Chapter 40 - Chapter 39

It took Roan around twenty minutes to reach Suvam Inn and grab his things. He also asked for his remaining money on the way out of the inn. Fortunately, Isha, the girl at the counter gave him his money back which was just around fifteen silvers as he had already stayed there for four days.

Roan walked away from the inn with a cloth bag on his shoulder and a new sword in his hand, which he had bought yesterday while he had gone job hunting. It was cheap costing only two silver, unlike the sword he had bought at Cecilia's shop which had cost him twenty silvers.

Just the thought of that sword ached his heart. But that wasn't the only thing that he had lost. He had also lost his savings which were around four gold coins, a sizable sum. He really wished he could go back to Tolaga and get back his stuff from these thugs.

"I will one day. " Roan muttered.

After a bit of walking, Roan arrived at the outer wall. Zek seemed to have arrived and was sitting on the front of the cart while Alvis was talking with two new men at the back who Roan guessed were the escorts that Zek had brought.

Roan approached them and Zek immediately noticed him.

Zek smiled, his long beard only letting Roan see a glimpse of that smile. He then got down and approached Roan. "Good to see you're doing well, Roan. "

"Good to see you too. How's everything going?" "Roan replied. Zek's words brought back the memory of his friends but it wasn't accompanied by the gut-wrenching pain like it used to. It was the only benefit Roan could think of having his emotions suppressed. He wouldn't have to go through grief and pain every time he thought of his friends.

"I'm alright. I heard you're willing to be our escort. "

Roan nodded, "If you're willing to let me be. "He said with a faint smile.

Zek stroked his beard and said, "Well. We do need one more helping hand. The travellers bring back bad news after bad news... The monsters have increased even more... Some even lost their lives... So we have to be careful. " Zek sighed while shaking his head.

'Then why are you leaving the town? 'Was what Roan wanted to ask but he just kept his mouth shut. He himself was keen on leaving the town so he shouldn't be judging someone.

"Ok. Do you need some demonstration of my abilities or something? "Roan asked with a chuckle.

But Zek just waved him off, "No need. I know a fighter when I see one. " and looked him up and down. Roan looked vastly different from what he was like when they found him at Mervielle. At that time, he was miserable and broken but now his brown eyes were bright and his blonde hair looked lustrous. He had even put on some muscles and it hadn't even been a month since Zek had seen Roan. It was a big transformation but Zek knew the cause of it and it was also the reason why he didn't care about Roan's strength.

Zek knew that Roan was a magus and a Necromancer on top of that. As for the reason how. Because Zek himself was a magus. Albeit a reject with a low-inferior rank talent. The lowest a person could have and if it were any lower then he wouldn't have even awakened. And that was probably why that Roan hadn't realized that he was a magus. His talent was just so bad that the ether in his ether pool was the same as a normal person had in their body.

It was also the reason he had left his village. His family had sold everything to procure the money required for his awakening which was five gold coins. A massive sum for villagers but his talent came out as something that not a single organisation present in that awakening ceremony desired.

Of the thirty kids who were going through the awakening with him, only five awakened while the other twenty-five didn't even awaken. And from those five only two had high-inferior ranked talent while the other two had intermediate-inferior while he was the only one with low-inferior ranked talent.

And not getting chosen by any organization meant that if he wanted to learn any spell, he would have to buy it with his own money. But a single spell in the Arcane Association cost ten gold, a cost Zek wouldn't have been able to afford at that time.

So, now here he was, earning money to buy a spell so that he could earn even more money to repay his father who had thrown him out of his house after hearing about the result of his awakening.

It hadn't been hard for Zek to connect the dots after he realized that Roan was a magus. Roan had been sleeping soundly with not a single wound on his body after fighting the beasts. And he was a magus but didn't say a single word about it to them. All these suspicions added up and made Zek realize that Roan was probably a Necromancer.

But there wasn't a problem even if Roan wasn't a Necromancer as he still was a magus which meant that he was stronger than an average person. It was enough of a reason for Zek to hire Roan.

"So, we should discuss the money. " Roan's voice pulled Zek out of his thoughts.

"Well, I'm paying these guys fifteen silver. So you'll get the same. "Zek said.

Roan thought about it for a few seconds and then nodded. It was fair enough. Fifteen silver was more than half a gold. So it was decent money for a couple of days of work. And he wouldn't have to worry about food too as Zek would be responsible.

Zek smiled at Roan after seeing him nod and said, "Follow me then. We'll be leaving now. "

Zek then walked to the back of the cart where Alvis had already sat down with the other two guys."Everything good? "Zek asked.

Alvis nodded at Zek and turned to Roan, "Are you going? "He asked.

"Yes. I'll be in your care. "Roan smiled and climbed on the cart. He sat down beside Alvis.

And so the cart set off from Fayoor town as the sun climbed to the middle of the sky.

End of Volume one-The Awakening.

(Hello everyone. Hope you enjoyed this volume. I know it wasn't that good and could have been better but I think I did an okay job for a first-time writer. And I learned a lot while writing it. So the next volume will be better and fast-paced than this volume. And if you enjoyed reading this book up to this point, then please leave a review whether it be good or bad. Thank you for reading. )
