Chapter 8 - The System

The impact of the bat sent Derek flying once again, he was really sure more than half of the bones in his body were broken, but somehow, he had managed to stay conscious

The way the Ogre strolled towards him it was like the Ogre was really the batter and Derek the baseball. It was going to finish what it had started

Derek life was already hanging by a thread, the beast was only a few steps away when Derek decided to give in to the darkness. Just as he closed his eyes, a screen appeared in his vision.

[Level three beast detected. Life is threatened]

[Do you wish to eliminate the beast]

[Yes/No]

Derek didn't have much energy to ponder about what he was seeing; he just wrote it off as the visions people say they see before their death. But it didn't really matter, not like it would change anything.

Yes, was all Derek could mutter before he passed out. As the Ogre swung its club once more at an unconscious Derek, the body suddenly vanished.

The Ogre was hoping to see its favorite toy fly up in the air in a mixture of blood and dismembered body parts, but there was nothing. It looked down at its club and there was no body underneath it either.

Derek could see his body moving, but he was not in control. He was only able to see through his own eyes. Just before the club had landed on him, he took off from the spot

Derek could barely follow the movements of his own body, it was too fast, he was quickly on the other end of the area. He could clearly see the Ogre searching for him.

This Ogre had just tried to kill him; it was all Davidos' fault. If he hadn't been so stuck up they might have noticed when the Ogre appeared.

Derek was angry at the Ogre, he was angry at Davido, he was angry at the world. Why did hit have to be like this? After everything, he always ended up being the victim.

He couldn't contain his rage anymore; he willed his body to eliminate the Ogre. In his anger, his body moved willingly at an alarming speed, in a second he was beside the beast.

A slash of his hand severed the hand holding the club from his body. Then, jumping to such an unrealistic height, the next slash of his hand sliced the head of the Ogre clean from its body.

As Derek landed on the floor, his anger slowly dissipating, he wondered how he had managed to slice the head of the beast so cleanly with his fist. So he willed his hands to come up to his face.

The only expression on his face was one of shock. He could see what looked like claws on his hands slowly retracting and returning to normal, he also looked hairier than normal.

Then he heard the strange voice in his head again

[Beast has been successfully eliminated]

[+20 exp gained]

[New skill point gained]

[Title unlocked…]

What Derek found the weirdest was that as the voice rambled on in his head, numbers were appearing on a screen like front in his vision. This can only be a dream, Derek thought as the voice rambled on and different digits continued to appear on the screen.

'This has to be a dream' that was the last though on Derek's mind as he passed out

***

Derek woke up in a white room, everything about the room was white, the curtains, the bed, the bedspread, the tiles even the ceiling. He could see a figure clad in white garment walking around.

"Is this what heaven looks like" Derek muttered to himself, "is she an angel?" he asked no one in particular as he glanced at the female figure in white, moving around flawlessly.

Derek turned his head to the other side, there was a white almost transparent curtain obstructing his view. He stretched his hand out and pulled the curtain aside.

He saw Chuck sleeping soundly 'Did this chatterbox also make it to heaven?' Derek asked himself

When he sat up, the scene instantly snapped him out of his reverie. He could see white towels, a cabinet and a row of beds. This was definitely a clinic

The slight rustle of the mackintosh beneath the sheets had drawn Emily's attention to his bed

"You are finally awake" she said. Derek peered into the eyes of the nurse, that was the last thing he expected to hear. He vividly remembered his last moments

The Ogre had broken all the bones in his body and finished him off with a final swing of its club. He was quite sure he was supposed to be dead not awake.

"Do you remember what happened?" Emily asked him

"We, were—we" Derek stuttered, trying to piece his memories together

"Take it easy. You don't have to go all at once, take your time" she chided him. Emily remembered the Headmaster's instructions.

After the reports from Zayn and the homeroom teachers for the first years, the Headmaster was anxious to know what had happened.

The son of one the parents who had donated a lot of funds to the school and who happened to be a prestigious figure in the society was also involved in this incident

And the only people who had any answer to the questions were knocked unconscious or badly injured to have seen what had happened.

But Emily was not going to push the students who had barely recovered because the Headmaster wanted to satisfy just one parent when many others were injured.

She helped Derek into a sitting position, not that he actually needed the help. Then she handed him a cup of water. Derek swiftly emptied the contents of the cup and asked for another.

When he had sated his thirst with three full cups of water while Emily watched with surprise, he finally set the cup down and turned to face the nurse

"Our team had just defeated three beasts, then suddenly something landed in our midst, as if out of nowhere. The impact erupted the ground and sent everyone flying. Then-" Derek paused

"Then what" Emily asked in her smooth coaxing voice

The light feeling in Derek's body made him pause, he was battered by the beast but he didn't feel any pain. He had been very sure he had a lot of broken bones in his body. Yet his hands moved so easily, he couldn't feel any pains.

The image began to play back in his head, him watching himself from his eyes and not having any control of his body, the unreal speed and strength he had displayed

He had easily taken care of the beast and he was just a first year, an ordinary low ranked Level one without any abilities.

Derek remembered seeing a book somewhere that documented that the Ogre was a Level three beast, and he was at the lowest point of Level one.

No one would believe him and even if they did, they would begin to ask questions. That was why he began to ponder if it was such a good idea to tell Emily what had happened.

"That was the last thing I remember" Derek concluded.

"Okay, thanks for the help" she patted him on the back and walked to the door of the clinic.

Emily couldn't help but ponder, when the other students were brought in, they had either a bruise or a slight fracture or both. Except Derek, he was completely fine just unconscious.

She wondered if it was just sheer luck or something else had happened. She hoped someone would wake up and encounter the whole story since Derek's was not complete.

When she got to the door, Emily shut the door behind her

"You are sure, you were the first person on the scene?" Derek could hear Emily ask

"I'm quite sure, there was no other person there. As soon as I got the message I rushed there as quickly as I could" Emily believed him because in the entire school there was no one as fast as him

"Zayn?" Derek said to himself. Derek's heart began to beat faster, Zayn was outside the clinic talking with Emily there was absolutely nothing wrong with that.

But the problem was that they were almost fifty feet away from him and he could hear them clearly like they were actually standing in his front.

Derek put his hand over his ears and clamped them shut, but he could still hear the words filter into his ears. There was really something wrong with him.

"Someone else had killed the beast before I got there, those are just first year students. None of them are strong enough to handle a beast from a level three gate" he heard Zayn explain to Emily.

His heart started to beat even faster, 'there's no way they can find out it was me, right? Yes. No way' Derek said, trying to convince himself.

He was totally immersed in the conversation outside that he nearly jumped out of his skin when he heard a loud grunt beside him.

His hearing sense was still heightened, the grunt had sounded much louder than it actually was, Derek put one hand on the edge of the bed, ready to vault over and sprint out of the room.
