The guide fired her rifle twice. Two of the shadow creatures disappeared as a magic bullet found its mark in their chests and a flash of light consumed them. Three other shadows jumped forward, but the quick and practiced swings of the man's knives consumed them as white flames ate the black stuff that comprised them.
"Like hot knives through butter," he said.
"Quiet," the guide whispered harshly.
Silence reigned for a second. Then the ground quaked once, twice…
"Time to run," said the guide.
