My hand flew to my mouth to stifle a cry when I saw Regan. His hands were bound with long silver chains, preventing him from sitting down comfortably. He was kneeling, struggling against the chains, and his head hung low as if he could no longer bear its weight.
Tears streamed down my face as I took shaky steps towards him.
"Regan..." I whispered. As if hearing my voice, he raised his head slightly to see me, but with a painful growl, his head fell back to its previous position.
I didn't even realize when I dropped the basket and ran towards him. I knelt in front of him and wrapped my hands around him, letting the tears flow freely once again.
"Regan..." I cried.
His head rested against the side of my neck as I hugged him.
"Nora... I'm sorry... I couldn't protect you," his rough voice was barely above a whisper.
I cried even harder.
