Chapter 6 - Work

Sybil woke up feeling exhausted. She layed in bed for a few seconds before checking the time. "OMG!" she squeaked loudly. "It's 7:50am? how the hell did I wake up late? This is why I shouldn't have accepted Diana's offer to go for the company's dinner last night." She rampaged as she went around frantically picking her work clothes from her closet.

She walked into the bathroom and took a quick shower. She came out looking refreshed. She rushed quickly to her make up table. Sybil doesn't do extravagant makeup but she still looks flawlessly elegant and beautiful.

She applied a pale pink lipstick to complement the colour of her lips. She went to her shoe rack to pick out a pale pink heels to complement her suit.

She stood staring at her reflection and accessing her outfit in the full length mirror in her room. She was wearing a pink pants suit with a black Inner shirt. She slid on her pale pink heels which completed her outfit. Sybil was looking more of a boss than a colleague. The pink suit was a nice contrast with her dark skin.

Since she got promoted 10 months ago, she had decided to get rid of her 'shabby' outfits and have a do-over for her closet.

She wore her silver wristwatch to complete the final result.

She checked her time and grabbed her bag in haste and bolted out her room.

"Good morning". she greeted as she sped past Diana in the kitchen. "Did you have breakfast yet?" Diana yelled back from the kitchen but Sybil didn't hear because she had bolted out of the apartment.

Diana has been living with Sybil since their college days and now they were full time working women. When Sybil was Searching for a job, Dina had helped her find one but it took long for her to get accepted because of her skin colour.

After many efforts of trying to convince the CEO of the company with her qualifications and degree, she got the job but was still in the discriminative zone.

She proved herself worthy and became the top colleague at the company and the first black woman to ever become a project manager in 'The Golden Globe'.

Sybil got into her car and raced off. She wasn't going to be scolded by her boss today or ever. She had always been a punctual person but anytime she's with Diana, she goes haywire and lose it.

She got to work and rushed out of her car to the elevator. She checked her time 8:56 she grew impatient as she stood waiting for the lift to stop. She hoped silently that her boss hadn't come even though she knew otherwise. Her boss is also a punctual and time cautious man.

She had expected him to be lazy yet hardworking and arrogant but he wasn't. He was rather carefree.

Immediately the elevator door opened she was left shock at who she saw.

He was standing right in front of her, Mr Anthony Coleman, her boss. It's as if he was waiting for her. Had he know she hasn't come? why is he here? is he going somewhere? All these questions kept ringing in her head.

The bells in her head wouldn't stop sounding. It's was as if she were caught red handed in a crime scene. Well she was.

"Where have you been Miss Torres?" that was the first thing he uttered. Standing speechless and mute, she didn't know how to reply to that question but she knew better than not to keep quiet when your boss asks you a question.

Obviously she couldn't tell him she was hungover from drinking late last night. She began thinking of a reasonable excuse to tell him.

"I--

"When I gave you a promotion, it was because I trusted you and believed you wouldn't let me down. Heading a department comes with great responsibility and hardwork. I expect you to be more responsible now as you are a team manager. You won't let this mistake happen again." he paused. "I expect it on my table before lunch time." he left leaving no room for further ado.

Defeated, she left for her office and decided to start her day activities. She began her paperwork and cross-checked all the documents that needed his signature.

He always expect the best from his employees and she could see the disappointment on his face earlier. He had never had that kind of expression on his face whenever it was about her. She hadn't even been in this kind of mess since she started working here.

After hours of reading, she gathered the documents and took it to the CEO's office for approval or rejection.

She knocked on his door and heard a faint 'come in'. She pushed the door open and walked towards his table. She place the documents down and turned around to leave but stopped in her tracks at his statement.

"I expected you to ace your game when I promoted you. The slightest mistake could lead to a huge problem."

She left without saying a word. Fortunately, she didn't regret what happend last night. Instead she enjoyed it and hope she could have a stress free time like that again.
