant. What will happen to Hela, to Shirley, to my friends? If only I was stronger.'

As colour began to leave his face and his blood slowly dripped to the ground, he willed his body to stay alive. 'I can't die. I can't die. I can't. Die. Die. Dead.'

With nothing left his body goes slack. The life drained from him. A light flash in front of his eyes.

"Power is there, just reach out for it," as the last of his will dissipates, a voice calls out.

Leon subconsciously reaches out, his last wish for power seeming to be answered in his mind.

The wyvern, having seen the man's body go limp, was feeling elated. The injury on its neck reminded it of its close encounter. Having reached its desire height, it was about to drop Leon and soon slurp up the crushed meat. However, to its shock, the man awoke.

With the stump of his left arm, he reached out. Watching as it rapidly reconstructed starting from the bottom and reaching his finger. His green eyes, which normally held a calmness to them were glazed with madness.

'Icicle spear!' shouting in his mind, a white compaction of ice appeared in his hand. Shooting the spear at the wyvern, it screamed out in pain. Its left eye had been pierced. Fluid dripped out where it used to be. With it releasing his right hand, Leon quickly grabbed hold of its jaw with his left. Watching the right hand regrow, he pulled his legs up. Wrapping both around its thick neck he held himself. The wyvern, now in panic, couldn't reach him easily. Grabbing the hilt of the sword, he pulled it across the neck. With a gurgle the wyvern struggled to breathe. Its blood splattering all over Leon, dying him red. In only a few seconds the pair were dropping fast. The wyvern, losing all its strength could no longer beat its wings.

Leon not distracted by the fall, digs his hand into the chest of the wyvern through the large cut. After a few seconds of digging, he pulls out a large yellow orb. Holding it in his hand he watches as it sinks into his skin. With it now gone, his body impacts the ground. His bones, stronger than steel, break from the impact.

Yet even with the catostrophic damage, Leon body begins to repair itself. The broken bones realign, fusing together once more. The crushed organs reconstruct themselves. What would normally be an incredibly painful experience didn't disturb Leon. Unable to feel the pain, his eyes instead draw themselves to his woman. 'Hela.'

At the moment she was struggling badly. The two were locked in a battle of magic. Her flames and their lightning breath. Seeing the breath was pushing back her flame, he stood up. Moving slowly at first, while the bones finish healing in his leg, he builds his magic.

Buzz. With them fully healed, he releases his magic. Like a lightning bolt he arrives at the wyvern. It turns it head, shocked by the sudden intrusion. Before it can counterattack though, Leon flicks his sword. Slicing it cleanly in two.

With the monster dead, Leon's body drops to the floor. Feeling as if a great fog is held within his head, he rubs his temple.

"Leon your alive, I thought you died" Hela runs and pulls him into her arms sobbing. Leon doesn't speak as tries to push back the horrible feeling pulsing through him.
