There was something in Kier's eyes that Ina loved to see every time she met with the Mage. It wasn't just the streaks around his pupils. It was the look itself. As if he saw things others didn't pay attention to. She liked that.
But she hated it right now. It was compelling her to say yes, to trust him, even though she didn't really want to.
And he was kneeling. At her feet. The guy who had persuaded a Shadow to simply walk away was begging for something from her.
Athyn's jaw had dropped the moment Kier's knees touched the floor. Medes and Mina flew to alight on the floor one at each side of Peppermint. She looked unworriedly, if a little slyly, at the scene.
"It looks like she's going to say yes," whispered Medes.
"Yeah," said Mina.
"Maybe." Peppermint shrugged. She spoke louder than was necessary and looked at Kier. "I'm gonna say no, whatever she says."
