Chapter 56 - The Children

Sitting down Arthas felt worried about the consequences of trusting the random person that just joined, he was anxious as he knew that if he got caught he would be dead.

There's nothing I can do once I'm close, Arthas thought pulling the seat closer and adjusting his posture.

The Arbiter continued to look at him with a disparity of emotions that couldn't be read.

The blue theme exudes tranquility and peaceful intent, but he knows there's more to it than meets the eye.

Mayward calmed down and proceeded to walk where they both were sitting and did the same thing.

"Damn annoying dust.." He muttered while patting his shoulders before sighing.

Both Arthas's rexes came closer being protective of their owner.

Smoke came out from Nemesis's mouth seemingly intimidating the men sitting with Arthas, while Morpheus cast his red glaring eyes on them.

"To properly introduce ourselves, Mayward is the son of Duke Saroth, one of the pillars of Moonglade. And I am Roland, the son of Duke Ultima, and the messenger laid with a message from his Majesty."

He opened his hands and gave a letter that was sealed with a crest on the paper.

Arthas gently accepted the letter and began to read its contents. Inside was an intricately sophisticated format made of black ink written in a cursive type of manner.

"Ahem, Her Majesty would not be the one who would suffice with sophistry, so I would enumerate the letter in concise detail."

Roland placed his hand forward, asking for the letter that Arthas held to.

Arthas gave the letter back and he listened attentively as to what it was about.

"The Majesty states about the circumstance of the kingdom, the war with Valoria is placed on a stalemate and truce, because of a deduced anomaly. You. No origin, unknown summons, and…" Roland looked directly at Arthas, "The imbalance of power of a weak physical and magical divide, has managed to suppress and kill a city class monster."

"Hold on, before we continue, what are city-class monsters?" Arthas asked curious about the phrase.

Roland looked at him with shock before he continued to talk "And apparently, a disparity of knowledge regarding the systemic conditions."

Oh shoot I think I just dug my own grave, Arthas thought as he realized that he messed up.

Mayward, who was sitting silently, made remarks.

"Come on, Roland. There were no misdeeds that the boy made. Besides you scare animals, much more men…and women."

"Shut up, and you better get things straight, rumors are spreading and they aren't pretty."

"They can think what they want, I did my best and did my job, and I got the kids to safety. Isn't that wonderful?"

The kids?, Arthas was spooked by that phrase and remembered his purpose.

"You! Where are they? Mayward, what happened to them?!" Arthas stomped his hands on the table and stood up with an intense glare in his eyes.

Nemesis and Morpheus sensed his emotional turmoil and growled with a deep fierce sound.

The atmosphere swirled with animosity as Artha's cautious levels rose to levels.

"Calm down Arthas, that was a lie! They're all safe. I have them kept under protection." Roland yelled at him.

"What do you mean? Prove it to me!"

A strong gust of wind flung the door open and a large number of children stood still with oversized uniforms of maids and butlers.

They all look fascinated as their eyes are focused on Nemesis and Morpheus, sparkling as they stare.

Arthas was confused about the sudden appearance and their weird uniforms that made them feel unconventional.

His gaze swept over them as they walked out of the shade, seemingly testing the atmosphere.

Arthas landed on both Mayward and Roland who had a face of sadistic pleasure and Roland who wore a stern look.

Mayward especially had a look of patronizing face as if telling Arthas that he got em'.

You got me alright you idiots, you got me good, Arthas inwardly smiled as he realized he was played upon by their schemes.

Roland raised his palm upward towards the children making them stop in their tracks.

"I'll tell you about the situation we are in Arthas. Listen don't cut me off."

He began to explain about the inception of the story.

"When those monsters arrived the kingdom was well aware of their movements, so they decided to send Frederick and an army to help defend the city. It was a book move until the oracle foresaw something a week before our meeting."

Roland formed his hand into a horizontal diamond-shaped structure, inside was a ball of wind visible to the naked eye.

What's that is that a pupil or something? Arthas wondered about the strange hand signs that Roland did.

"That is the eye of providence," Mayward answered before Arthas could ask. "Before we continue with the story I digress that we talk about my disappearances."

He adjusted his clothes tidied his suit grabbed a tea cup and drank it till it was empty.

'Where did he get the cup from? Arthas thought.

Mayward laid down an enormous sigh of relief looked towards the kids and gave them a signal with his hands.

After that small gesture, the kids ran out towards Morpheus and Nemesis, but they couldn't too close to Nemesis as he was too warm for them to get too close.

They ran around, playing across the garden that was riddled with footsteps and holes created by the scuffle.

Moltar was still lying on the ground, unconscious but he slowly opened his eyes to find himself in a daze as the village children were right in front of his eyes.

Then his eyes wandered towards Arthas, Mayward, and another person, he knew who that was. Roland, The Tornados Plight.

Seeing as they seemed to be having a good time, he laid down on the ground pretended to sleep, and let them be on their way.

"When the monsters came, it was true I ran away, but not because I was afraid. But because I was tasked with something else. Her Majesty told me to keep this confidential but seeing as things as they are, this could be an exception. There's always an exception right?"

'See Ralia, there's always an exception!', Arthas thought as he listened attentively.

"As part of the Moon's Shade, I was told to look for the Lizard's Base of Operations. And that I did, after doing so I helped the city the sneakiest and stealthily helped with what I could. Why do you think Alcemia still stands even after all this time despite the number disadvantage."

"Then why did you take the children and why are they wearing oversized maid and butler uniforms?"

"That's because of Vendetta, Arthas I know you know about darklings already based on the fact that you emit a tiny wave of energy of dead aura that you won't feel unless you see through it with great difficulty. I'm really curious as to who you are but I won't pry."

Arthas was curious about how knowledgeable Mayward was about the Darklings.

"Thank you, Then what about Vendetta?"

"It's a dark organization known to worship the Darkling's Master and offer sacrifices to summon countless Darklings to ravage kingdoms. By that, I took note of their movements and found they were involved with the attack and targeted the village, and found that they were after them, specifically the kids."

"What are the kids for? Weirdos, trying to get kids." Arthas scoffed. "Disgusting. So what's their part of their plan."

"It isn't something promiscuously illicit, but more vile. They all use them as sacrifices to summon a species of Darkling, A Demon. Demons are generally loathed because of past histories edged into society. Another thing is that they are very strong, which makes them very difficult to summon. They need at least a hundred pure-hearted individuals, what's more purer than children?" Mayward watched the kids play along the field curious about the dinosaurs staying behind.

"If what you say is true, then I am guessing that's the reason why you took all of them from the village, They would make the perfect target, they have the population and are isolated from the city."

Arthas understands the plan and how it lines with the weird interactions and communication with the village.

This guy is a freaking weirdo and dangerous I can't understand him at all, Arthas thought as he assessed Mayward's confusing personality.

A serene high pitch rang through the air, and both of them looked at where it came from.

"Looks like Roland is done communicating with the attendant." Mayward smiled at Arthas while looking at him.

After a short silence, Roland spoke in a peaceful tone.

"I've spoken with the attendant, I can only pass things that are okay to say but make it as vague as I can to him."

Roland placed both his hands on the table and looked with a stern expression.
