Professor A exclaimed, "Guess what? The liquid in my hand is not some special synthetic drug; it's just ordinary fresh blood."
Excitedly, Professor A went on to explain, "It's amazing! It maintains a blade-like form when it's in its normal state, with very low RC cells activity. I call it the 'hunger' state. But when it comes into contact with blood, it awakens."
"Moreover, based on the current experiments, the more it is fed, the stronger its RC cells activity becomes. However, we haven't reached the limit yet, and I'm concerned about losing control."
Amazed, Lin Yi looked at the blood-red long sword in his hand.
This Quinque was truly remarkable.
Curiously, Lin Yi asked, "Does it have a name?"
"Because it possesses snake-like characteristics, I named it Jörmungandr," Professor A replied.
"That's a cool name," Lin Yi praised as he put the Quinque back into the suitcase. "With this Quinque, I'll make the most of it."
"I trust you and Mr. Shinohara, but there's one more thing I want to ask. The experiments with this Quinque aren't finished yet. If you encounter any special situations while using it in battle, please document and report them. It could help improve Quinque weapons in the CCG."
"I understand," Lin Yi casually agreed. It wasn't a significant issue.
Whether he would report any future incidents remained to be seen.
After finishing their work at the Ghoul Weapon Research Institute, Professor A left on his own. Lin Yi and Yukinori Shinohara also left without disturbing him.
"Now that you have your Quinque, let me introduce you to your future superior and comrade," Yukinori Shinohara said as he led Lin Yi to a reception room.
Inside, a middle-aged man was sitting. He appeared younger than his age, with white hair, a hunched back, and a gray windbreaker. He seemed bored, reading a newspaper.
"Yukinori, you're slow. You wasted a lot of my time," the man looked up. He had a smile on his face, but there was something unsettling about it.
"Kureo Mado," Lin Yi quickly recalled from the anime and realized, "Is it that guy? The man who witnessed his wife being killed by a ghoul and developed a deep hatred towards ghouls."
"Yukinori, do you know how many pests run rampant in this city every day, like rats?" Kureo Mado casually remarked, assessing Lin Yi. "So, this is the newbie you recommended."
"Don't underestimate him. Let me introduce you to Lin Yi. He used to be a foreign student and just joined the CCG today. He was promoted to a second-class investigator ahead of others," Yukinori Shinohara didn't delve into the details of Lin Yi's achievements or background.
Both of them were smart enough to know that the CCG had strict rules about investigator ranks. Even with connections, immediate promotion wasn't possible. Premature promotion would only lead to failure and death.
A young and inexperienced man who hadn't undergone investigator training becoming a second-class investigator directly must have his own value.
"Haha, I hope he's not as weird as that guy," Kureo Mado joked.
"Who knows?" Yukinori Shinohara shrugged and glanced at Lin Yi, then continued, "From now on, you'll be working with Kureo Mado on higher-level missions. Don't underestimate him. He has been in many battles, killing over a hundred ghouls. His achievements are enough for a special promotion. You can learn a lot from him."
"I understand," Lin Yi nodded. Despite Kureo Mado's eccentricity, having an experienced superior to guide him was a good thing.
"Let's go. We've already wasted enough time."
Clearly, Kureo Mado didn't want to waste any more words. In his opinion, nothing could beat the knowledge gained from actual combat.
Leading the way, Kureo Mado headed to the underground parking lot.
Lin Yi obediently followed behind. He instantly felt relieved once they left the CCG. That place always made people tense.
As Kureo Mado found his car and started the engine, Lin Yi had already lit a cigarette.
Feeling uncomfortable under Kureo Mado's gaze, Lin Yi finally spoke up.
"Do you smoke?"
No one would feel comfortable being stared at by someone who looked like a madman.
"No," Kureo Mado replied shortly and got into the car.
Lin Yi casually sat in the passenger seat, opened the window, and began exhaling smoke. At the same time, he asked, "Investigator Mado, where are we going?"
"I'll teach you your first lesson right now. As an investigator, you must learn to catch rats on your own," Kureo Mado said with a smile, handing Lin Yi a newspaper.
Lin Yi glanced at it. It was the morning paper he had already read at the hospital.
There were various news articles, most of which he skimmed through without paying much attention.
"Do you have a general understanding of each ward?" Kureo Mado asked.
"I have a rough idea," Lin Yi nodded.
"The First to Fourth Wards are known as Hell. They have always been difficult areas for investigators to fully control. That's why they have the fewest residents but the highest concentration of ghouls."
"So, there are more hunters than prey?" Lin Yi joked.
"You're smart. In these areas, the ghouls have strict territories and don't allow other ghouls inside."
"The ghoul called 'Foodbird' is one of the big ghouls, right?" Lin Yi quickly understood. The ghoul he killed earlier, the homeless ghoul, must have been one of the big ghouls there.
When a big ghoul in a territory is eliminated, there are no restrictions, and the surviving ghouls from the cracks of the First Ward will rush in eagerly.
It's like a sheep without a shepherd, walking into the wolf's den.
"It's going to be lively tonight, right?"
"Of course," Kureo Mado replied with certainty. "The police recently released the news, and it takes some time for the bait to attract the prey. Now is the perfect time."
