Chapter 3 - Born hunter

Ari looked into the wolf's eyes and knocked another arrow as he slowly crouched down in a fighting position. As he analysed the beast he realised that the wolf was closer to a normal wolf than to a real beast wolf. The wolf was smaller than an average wolf and obviously still young. It was probably a regular venomous wolf. They are not common in these parts of the woods but not rare enough that there would be no information about them. Ari was glad that he had read all the books in the village chiefs house during the past four years. He now knew that this wolf was still young and inexperienced. Apart from the wolf's small size he could make that out while looking at the green venom dripping down to the forest floor. The older venomous wolves get and the more prey they have eaten over the years, the stronger their venom would get until it becomes a dark purple in colour making them truly lethal.

Now that Ari confirmed that he had a chance of beating the wolf he forcefully calmed himself down and shot an arrow aiming right for the head of the beast. The wolf however simply sidestepped and shot at Ari with surprising speed. Ari quickly threw away his bow and pulled free his carving knife. Now with his small knife in one hand and an arrow in the other Ari hurriedly leaned to the side and slashed at the wolf that flew past him faster than what should have been possible. A shallow wound appeared on the wolf's side his fell turning crimson, the crazed wolf however doesn't seem to notice the small wound at all and pounces again at Ari, who quickly tries to sidestep again but failes and is thrown around in the air when a throbbing pain starts spreading from his left shoulder. Ari tries to scramble to his feet but the beast is faster than he is and sends him tumbling through the air again. This time he has no time to stand up and the wolf viciously bites down on his already hurting arm.

At this moment Ari felt something he never felt before. Fear. He was afraid of dying and desperately tried to get the wolf off him. Only when dark spots already clouded his vision did he realise he wouldn't be able to get the beast off him. He racked his brain looking for a way out and screamed in his mind at his surroundings, to someone to help him, when he yanked the arrow towards the wolf one last time.

Judging by the sun a few hours have passed since Ari fell unconscious and the sight of the dead wolf atop of him jolted him fully awake. He pushed the beast of him and tried to remember what had happened to him. His surprise reached its peak when he saw the huge hole that went straight through the wolfs side and he stopped to look around for the source when he saw his arrow logged into a tree a few metres away. The wood was brittle and looked like it would fall apart with the slightest touch but it was still apparent that this arrow was responsible for killing the wolf however Ari had no idea how he did that. He remembered desperately calling anything, anyone for help and then falling unconscious.

The next surprise concerned his wound. The wolf's poison had been completely expelled and dripped down his arm, his wound having stopped bleeding some time ago. Even though Ari had no Idea what just happened he was happy to be alive and quickly bundled up the remains of the small beast in order to head for the next stream to wash his wounds just in case there was still some poison remaining.
