Chapter 4 - Surreal Nightmare

I gripped the handles of the grocery bags on my hands as I looked at the woman, directly into her pleading eyes. I was trained to know better if someone is lying or not, and she looks real to me. Perhaps, that's what my intuition tells me. "I don't want to be part of your misery, woman." I pulled my shirt off the woman's grasp.

"Please, help me. I can't afford to die, now." She pleaded, clasping both of her hands before her. While, two of the constables advanced to her back and grabbed her by the shoulders as the rest of the constables guarded around us.

Well, this is far from what I have expected. Seems like I might not escape as well, given that I was centred between the encircling soldiers, together with the woman who bumped into me.

More than that, my eyebrows arched in confusion to what the woman said. I wonder what she meant by getting killed or perhaps die, now. "What do you mean, you can't afford to die, now? It's not like they're going to bring you to slaughter, are they?"

I am well aware that the tension around us is getting more intense, let alone constables are already gesturing to aim their automated guns with bullets that can pierce through your body, within sight scope.

"You have to help me. I am innocent, I am the victim here and was merely set-up. They will kill me! They have no mercy for people like me! They would not rot me in prison like how they made you believe, they execute criminals — whether proven guilty or not — in the most brutal way possible." She exclaimed. Her tears were already falling down her cheeks.

"Shut it, young miss or suffer the consequences later on." One of the constables shouted.

I presume, he's the one leading the whole army. Given that, when he gestured his hands into a rash wave, the rest of the constables that have gathered around us, loaded their firearms with bullets as they wait for their leader's command to go for an open fire.

That's when I realised something was off about the situation. The soldiers that have come to arrest the woman were doubled in numbers and were armed. They do not usually carry firearms with them whenever they arrest a normal thieves or criminals. Unless, they're high valued ones.

"Please, I beg you! Help me!" She panicked as the two constables held her hands on her back, while she's trying her best to get away from their holds as her tears were falling down, unstoppably.

I didn't say anything. I am taking my time to observe the scene and wait for the turn possible turn of events, before I decide what to do. To my surprise, she bent her upper half body, didn't move for a moment, and afterwards she threw her back aggressively, hitting the constable — that was having her captive— by her head. When her head smacked on the face of the constable, I heard a cracking noise. I was certain. It was his nose cracking.

Anyone on the constable's position would have already screamed in pain. However, I heard no sound of a bit of pain coming from him. As the blood flows down his broken nose, his lips drew into a thin line, portraying that he's gone mad at her.

With a blink of an eye, he landed a blasting kick on the woman's back while he kept her hands tied oh her back by the use of his agitated hands. Which, made her screamed in pain as her back arched forward as his heavy kick caused her an excruciating pain.

My eyes went wide as I witnessed the scenario before me. How could a man hurt a woman? My heart sank with the painful scream of the woman. My body was flaming in anger. She might be a criminal or a thief, but they should've known better on how to deal with such situation. This is not the justice I believed the city's protectors are initiating.

"Bring her to the station and lock her in prison! Let her rot there in starvation with the lions in there!" Shouted the leader of the constables.

My eyes went even wider than it was as his words echoed in my ears, making my jaw dropped in disbelief. What on earth did he just say? I clenched my fists whilst trying my best to stay calm and collected as numbness surpasses my raising anger towards the disrespectful actions and words of the constables.

"Take her away!" Shouted the leader of the constables as the rest of them remained silent, waiting for his command, ready to fire anytime. They're determined to exterminate her right here, right now.

"No!" The woman screamed. When the constable who was holding her captive, pulled her by the hair as his other hand cuffed her wrist. The constables who were gathered around, made way, creating a pathway for them to pass. "Help." She silently muttered as they walked past me. Her eyes were still filled with tears, and it breaks my heart for some reason. I do not like seeing a woman crying, for Jean clearly told me that those who shed tears are weak and are in need of help.

Acting before I could think of the best way to do, I have dropped the grocery bags I was holding on the floor and turned back, trudged towards the woman and the constable who was holding her. Before they could go any further, I extended my right arm and grabbed the constable by the shoulder. Which, made everyone halted.

When the woman looked at me, I shot her with a defeated look. "This surreal is a nightmare. You better pay for this." I threatened her.

She didn't say a word but I could see how her eyes sparkled when I offered to help her. I have gone mad.

"What do you think you are doing, woman?" The leader of the constables strode towards me, wearing his pissed off expression on his face.

Well, there's no running away from this now. Too bad, they have already seen my face. Henceforth, I hadn't much of a choice but to rip a part from my black shirt and use it as mask to conceal my identity from the crowd of people that's forming around us. We've already got their attention. I can't afford to be seen, let alone caught.
