"How do you know that?" Derek asked, but immediately felt stupid as soon as the words left his mouth.
The emblem of the school was obviously showing on both their shirts. And she was also staring right at it. Before the conversation could go any further.
Tate came over to their table with a tray holding a paper cup of chips and three bottles of soda with a small plate of ketchup. Chuck stared at the contents of the tray as it left Tate's hands till it dropped on the table.
The aroma from the chips was quite tempting and Chuck was already reaching to grab a handful. Once again, Derek slapped his hands away from the tray.
"Enjoy" Tate smiled and left the three to their meal.
Chuck frowned at Derek who just ignored him and kept on staring at the girl in their front.
'Who the hell doesn't know that you were supposed to let your chaperone have a piece first before digging in.' Derek thought.
Maya took out a bottle of soda from the tray and helped herself to a pack of chips. Derek also did the same.
Chuck stretched his hand slowly to make sure Derek wasn't making any moves to slap his hand down again, before he took the last pack and stuffed a handful into his mouth, before remembering his manners and smiling sheepishly.
Derek had mostly been staring at Maya since they sat on the table, there was something different about her.
Not that there was something wrong with her, she was pretty alright with high strung nose, slim face and all the features of a teenage girl. But there was something about her.
"I'm a half caste" Maya said. Slicing into his thoughts, my dad isn't from around.
Derek scratched his head slightly and looked away, his staring must have been so obvious.
After that, the rest of their meal was mostly eaten in silence. Chuck was busy wolfing down his food at an amazing speed.
"That good huh?" Maya asked.
Chuck nodded his head frantically in response.
"Yeah, Tate is that good. He makes the best fast food around here, at least that's what I think. I doubt some certain people agree with that, but..."
Derek was staring at Maya, he just couldn't understand why someone they'd just met would be so helpful, even though he appreciated every bit of the help, but it was just kind of suspicious.
He had mostly been this way since he lost his family and was probably going to stay this way till forever.
"Where are you from?" Derek asked Maya.
"I doubt you'd know even if I told you. Its really far and not like anyplace you have ever been or imagined" Maya replied
Derek nodded slowly, what a way to get off answering such a simple straightforward question.
"Where do the students in Bayland stay?" Derek asked again
"It's not very far from here. We could go there once we are done eating." Maya replied with her mouth half full.
'When we are done eating' Derek thought, they were actually going to be there for a while, since Derek was a very slow eater. He looked sideways at Chuck and could see that all the food on his plate had vanished.
After waiting for more than a few minutes, Derek was finally done eating. Chuck was watching him in fascination, Maya had brought out a little device which no one could say exactly what it was and fiddled with it to distract herself from the sight of Derek eating for hours.
Chuck still stared at Derek even as they stood up, he hadn't even finished his food.
Maya led the way after waving goodbye to Tate, Derek and Chuck followed closely behind walking side by side.
The three were very ready to go exploring, even Derek who was slightly on edge because he didn't fully understand Maya's intentions. But just as they stepped out of the restaurant, they could feel strong hands grab their shirts on the collar.
They looked up to see Elton's face shimmering with intimidation.
"What part of stay in your rooms couldn't you understand?" Elton boomed, his loud deep voice making the few people around turn to stare at the scene.
"Oh, you said that?" Chuck chuckled nervously, scratching his head.
"Yes, I did" Elton felt like giving them both heavy knocks on their heads.
He had gathered all the students in front of their rooms and was ready to head to the hall when he noticed that no one had come out from the room. He quickly checked his tab to see who was checked into room 7.
He wasn't surprised at all to find out that it was Derek and Chuck, luckily for him the phones which the students used were connected to his tab, so he could log in and check their locations.
Once he got their locations, he took the rest of the students to the hall and immediately headed out to get the two. After all, every teacher was responsible for their student.
Elton turned to look at the girl then back at the two boys and without acknowledging her presence he began to drag the boys back to the hotel. Maya waved at them both as they were dragged back to the hotel.
"This is a new environment for you both, you can't just go off on your own" Elton advised as he released their shirts and let them walk on their own.
"You don't even know anywhere in this place; you should stick to the others and try to get the layout of your environment before moving out on your own"
As Elton concluded, they were already at the hotel. He led them both to the hall where a banquet was being held. The hall had a long table which stretched for almost thirty meters.
A banquet was spread out on the table and all the new students from each school had a table all to their selves.
Derek face palmed himself, they had gone through all they did to get something to eat and a banquet was waiting for them right here at the hotel, even though it was Maya who paid for the meal, Derek still felt they had wasted time and energy.
