"I'm a mage here; can't forget that."

Although he carried a sword as his main weapon, this did not change the fact that the class he had ultimately chosen was mage, not warrior. This meant he should have been wielding magic instead of a sword. Unfortunately, he couldn't do that. This wasn't a game where he could experiment with his life on the line.

However, this didn't mean he wouldn't utilise his mage class abilities. It would be foolish not to, especially considering he needed every advantage to complete his current quest and ensure his survival.

"Mana ball and mana missiles, and they are both level 0," Ethan thought, his expression contemplative. The spells were treated as skills within the game's rules in this world, which was something Ethan could at least understand.

"Although I still don't know what these levels signify, I can tell that these spells should be the most basic of basics. In other words, just beginner magic. But I believe that depending on how they are used, they could be useful," he considered.

These were the thoughts running through Ethan's mind as he stared at his status panel in a slight daze. Mia was behind him, so she couldn't see that he was looking at his status at the moment. Even if she were in a position to see Ethan's face, she might still not realise his actions, as she was occupied scanning her surroundings for any potential threats that looked like it could kill a human like her.

"I wonder how to cast them," Ethan suddenly muttered aloud.

"Eh, what did you say?" Mia called out instinctively. She had been on guard since they started their journey to the golden light ahead, so when she heard Ethan's voice, she replied without thinking.

"It's nothing," Ethan quickly responded, realising that he had let his thoughts slip out of his mouth.

"Okay," Mia replied softly before returning her focus to the surroundings as she and Ethan continued moving forward.

Ethan was still pondering how to cast his skills when a certain curiosity crossed his mind. Immediately, he turned to look at Mia behind him, slightly turning his face, and spoke.

"What skills did you get from choosing the warrior class, Mia?" Ethan asked.

There was no deep intention behind his question; he was just curious about the skills she possessed, their levels, and their strength based on their names.

Fortunately, Mia didn't seem hesitant to share the information and answered after a brief pause to process Ethan's words.

"Level 0 slash, level 0 charge, and level 1 berserk."

"....."

"What happened, Ethan?" Mia asked, concerned, when she saw Ethan suddenly halt in his tracks.

"....It's nothing," Ethan replied with a voice devoid of emotion, and he resumed his journey forward.

"Not two or three skills," Ethan thought, feeling the remnants of his heart turn to dust. "One is even a skill above level 1. Although I don't understand the significance of skill and item levels, I know it's better than level 0! Why does she have so much luck?" Ethan pondered. "Does she worship the goddess of luck? Should I change my religion, perhaps?"

When Ethan recalled that Mia couldn't even make good use of this skill, he could only grit his teeth and avoid dwelling on why he hadn't chosen a warrior class himself. "I should just focus on myself," Ethan decided after a few seconds, accompanied by a sigh.

"Now, how do I cast these spells?" Ethan questioned, preparing to experiment as he moved. "Will speaking the name of the skill work?" he wondered. He was also curious if simply thinking it in his mind would activate a spell. It couldn't be that he needed to physically learn how to cast a spell, could it?

After considering his options, Ethan resolved to put his thoughts into action. "I'll start with mana ball," he decided before taking a deep breath. After a few seconds, he whispered the spell's name aloud.

"{{Mana ball}}"

As Ethan uttered the word, the mental image he had was of releasing a spell. His assumption wasn't wrong, as the moment the name of the skill he aimed to cast left his lips, he felt something within him drain significantly. However, Ethan's focus didn't linger on this feeling but rather on the phenomenon unfolding in his free left palm.

A football-sized ball of blue light had formed on his left palm. It bore a resemblance to an attack wielded by a character from a certain century-old anime, hailing from the hidden village of the leaves.

"This is magic?" Ethan uttered in a daze, coming to a halt.

The sensation he experienced in his palm was entirely novel, a feeling he had never encountered before. It was undoubtedly magical.

"So, this is magic?" Ethan repeated, this time with a wild smile gracing his face.

Mia, who was behind him, also halted in her tracks, an expression of surprise and awe painted across her features.

Both players had delved into numerous VR games and had engaged with magic in various forms, yet this marked the first instance it had felt so tangible, so real.

It was their initial encounter with something akin to the supernatural.
