Chereads / White Mist / Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

It didn't take long for Rain to reach the border between the forest and the tall grass. It was rather jarring how the forest and the tall grass had a strict border between them. It wasn't like one started flowing into the other, it was instead a very strict 'wall' where the tall grass ended, and the forest began. Rain stepped out of the tall grass and into the forest. She was finally free, for the moment, from the confines of the tall grass. Rain quickly observed her surroundings in the forest, seeing nothing, she relaxed. She didn't know if going into the forest constituted going into a 'new area' and as such would start spawning monsters or something. As it is right now, she is safe. Rain began to walk along the border of the tall grass and the forest, looking for anything blue. After, a few moments of walking, Rain could see something blue a little further down from her. She quickly ran over to it, before squatting down to look at it.

What she saw, was a small blue flower with four petals and a golden pistil. The flower was oddly small, the whole thing, stem and all, was probably no bigger than her hand. "How can these things even grow," she thought to herself as she plucked the flower from the ground. She went to go put it in her inventory, but she realized she didn't have one. "Wait a second," she thought to herself as the gears in her head began to turn. "Does this mean I have to carry a bag around to pick up loot? Does that mean I can't just snatch things and put them in my inventory? I have to worry about the things I bring with me and pick up. I actually have to manage my inventory space? Oh, that is a nightmare." Rain, with no sort of storage bag, or inventory, could only put her flower into her pocket and hope for the best. As soon as she did so, she could see a small text appear in her vision.

"Well, that clarifies if that was not what I needed, or maybe, it only told me because it was a quest item." Rain shrugged her shoulders at her own thought and continued to look for more flowers. The flowers were rather sparse and took a good amount of time to just find another three. Rain looked up, and saw that the suns were much higher than they were in the morning, though they only looked to be halfway to midday now.

"Looking for flowers is stupidly boring. No wonder Miguel or the Apothercarist didn't want to look for them," Rain couldn't help but lament to herself. She had been searching on the border between the forest and the tall grass in the direction that went away from the town, but now she was heading back to where she first got out of the tall grass to try on the other side of it. Along the way, Rain would often listen to the wind blowing the tall grass, the sound of the rustling grass, the sounds of nature in the forest, as well as the occasional bird. Even if looking for flowers was boring, Rain still enjoyed being able to hear all the things this world had to offer. Along the way, Rain decided to look at her quest again to see if anything had changed.

"Well, the only things that have changed are the amount of flowers I currently have, and the time remaining. But, I guess that is good, having a quest suddenly change would be rather annoying." After she closed the quest window, she could see something blue in her sight. She quickly jogged over to it, glad to finally be done with the boring quest. She squatted down and plucked the last flower and put it in her pocket.

*Ding*

"Oh? I got another notification? What could it say," Rain asked herself.

--Quest 'Flower Collection' has updated--

-Return the Flowers to Miguel

"Oh, that update was rather untactful. But in all honestly, I only need to see that line anyway. I didn't need to see all that information again." Rain was about to stand up and head back to the town, but before she could she felt something was wrong.

She had always enjoyed listening to the sounds of the forest as she was walking about and was very appreciative of it, however it suddenly got silent. She couldn't hear anything but the wind, and the rustling of the grass. She slowly turned to look behind her and all she could see were two very large eyes, two large tusks, and a nasty snout of a massive hog standing some distance away. The thing was standing close to seven feet tall and was packed full of muscles, and it was staring right at her. She could see it stomping the ground and snorting as if it was taunting her, just begging for her to run. Rain went to grab something to defend herself with, but realized she had nothing. "I seriously need to be more prepared, that's thrice today I haven't been," Rain yelled at herself in her head.

Instead, Rain decided to very slowly start to get in a good position to start running. She was close to where she had first come into the border of the forest, and as such was still a close distance to the town. It would only take a minute or two of her running for her life to get to the village, maybe then the guards could help her. The tensions were rising, as it looked like the hog was getting restless.

Rain chose that exact moment to book it. Without even needing to look behind her, she could hear the hog chasing her. Its massive frame pounded the ground with every step it took. It was obvious that the thing was gaining on her, not even twenty seconds into running, the hog had caught up to her. Rain, in a panic, activated her 'White Mist' and jumped out to her left. In the moment she jumped she saw a few things happen. First, she saw her 'White Mist' flood the area with the mist. Second, as soon as she jumped to the side, the hog had ended up running past her, skidding to a stop, with his face twitching. It also had cut wounds all over its side and rear. Her 'White Mist' looked like it was clinging to those open wounds, and seeping into them. Lastly, she saw a notification pop up in her vision.

--You Have Entered Combat--

She could now see a name above the hog's head. 'Ravenging Hog' was what the thing was called. Throwing off her confusion, Rain immediately started running again. Running around the rear of the hog so that it would have to turn around to get her. She retracted her 'White Mist' in order to see better and was hurriedly making her way forward. In the distance, she could see the two guards standing by the gate still. She could also hear the hog had begun to start running again, as the deep and thunderous booming of its massive weight was pushing against the ground. She quickly waved her hands in the air and yelled out.

"HEEEY!" She didn't know if it was her yelling, or the sound of the hog charging, but both of them turned. She was too far out in order to figure out what their facial expressions were, but it felt like they were shocked. The guard that had come out to her the first time, booked it inside, while the guard that was in the back and had given her that terrifying pressure, grabbed his spear tighter and started running towards her. It was shocking, in just the few steps that the guard took it looked like he had crossed much more distance than he should have been able to. Much farther than she could've ever done. However, Rain was much too occupied to think much about it, it sounded like the boar had gotten closer to her again. She decided to bet on jumping again, hopefully the hog wouldn't think about it. She activated her 'White Mist' again, but jumped out to the right this time. Rain didn't know if it was because she was lucky the first time, or she had miss timed it, but even when she jumped, the hog was still close enough to basically close line her. The pain was immense and sudden. She couldn't think of any way to describe it other than being shoulder-checked by an all muscle three-hundred-pound football player. She immediately flew from the impact. She also saw in her vision a '-20%' that quickly faded. However, she did see above the hog a '-5%'. She wasn't sure what caused it, but she felt something with her mist. She didn't know how to describe the feeling, but the closest thing she could possibly think of was a desire. The mist was wanting something.

However, yet again, she was in too much danger to think about anything. She retracted her 'White Mist' and saw that the hog was skidding to a stop. It looked like it was going to turn towards her to kill her, but before it could even stop, she saw that the guard that had been running towards her had thrown his spear. She didn't know how he did it, but she saw that the spear the guard had thrown had an impossible speed. It wasn't as fast as a bullet, but it was most certainly faster than what people should throw a spear at. The spear flew straight into the boar's neck area, and it let out a howling squeal. She could see above the hog another red percent pop up. The guard sprinted to the hog, faster than a person should be able to, and quickly pulled a blade out from somewhere on his body and immediately plunged it into the hog's eye. Rain saw once more, a percentage pop up, and the boar slid to the ground, dead.
