Verity's POV
I anxiously waited for my mate to return; Natalie had been quiet since discovering we had failed to be marked by Jacob. It's been over half an hour, even while waiting for him to cook the corn soup and venison, which suddenly ended up in my kitchen. Maybe it was brought by Liliana because my best friend would occasionally bring raw ingredients for me to eat.
And now I've drizzled the corn soup and roast beef onto a plate with some corners fired. Sitting at the kitchen table, which is as old as this house, bought because before, without knowing myself, I asked the mother to buy a dining table for them to celebrate a festival which they never went to because they could not bear the blasphemy and curses of the Moon pack herd.
My mate's favorite dish, I was also hungry in the end. I couldn't resist eating first without waiting for Jacob's arrival, which disappointed my heart. Because maybe, her mate just realized this ridiculous fate. Moreover, I was aware and thinking clearly; my mate was Jacob Night.
Rocco Night and Jacob's alpha eldest son is the current alpha candidate, but he's paired with me. A mixed-blood human omega wolf that is considered dirty and violates the decrees of the moon gods will be a big mess if it gets caught by the Moon pack.
When I took the last bite, I couldn't help but feel sad, "Ah, how could he regret knowing that I was his mate..." my tears rolled down my cheeks; I tried to stop the tears by rubbing even though it was useless. "My mom said I should live well. I'm fine if I get rejected and die lonely; I'm okay—"
I looked up surprised when the door of my house was broken down, "VERITY! WHAT HAPPENED? I heard the sound of crying. Verity!!!" Jacob came in after kicking hard at the door of his rickety house, and it flew off the hinges with a bang. "Verity, honey... who made you cry?" he quickly took me to his lap.
And after that, I covered my face, embarrassed, looking at Jacob, explaining my fear after being forced by him. Even though I stuttered when I spoke, I said it honestly, which was quite surprising. Because even to my best friend, I'm still embarrassed to express everything he thinks honestly.
Since then, a year has passed, and I have a new reason to live happily until now. It's been a few days since I had difficulty meeting my mate; he advised me that coming to my house would be difficult.
Even though this house has been modestly renovated by him so as not to become suspicious of my neighbors who know that I live alone, an omega without a mother or mate, that's what they know since my mother's death, I stopped working since a server in a restaurant on the outskirts of downtown Moon pack.
Jacob is currently busy with his appointment as the new alpha of my pack in North Osiris. Osiris is the name of the continent where I now live has four city centers and a border of a large forest called Minerva.
Our pack isn't as extensive as the Night pack in Southern Osiris, but at least we have the most pureblood packs. Because from what I heard, in the Night pack, wolves have mixed human blood, which is considered dirty and weak in the Moon pack. In the moon pack, marking other than a mate, let alone a human being, violates the Moon Goddess' stipulation that a sinner and his offspring are deemed useless to be a herd of enslaved people like me.
I also have a more petite body than the usual wolves; my eyes are not sapphire like a moon pack. It's light green as if you're entering a lush forest lit by the morning sun. It was beautiful; I loved my eyes as they stared at themselves in the reflection of my mother's old bronze mirror.
I'm sneaking out through the market on a busy day wearing a hooded cloak and covering my big pregnancy too. Not wanting to get in trouble for going out in the morning, I realized that everyone was disgusted and looked at me with contempt for having human blood in my blood. When I think of the fresh berries that grow in the forest, it feels like my saliva is dripping profusely by this time.
My house is in the west part of Moon Pack; Wood Sorin is in the south, which has to pass through the market section near the bustling downtown. While I haven't wanted to meet many people since I quit working at Aunt Hilda's bar, I don't want to be subjected to violence from a pack that hates my bloodline.
"Ouch!" I stopped walking to look down and rub my tightened stomach. "Calm down, son... Mommy is looking for the berry you want in case your father finds out we are going to the woods with Minerva. Finish us!" I said, walking again while continuing to look down, avoiding glances at the people passing by at this time.
If Jacob finds out, he'll be furious with me. But I wanted fresh berries that thrive in the forest because I was walking while looking down without realizing that I bumped into someone who made me fall hard enough.
"Argh!" I immediately held my stomach, protecting my son from impact, even though it was useless because of the painful cramps that hit my stomach.
"Wow! Dirty-blooded son of a bitch, where have you been all this time. We haven't seen you out in a few months." Said the person I hit.
I saw a massive figure with deep blue eyes ready to drown me in misery, Lorcan. He is big, his stomach is more forward than the last I saw him, and his eyes are even more disgusting when I look at him. We were the same age, but Lorcan now looked thirty years older than me.
The man who once confessed his feelings to me is now in front of my eyes, damn it. Why should it be now? I was in a hurry but instead met the most challenging obstacle that I could face.
Lorcan used to be my best friend, but once he confessed his love and thought we were future mates before I turned him down. His character completely changed; he abused me, hit me, insulted me, and even abused me with some friends who didn't like my bloodline.
He always played his lines in front of many people, which resulted in people blaming me, not him. I stood up, pulled up my hood, and tried to ignore him, and failed because he gripped my arm tightly.
"Hey, hey! I was talking to you; why didn't you answer." I didn't want to attract people's attention, but the current state of affairs caused several pairs of eyes to start glancing our way.
"Let go!" I don't want to say much to him.
He laughed when I said, "Heh! Don't expect me just to let you go; I heard you no longer work at my Aunt's bar. Did you sell your body for money, moreover I heard you are pregnant without a mate!! What? A hypocritical bitch!" he was talking too much gibberish, Natalie my wolf started barking furiously wanting to take over my consciousness.
'Let me out!! I want to bite this bastard's neck; he's fucking like shit!!'
"Get off me, Lorcan! Please..." I stared into his sapphire eyes; he was stunned before growling and letting me go.
"Damn it! Stay bitch; I can let you go as long as you sleep with me!" he said again, making Natalie angrier and hurting my head because of her constant growling.
I failed to restrain Natalie, who immediately came to her senses and replied, "You crazy bastard!! You useless piece of shit, get out of my sight!!" the aura that Natalie gave off as a Luna made Lorcan's figure suddenly squeak in fear like a wolf finding an alpha, they barked a little lowering their heads lower when Natalie took a step closer.
"Get away from me, you suckling pig, before I bite your neck off!" the threat worked but got everyone's attention a lot more, and it was terrible.
"…Look, it's that troublemaker and mixed-blood; looks like he's being bullied again."
"…Never mind, just ignore them."
"...Dirty blood is coming out of her house; what disaster will happen here?"
"... That's possible; we should tell everyone about this."
"...From what I've heard, she's mixed blood, but human blood predominates. Moreover, no one has ever seen her in Verity's wolf form; it justifies everyone's opinion that he seems to be in his human form."
"…Disgusting, she's a weak human but allowed to stay in our pack!!"
"…The value of the Moon pack is low and looks weak because of her being here; why didn't the alpha send her away when she came with her mother from Sorin Wood long ago!!"
'I want to kill them all, Verity!!'
No, not again, Natalie. We are their Luna; we are more robust, and we should not, as a leader, oppress those who do not know the truth.
'So naive, they will never change forever!' Natalie said before disappearing from my thoughts; she was probably furious.
I heard all that as I managed to regain my senses and left in front of Lorcan, who was pissing his pants in fright; I glanced at him briefly before leaving, quite happy to have replied.
'Look at your big grin; I told you long ago to fight him!!' said Natalie, my grumpy wolf.
.....
I closed the house door with a hunting breath and put a basket filled with berries on my old kitchen table. I walked towards my bronze mirror to see my clothes torn and my arms and knees bloodied. My forehead and cheeks are also bleeding; my chin is blue.
I thought I had won to scare Lorcan to the point of pissing; when I came out of the forest, I was shocked he brought his trash group again, throwing stones at me without stopping. Even though I ran away, they followed me to the city's edge. They didn't dare come close.
My house is right on the forest border, and Minerva's is on the other side; I sobbed when I realized the aching pain in the injured part.
"What happened to you!" I was bearded in surprise when I saw my mate's figure there, wearing no top but his jeans looking at me with golden yellow eyes that looked very angry.
"Jacob, I-I just..."
"You're injured!!" I was quickly naked by him, standing before my mate, who looked at my whole body from top to bottom. I looked down in fear to see my knee bleeding again; there was an abrasion on the side of my stomach too.
"Oh, my goodness! Who did this to you?!" he asked in disbelief after seeing my wound. "And again, where did you go to get injured like this!"
"Sorry... I went to S-Sorin Wood to pick fresh berries; I didn't think I would meet my bullies..." I stuttered without daring to look him in the eye. I knew he was angry at the same time as the growl sounded; I was also quite cold because I was standing naked in front of my mate. "B-but... can I get dressed first? It's cold, Jacob..."
I saw his surprised face move to my wooden cupboard; he took her top and put it on me immediately. It was warm; the scent also belonged to my mate. Natalie sounded spoiled when she smelled his odor. I looked up again when I heard his sighing voice; I saw guilt.
"I'm sorry… I'm too much, but please don't go to Sorin Wood anymore. I don't want to lose you; I'm still too weak to protect you from the flock that hates mixed blood. I'm afraid of losing you, Verity…." The voice sounded weaker at the end of the sentence, his eyes turned red, and I reflexively hugged his waist tightly.
I feel guilty too and can only say one word, "Sorry..."
