Chapter 25 - Chapter 24

Roan huffed and puffed as he climbed onto the roof of a house. It was a three-storied brick house with large windows which made it easier to climb. The chilly wind hit his face but he held on. His hands were shaking from exhaustion. But fortunately, his zombies were climbing below him, ready to support him if needed. Otherwise, Roan wouldn't have the courage to climb the wall.

This house was the tallest house that was close to the wall within touching distance. It would provide him with a jumpstart in climbing the wall.

But first, he had to distract the soldiers.

Roan lifted his head as he hung on the wall of the house, opposite the wall and hidden from the patrolling soldiers who were walking on top of the wall. There were at least ten soldiers within fifty metres of him. And the zombies had to distract more than five of them and pull them away from here. A daunting task but zombies were tenacious. So, they could pull it off.

Roan turned his head to his right where there were two zombies on the roof of another house around fifty metres away. They were the ones who were going to be distracting the soldiers. The plan was simple. The zombies were going to climb on the wall and wantonly fight. They were tenacious, so arrows wouldn't kill them which force the soldiers to engage in hand-to-hand combat. But a couple of soldiers wouldn't be enough to kill the two zombies. So, more soldiers would gather there, leaving the area Roan was trying to cross empty.

It was simple but if the soldiers were too strong and managed to kill the zombies before the other soldiers even had to chance to go there, then the plan was going to be a failure and Roan would be stuck here. He had sent the strongest and the biggest of his zombies so they wouldn't die quickly. But who knows what might happen? All he could do was give it his all and hope.

Roan shook his head and focused on the situation. The soldiers were alert. So there wasn't a chance of taking advantage of their carelessness. Not a single one. They walked in uniform steps with a stony face and eyes ahead. They looked disciplined. Unlike the soldiers guarding the outer wall who were lax at times.

Roan could feel his hand getting tired after hanging for a minute or two. It was now or never. He took a deep breath and mentally ordered the zombies to climb the wall.

The zombies got out of hiding and directly jumped on the wall. They barely caught on the edge of the wall and pulled themselves up. The soldiers were surprised but their instincts were in as they quickly fired their crossbows. The bolts embedded themselves on the chest of the zombies but it was futile. Dead can't die from such minor wounds.

The soldiers were surprised even more after seeing the zombies still standing with the crossbow bolts sticking out of their bodies.

"What? There's no blood. " One of them exclaimed after noticing the lack of bleeding from the zombies. But the zombies didn't give the soldiers time to get surprised and a fight broke out. The zombies used their superior strength and sharp claws to injure or even instantly kill the soldiers. The scuffle attracted the nearby soldiers who quickly approached to help their comrades. But the weak strikes of their flimsy swords made no substantial damage to the body of the zombies. They were too strong and durable for the soldiers.

'Why are the soldiers so weak? ' It seemed like the soldiers weren't as strong as they looked. Or his zombies were too strong. But ultimately, it didn't matter much.

Roan watched on as more soldiers joined in the fight. But the number of dead soldiers increased just as much. The soldiers were helpless.

Even the soldiers that were within a hundred metres of Roan had been attracted to the fight. There were at least thirty soldiers now. Some were firing crossbows while some fought with their swords. But it was all futile. Without decapitating, the zombies wouldn't die from just superficial wounds that would otherwise be fatal to men.

Roan wanted to keep on watching the fight. But as he watched on, he realized he was enjoying it too much. The blood and the cries for help as the soldiers were shredded made Roan want to just keep watching. But he shook his head and shook away the feeling. He shouldn't enjoy others' suffering.

Roan had to get out of here. He climbed onto the roof once he was sure that all the soldiers had gone to fight his zombies and approached the wall. It was high but with the help of his zombies, he would be able to climb it. He swiftly climbed onto the wall and used time deceleration. He watched as everything slowed down. The huge fight that was happening and a distant roar of a man. But he ignored all of it and looked at the other side of the wall. There was a house below but it was only two storied. The fall would hurt but he couldn't waste time. He jumped down without thinking and landed on the brick terrace. His knees hurt but he sucked it up and quickly climbed down.

He clapped away the dust from his hands and looked back at the top of the wall. There was no one. It was a success. The zombies had fought better than he had expected and made it way easier.

But the roar that he had heard before jumping worried him. Was that a knight or a magus, he didn't know. But it wasn't a roar that a normal person could produce.

But whatever it may be, he had to get out of this town. It was too risky to remain here as a Necromancer. He had a close call this time and if he had been discovered by anyone, then he would have been doomed. So, leaving this town was the better choice. The wild had its danger, especially after the pits awakening but it was better than living in this town worrying about being exposed.
