Chapter 20 - Epilogue

RAARGH!

A roar which echoed from inside the cabin of Captain Ghulius Tiberius Gutgore, aboard the Hoarfrost's Halberd. A sound, none the likes of which, any crew member aboard had ever heard echo forth before, it sound like a great beast, crying out both in rage and in agony. An almost unnatural cry, and crew member near to the doors of the cabin, stopped what they were doing and slowly backed away. Their hearts filled with fear, for whoever might be in their with the enraged captain. The sole individual who was behind those doors, then was Dylan. His consort and conspirator, in so many a thing. It would seem strange most likely, to anyone who might dare a peek, the way she stood so perfectly still and quiet, as her captain stormed and raged about.

"GARDENING GLOVES!" The polar roared. "THE THEEVER SWITCHED THEM OUT FOR GARDENING GLOVES!"

"So it would seem."

"AND YOU DIDN"T NOTICE!?"

"Was that my task?" Dylan poured a bourbon-like drink for her master. "Here," she said. "Drink this. You always get tense, when you haven't had your daily drink."

"I'm tense..." the polar bear growled, as she snatched the drink, and gulped it down, "Because by Calypso, that blasted Colin pulled another of his tricks on me! He baited me with an illusion, and I gave him the tablet, free and clear! I should've followed my instincts! I should've taken a hostage to ensure I got the right gauntlets! Something!"

"Yes, you should've."

"What was that?"

"I simply said, it doesn't surprise me, that Colin tricked you. Or that he's tricked you any of those other times, actually. I mean, you're not very bright. Who did all the decrypting work, on that tablet, and led you to its value in the first place? Who inserted themselves in with Colin's party, and then used the portal at the right moment, to bring you and your crew in?"

"YOU...WHY YOU INSOLENT UN-UNGRATEFUL...gasp!" The polar bear grasped at his throat, suddenly finding it very hard to breathe, as he collapsed across the table. His arm outstretched, fingers twitching, as he tried to grab at Dylan, who simply smirked, and brushed his limp arm to the side.

"Pathetic," she said coldly. "You were so eager for your drink; you didn't even take the time to sip or savor it. Maybe if you had, you would've actually been alerted to the powdered Shadi's root, I laced it with. Yeah. Always with the Colin's out to get me, Colin's out to prove he's better than me...heh. You fool. Colin never had to do that. You always did it yourself, like I did right now. And now, because of that arrogance...I'm finally free of you." The ermine stated with a smirk. She having effectively poisoned the bear, then took the key ring from off his belt. And picking out a particular key, inserted it in the lock of a nearby chest where all of Gutgore's most precious valuables where kept hidden.

Dylan searched, until she came across one treasure in particular. A parchment, whose etchings she smiled at the sight of, as she unfurled it.

"Yes," she whispered, as she looked upon what appeared to be a map of an island in the shape of a serpent. "You all were stupid, to think that this is the end. Where there is light...there is darkness. And where order is found...chaos, will follow in its wake. Lots...and lots...of chaos."
