Chapter 16 - A Friend In Need Is A Friend Indeed

"How are we supposed to get there? It's across the state!"

Will is shocked by how far it is. Ever since they became a single parent family, they had less money to spend, due to only having one breadwinner for the family. He knew that his mother did not have that much money to spend on him, because for his last birthday all he got was a slice of cheap, chocolate cake. The only reason they still live decently is because their charitable neighbors donate stuff to them regularly.

But what worried Will the most is his mom's reaction. After the death of his father, Maggie always kept a tight leash on Will, never leaving out of her sight for more than three days (school camping the only exercise she allowed him to stay away far from home). Ever since then, his mother became paranoid that they would come and take Will too. This has lead to will being called a momma's boy at school far too many times, of which many ended in fistfights.

"I don't know how to go there in the first place, and even if we do, how are we supposed to get the money to go there in the first place. You know that I am not rich-rich. I mean, most of my clothes are from thrift stores, and the money that mom earns is used to pay for our food, tuition and taxes. There's no way that we will be able to reach there without hitchhiking, and that could take weeks if we do so, not to mention the fact that my mother keeps a sharp eye on me. After what happened with my dad, mom always makes sure that I'm at a distance where she can keep an eye on me."

"What happened to your father Will?" Amy asks in confusion. Will takes a deep look at the skies and mentions "I don't remember what happened exactly, but my mother never mentioned it to me whenever I asked for it."

Even though he said this, Amy knew that Will was lying. His eyes held great sadness in them, which seemed opposite of what he said.

"So," Amy steers the conversation back "Can't you, you know, ask for some chaperone and money from a good friend of yours? I mean, you must have one, right?"

"Of course!" Will slaps his head in remembrance, "How could I forget about Ricky Sanchez. He's a genius when it comes to things all technological and stuff."

"How does it connect with getting some money for our journey exactly?" Amy asked in wonder.

"Well, the thing is, he's so smart that he comes with new inventions nearly every single day, most of which are kinda lame, but some have been patented. These patents allow him to rake in lots of money, which means that he's loaded, not to mention the fact that we are best friends."

"How did you get acquainted exactly?" Amy questioned Will, as she did not believe that someone as smart as Ricky would be friends with someone like him.

"Well, it involved a piano, a drawer, and twenty school teachers getting mad at you for destroying the school cafeteria, that's all you need to know."
