"We'll need some first-hand information in the future. I trust you are the fittest group for that task," the commandant told Rargnes' group.
"It'd be an honor, sir."
Three months had passed since the day they had been forcefully assimilated. The commandant must have thought they saw enough not to betray him - he was the winning camp. He was sure of it. And now, he had to trust them, or their assimilation would have been for nothing.
The commandant's guard dropped him a piece of paper on which stood his mission: Inform him of all the noble actions, the company's actions, and the strongest group's actions and all those whom they were strong enough to kill and numerous enough to be of worth.
Still, that man was all for energy. He had been drinking all night on the day of their assimilation, tearing out his hair and crying from the loss of energy.
Rargnes group passed the portals under the jaw-dropping expression of the people of the inn. Someone dropped the food from his spoon, dropping it on his plate.
Then, he rushed to their informator.
"I got the information," said the goblin administrator to RedStar, who promptly paid him a copious amount of gold.
"The nobleman is in search of superpowers. Not just any. Some have found objects, including manuscripts that spoke of providence. On these, it is said that there are three powers in your country."
"Which ones?"
"A power of balance and fairness, a power of life, and a power of possibility of victory. The nobleman wants them absolutely. He has already found the power of balance and fairness and absolutely wants to find the other two to fight with the other nobles. His attacks are just for that, targeting the largest groups."
"And has he succeeded?"
"He has failed, but he has severely damaged them. He wants to wait to see if he can succeed before requesting the major companies' help, but he won't hesitate to call on them if this lasts too long. I'm not sure how much of this is politics and how much is true, but be careful. He has his eye on your military group."
Rargnes hid his smile as RedStar told him the conversation.
'He needs to kill the noble before he can get rid of us...'
The win was already there. But the man was building more and more force and might kill him.
'Should I run away?'
As far as he knew, his role was now isolated. It would be hard to stick to some factions.
Time passed until that day. A commandant's guard passed through the portal alone.
"We need you for some action.
"What is it?"
"We're going to attack a fairly significant target. Come to the military base by tonight."
They took the portal and hurried to the army. They were informed that they would have to defeat another group of human soldiers there. They were not as strong, but they wanted to minimize risks.
Rargnes headed to the headquarters, where a dozen people stood—the team leaders and the commandant's guard—circling a table with a map. It showed numerous military bases, three bigger than the others, including their own.
"Rargnes! You're here!" said the commandant. "The goal is to kill the leader or capture him alive to allow the trackers to follow more easily. Understood? Only kill when absolutely necessary. We'll need real men to control the area the rest of the time."
After that was the noble. They had recruited like crazy in the past months, reaching 300 soldiers - all strong enough to give Rargnes a good fight.
The commandant pointed to the closest point, which was designated a military base. "This one, their chief, said he had superpowers. We just need to make the noble believe he really has one before taking him with us. Then the noble will come, without his company."
"They might really have superpowers?" asked a man. "Did we check that?"
"Don't worry, and just prepare. The noble will die this year!"
People returned from the commandant's camp, talking to each other and forming factions.
After the fight against the noble, there might been a bloodbath.
