Chapter 7 - Jörmungandr

There are four main types of Kagune possessed by Ghouls. Each type has unique characteristics and abilities.

1. Ukaku Kagune ("feather-red"): This type is released from the shoulder area and resembles spread-out feathers. It excels in high-speed attacks and grants the users enhanced speed.

2. Koukaku Kagune ("shell-red"): Released below the shoulder blade, this type has a high density of Rc cells, making it heavy and extremely durable. It is well-suited for defense but lacks speed and can be challenging to wield.

3. Rinkaku Kagune ("scale-red"): This type appears as scaled tentacles and is released around the waist. Rinkaku users possess powerful regenerative abilities, enabling them to survive critical damage.

4. Bikaku Kagune ("tail-red"): Typically taking on a tail-like appearance, this type is released around the tail-bone/coccyx. It offers decent offense, defense, and speed, making it suitable for medium-distance attacks.

Among these types, Koukaku Kagune is the most common among Ghouls.

In the current group, all members possess Koukaku Kagune. They utilize the heavy weight and limited agility of this type to their advantage, strategically retreating to create distance and find openings.

During the battle, the purple-haired ghoul realizes something is wrong when he hears the roar of the mohawk ghoul. He realizes that he has been on the offensive while the other side has been predominantly defensive.

Feeling uneasy, the purple-haired ghoul abruptly stops his attack and prepares to retreat.

However, Lin Yi, his opponent, challenges him by countering with a swing of his sword. In a swift motion, Lin Yi severs the right hand wrapped in kagune, causing it to fly into the air.

With a single blow, Lin Yi renders his opponent combat ineffective.

The purple-haired ghoul screams in pain, clutching the heavily bleeding wound. The wound begins to clot, indicating his regenerative abilities.

Lin Yi acknowledges the strength of his opponent and considers him a formidable monster. If the same wound appeared on a ghoul ranked S or above, it would likely heal instantaneously.

Despite his recognition, Lin Yi shows no mercy and continues his merciless assault. He views his opponents as mere materials and swiftly slices the purple-haired ghoul into three pieces. Despite possessing a Koukaku Kagune, the ghoul lies motionless.

After struggling on the ground for a brief moment, the ghoul ceases to breathe, resembling a fish thrown ashore.

Lin Yi's weapon, Jörmungandr, absorbs the fresh blood, transmitting a sense of excitement to him.

Trying to calm the weapon down, Lin Yi reassures Jörmungandr that once they deal with the remaining ghouls, it can feast to its heart's content. He notices that Jörmungandr has transformed and become even heavier than when he first obtained it from the research institute. This increase in weight allows the weapon to easily sever the armor kagune of a B-ranked ghoul, indicating enhanced hardness.

Lin Yi unintentionally glances at the shriveled corpse in red clothes, wondering if the woman was a Rinkaku Kagune user.

He realizes that Jörmungandr is not just a weapon that can enter a berserk state by drinking blood; it can continuously evolve.

This realization enlightens Lin Yi as he observes the numerous ghouls in front of him. He has found the answer—a similarity between cannibalism among ghouls and the capabilities of his weapon.

Cannibalism refers to Ghouls consuming other Ghouls, absorbing RC cells from the consumed individuals. This process increases the concentration of RC cells in their bodies, theoretically enhancing their physical qualities and combat abilities. The strength of the consumed ghoul determines the potential for improvement. Repeated cannibalism can even lead Ghouls to evolve into abnormal beings called "Kakuja."

Lin Yi realizes that his weapon, the Quinque, is capable of cannibalism. This revelation fills him with excitement.

As Lin Yi kills two of his companions in succession, the Mohawk Ghoul roars in anger, urging his remaining comrades to tear Lin Yi to pieces.

In the dimly lit alley, a dozen Ghouls swiftly move, their movements accompanied by whistling sounds.

Amidst them, Lin Yi effortlessly maneuvers, wielding his Quinque resembling a towering dragon. He splatters blood and reaps lives with each strike.

Lin Yi acknowledges that he underestimated the enhancements provided by the system. The physical abilities of humans, even the most skilled special forces soldiers or athletes, pale in comparison to the system's capabilities.

The Ghouls' attacks, although fast enough to create afterimages, appear slow in Lin Yi's eyes. He easily captures their movements and evades their attacks.

With Jörmungandr, Lin Yi doesn't need to engage in hand-to-hand combat. A single slash, avoiding the protection of their Kagune, is sufficient to end their lives.

As Lin Yi stabs the Mohawk Ghoul in the neck, his Quinque greedily drinks blood. It no longer resembles a sword but rather a devouring beast.

In his final moments, the dying Ghoul's eyes widen with disbelief as he mutters, "You! You're not human at all!"

Among the corpses, only one small and skinny Ghoul remains alive. He appears young, perhaps only seventeen or eighteen years old. It is unclear how he ended up in this group.

The young ghoul is visibly frightened, and his instinct is to run upon meeting Lin Yi's gaze. Realizing that no one is pursuing him, he sighs with relief and disappears into the darkness.

Lin Yi stands, sheathing his sword, while the Quinque in his hand has enjoyed its "feast." The handle of the knife trembles slightly, conveying an unprecedented sense of satisfaction and excitement to him.

After absorbing the Mohawk Ghoul completely, the Quinque returns to its original form. The metallic texture of the entire blade becomes extraordinarily sharp.

Instead of pursuing the young Ghoul, Lin Yi chooses to wait.

After about a dozen breaths, a scream suddenly echoes from the darkness of the alley, followed by silence.

Emerging from the darkness, Kureo Mado appears, carrying a corpse in his left hand and wielding the purple-shaped Quinque. His eyes show no signs of panic, only madness and excitement as he looks at Lin Yi surrounded by corpses.
