Chapter 9 - Picking the parents for Karna

Before Ganga could inquire about the couple, Indra preempted her, a sense of foreboding already gnawing at his heart. He worried that Suryadev's mention of a powerful being could refer to mighty mortal kings or childless gods. Should that be the case, Indra swore to himself that he would never allow such a threat to emerge.

Intuiting Indra's inner musings, Suryadev stepped forward, sharing his thoughts. "Indeed, there is a devout couple who have fervently prayed for a child. I have decided to grant their long-awaited wish. They hail from the realm of Sudhar, but they will embrace this child as their own. Lady Ganga, I beseech you to accept and guide this child along their destined path."

Upon hearing Surya's words, Indra's concerns were allayed. It appeared that the child's origins were linked to mortal kings or powerful individuals who dwelled in seclusion. A sigh of relief escaped Indra, for he had witnessed over countless centuries how those who attained great power inevitably sought him out, either to challenge his authority or to vie for his celestial throne.

Author's Commentary: How amusing this must be for us, though perhaps not so for you. (Chuckles internally.)

Lady Ganga nodded in response, her agreement silently conveyed.

Having heard the conclusion of the discussion, Devraj Indra found no reason to linger. He had other matters to attend to in Swarag, as he had been in the midst of witnessing the celestial dance of the apsaras, accompanied by other divine beings.

With this in mind, Devraj Indra vanished in a blaze of lightning, leaving behind only shimmering remnants.

Observing Indra's departure, and ensuring that he had truly left, Devi Ganga employed her divine powers to erect a barrier, her hand gesturing upward. This protective barrier enshrouded Suryadev, Devi Ganga, and the child cradled in her arms. The purpose of this barrier was to conceal their conversation, ensuring that no prying eyes, particularly the paranoid king of gods, could eavesdrop on their discussion.

Suryadev, taken aback by Devi Ganga's actions, remained passive, awaiting an explanation. His expression mirrored his expectation that she would elucidate her reasons for raising the barrier.

Perceiving his questioning gaze, Devi Ganga comprehended his uncertainty. She approached Suryadev, closing the distance between them until she stood two steps away. Though she possessed the ability to project her voice to specific individuals across millions of miles, concealed from others' perception, she sought every possible precaution to prevent the detection of divine fluctuations by other gods.

Devi Ganga began, "Surya Dev, I raised this barrier not only to dispel any confusion you may have, but also to convey vital and weighty information."

Suryadev nodded, granting her permission to proceed. During the brief interval of his nod, his thoughts churned, surmising that Devraj Indra might be involved in some form of scheming. He harbored a suspicion deep within that this conversation concerned the child in Devi Ganga's arms. However, he adeptly masked any indication of his inner turmoil, for he anxiously guarded the secret that the child was, in fact, his own. This revelation must remain concealed, as it held immense significance for the future, one that required utmost secrecy to fulfill its grand purpose.

Acknowledging Suryadev's nod, Devi Ganga continued her discourse. "Dev, this pertains to the child before us. Initially, I sensed something peculiar about this child when I attempted to aid him. However, let us not delve too deeply into that matter. Dev, I have discovered that this child is not wholly mortal, but rather, a half-divine being. You understand the implications, do you not?" Her final words posed a question to Suryadev.

"That would imply this child is either an incarnation of a god in the mortal world or demigod in other words" Suryadev responded, relief swelling within him that Devi Ganga was aware only of the child's half-divine nature, ignorant of any hints about his true origin.

"Yes, Dev. I implore you to protect this child from the fate of a Sudra. I have gleaned some knowledge of his royal lineage, and I cannot bear to see this child burdened with hardships that were never meant for him. I discovered the tragedy of his abandonment shortly after his birth, a cruel fate he did not deserve, a consequence of his mother's error. Yet, instead of her facing punishment, he is the one who has suffered," Lady Ganga declared. Though she had intended to withhold her emotions and restrain such words, she found herself unable to suppress the torrent of sentiment in this moment.

Within Suryadev, a spark of joy ignited, reassured that there were still those who wished the best for his son. He understood that Devi Ganga possessed a mother's heart, rekindled by this child, for she had once been compelled to sacrifice her own seven children, the Saptarishis, in order to absolve them of past transgressions. However, returning to his senses and contemplating his response, bitterness tinted his words. "Devi, though I too yearn for a brighter future for this child, I am bound by the niyati, the threads of fate, to fulfill my role. That role demands that I guide this child toward the Sudra couple. I cannot alter or interfere with this predetermined path."

Exhaling a sigh, Suryadev continued, "Devi, believe me when I say that the child shall be cherished and loved by these parents, and I shall content myself with glimpsing his visage." A twinge of sorrow mingled with apprehension, for even though he was in such close proximity to his child, he was inexplicably unable to touch or cradle him in his arms.
