Chapter 3 - The Mad Scientist And His Neptune Trident

"So out of all the individuals you could've brought, it just had to be a lavish intellectual," a woman's voice sounded exasperated. "Honestly, Niko, what were you thinking?" she muttered under her breath.

"I agree with you, Sydney, but we must respect Niko's decision. After all, he's the one who brought us here," a boy of around 17 years old chimed in. "Besides, Mercury gave his approval," he added.

"I place my trust in Niko. There's no need for us to use our code names. He's one of us, and that's how it shall remain. My name is Nova Star," a younger boy, around 15 or 14 years old, announced. He extracted a beaker from a nearby shelf and carefully administered its contents into Jake's mouth. "That should expedite your recovery," Nova explained, returning the beaker to its designated place. "The tall girl, approximately 16 years old, is Sydney. And the other boy, that's Noah. Take the time to acquaint yourself with this place. Sydney, Noah, please extend a warm welcome to him," Nova continued.

With a cheerful smile, Nova left the room. However, as soon as he departed, his countenance transformed into one of wrathful rage. His eyes twitched, and his veins bulged, while his lengthy brown dreads twisted and writhed like a cyclone. "What in the world is Niko thinking?" Nova seethed, his thoughts consumed by fury. Filled with indignation, he stormed off, the echoes of his steps resonating with his inner turmoil.

"Was it Jake or Jack? Nevermind that. Here are two communicators," Sydney began, handing them over to Jake. "The larger one is your primary device, the one you should primarily use. However, if for any reason you are unable to utilize it, then you'll resort to the smaller one. It activates when a specific code is spoken, and we'll all receive your messages. Just remember, you'll need to recharge it, which in itself poses a predicament. Life at present feels akin to the Stone Age," Sydney explained. "Fortunately, we have Nova. His scientific knowledge surpasses that of any scientist I've encountered," Sydney continued.

"Thank you. I genuinely appreciate it," Jake expressed, his voice starting to crack with emotion.

"Are you still in pain? What's troubling you?" Sydney inquired, her concern evident.

"I... I don't know. I just... I don't understand anymore. I spent nearly four years serving in the military, and the two years prior were dedicated to preparing myself for it. And then, I was cast aside. But now, you all... you're just so... kind," Jake struggled to articulate his thoughts.

"That's enough. I don't care about your intricate backstory. Your condition is improving, and that's all that matters," Sydney interrupted, her tone firm yet compassionate, offering reassurance to Jake in his vulnerable state.

In the midst of a macabre demon worship procession, Niko observed the crowd from a distance, his senses inexplicably attuned to a faint presence. Each member of the congregation stood bare, devoid of clothing, their bodies adorned with intricate tribal markings that exuded an otherworldly essence. These markings spanned their entire forms, obscuring any trace of their original skin color. Niko, his raven-black hair roughly tied into a bun, cautiously advanced toward a pillar situated closer to the parade, yet maintaining a safe distance. As he drew nearer, his discerning gaze fell upon a figure who appeared to hold a position of leadership. With untamed tresses cascading down her back, an embryonic horn sprouted from her forehead, setting her apart from the others. Unlike their white markings, hers bore a deep crimson hue. Moreover, her teeth possessed an abhorrent resemblance to those of repulsive demons.

The congregation erupted into an uproarious display of dance and song, the rhythmic movements intertwined with their twisted devotion. Just as Niko contemplated retreating to relay the gathered intelligence, an unexpected occurrence transpired—the entire assembly abruptly ceased in unison. It was as if time itself paused, granting the leader an opportunity to fixate her eyes directly upon Niko. A wicked chuckle escaped her lips, and then, she raised her hands, signaling her unholy disciples to charge toward Niko, eliciting a profound sense of fear within him. Unbeknownst to him, the looming danger pushed him to utter the code that would summon assistance: "666!" Nikolas shouted, his voice echoing through the chaos. A distinct beep followed, the signal of activation.

Confronted with the perilous choice of flight or confrontation, Niko's mind raced. The base lay a daunting 40 minutes away, and the prospect of combating approximately 200 fanatical worshippers appeared insurmountable. Yet, in this pivotal moment, Niko forged an unwavering resolve—a vow to single-handedly annihilate all 200 fervent devotees, including their malevolent leader, right here, right now.

Niko stood his ground as the horde of 200 demon worshippers charged towards him, their rusted spears and swords raised high. Gripping his axe tightly, he braced himself for the impending onslaught. The leader, a sinister figure with red markings and repulsive teeth, watched from a safe distance, eager to witness Niko's struggle.

As the worshippers closed in, Niko unleashed a primal battle cry and leaped into action. His axe sliced through the air, striking the first worshipper with brutal force. Blood sprayed as the worshipper fell, but there was no time to revel in the victory. More enemies surged forward, hungry for his demise.

Niko spun and twirled, using the weight of his axe to his advantage. With each swing, he cleaved through flesh and bone, leaving a trail of devastation in his wake. His movements were a dance of calculated violence, a symphony of death. He seamlessly transitioned between axe and dagger, exploiting any opening with ruthless efficiency.

A worshipper lunged at Niko with a rusted spear, aiming for his chest. In a lightning-fast reflex, he sidestepped the attack, causing the spear to whiz past him. With a swift countermove, Niko swung his axe upward, slicing through the worshipper's abdomen. The force of the blow sent the worshipper sprawling to the ground, gasping for breath.

A group of worshippers closed in on Niko, their swords slashing through the air. He deflected their strikes with precise parries, his dagger serving as a deadly extension of his arm. With each well-placed stab and slash, he incapacitated his foes, disarming them one by one.

Amidst the chaos, Niko's axe left his hand momentarily, sailing through the air in a deadly arc. It struck a worshipper with unerring accuracy, sending them collapsing to the ground. Without missing a beat, Niko swiftly retrieved his axe, snatching it from the fallen body, ready to continue the onslaught.

The worshippers fought with desperate ferocity, their numbers seemingly endless. They swarmed around Niko, slashing and thrusting their weapons with reckless abandon. But Niko remained undeterred, his movements a symphony of evasion and counterattacks.

A worshipper lunged from behind, attempting to grapple Niko. In a swift maneuver, he twisted his body and delivered a powerful kick, sending the worshipper sprawling backward. With a decisive strike of his axe, he ended their existence.

Blood spattered his face, his body a canvas of cuts and bruises, but Niko pressed on. He fought with a relentless resolve, fuelled by an indomitable spirit. One by one, the worshippers fell before him, their bodies lifeless and broken.

The leader, observing the massacre from afar, watched in disbelief as Niko stood victorious amidst the sea of fallen foes. Breathing heavily, he cast a piercing gaze towards her, a silent challenge in his eyes. Though she stayed to watch.

As the final worshipper fell to the ground, silence settled upon the battleground. The air hung heavy with the stench of blood and the echoes of the clash. Niko's grip tightened on his bloodstained axe, his body trembling with exhaustion and adrenaline. He had triumphed against insurmountable odds, emerging as the lone survivor of a merciless battle.

He stood amidst the carnage, his chest heaving with each laboured breath. The weight of his victory bore down on him, mingling with the pain and exhaustion. But as he surveyed the battlefield strewn with fallen worshippers, a sense of grim satisfaction washed over him. He had faced their relentless onslaught and emerged as the victor.

"Are you prepared to be vanquished?" Nikolas wheezed, his voice strained by ragged coughs and gasps for air. Beads of sweat trickled down his dirt-streaked face, mingling with the blood that stained his torn garments. His body trembled with exhaustion, yet his eyes burned with a defiant determination.

Nikolas stood amidst the aftermath of the grueling battle, his body battered and his spirit weary. The leader, having witnessed his triumph against the horde of worshippers, stepped forward, a wicked smile curling upon her twisted lips. She emanated an aura of dark power, her eyes gleaming with malevolence.

With a flick of her wrist, the leader conjured small flames in her hands, orbs of fiery energy crackling with ominous intent. She unleashed a barrage of ranged fire attacks, hurling them towards Nikolas with pinpoint accuracy. Each fiery projectile exploded upon impact, sending waves of searing heat rippling through the air.

Nikolas, caught off guard by the sudden assault, attempted to dodge the onslaught. He rolled and weaved, narrowly avoiding the fiery projectiles that consumed the ground around him. But the leader's control over fire was precise, and her attacks followed his every movement.

The scorching flames singed Nikolas' skin, leaving trails of agony in their wake. He fought against the searing pain, his determination unyielding. Realizing that evading alone wouldn't be enough, he mustered his strength and lunged forward, wielding his axe and dagger with renewed ferocity.

But the leader was swift and elusive, effortlessly dodging his strikes while retaliating with her relentless fire assaults. She danced around him, her movements a macabre ballet of destruction. The air crackled with tension as their clash intensified, sparks of fire illuminating the darkened battlefield.

Gradually, the relentless onslaught took its toll on Nikolas. His movements grew sluggish, his limbs heavy with fatigue. The leader, sensing his weakening resolve, seized the opportunity. She unleashed a final barrage of fire, engulfing him in a blazing inferno.

Struggling to stay upright amidst the flames, Nikolas fought against the searing pain that enveloped him. But his strength waned, and he collapsed to his knees, his body charred and his spirit on the verge of surrender.

The leader approached, her eyes gleaming with sadistic delight. She looked down upon Nikolas, his battered form lying defenseless before her. With a malevolent grin, she leaned closer, her fangs bared.

"You are... worthy," she hissed in an ancient, ominous language, her voice a haunting echo in the air. Without hesitation, she sank her teeth deep into Nikolas' flesh, her venom coursing through his veins.

As darkness closed in around him, Nikolas felt his consciousness slipping away. The excruciating pain merged with a strange euphoria, his fate intertwined with the very forces he had fought against.

And then, a sudden cloud of smoke appeared. After it began to disappear, It was clear than Nova and Sydney had began to aid Nikolas.

Nova and Sydney fought with unwavering determination, their every move a testament to their unyielding spirit. They pressed on, pushing their bodies to the limits, their minds focused on the daunting task at hand.

As the leader unleashed a relentless assault, Sydney skillfully parried her blows, her shield absorbing the brunt of the attacks. But in a moment of miscalculation, the leader delivered a devastating punch that caught Sydney off guard. The impact sent her flying through the air, crashing against a nearby wall. The force of the blow knocked the wind out of her, leaving her momentarily dazed and defenseless.

Nova's heart raced with concern as he witnessed Sydney's fall. Adrenaline surged through his veins, fueling his determination to protect his fallen comrade. Without hesitation, he launched himself at the leader, channeling his fury into a relentless onslaught of strikes and kicks.

His attacks came with lightning speed, each blow infused with the weight of his burning determination. But the leader, resilient and empowered by her dark forces, proved to be a formidable adversary. She retaliated with a vicious flurry of strikes, her movements infused with malevolent energy.

In a desperate bid to turn the tide, Nova reached into his bag of potions, his hands trembling with urgency. With meticulous precision, he uncorked a vial and hurled it towards the leader. The vial exploded, releasing a volatile concoction that engulfed the area in a blinding burst of flames. The leader stumbled, momentarily disoriented by the chaos.

Seizing the opportunity, Nova closed the distance between them, his movements fluid and calculated. He unleashed a series of lightning-fast strikes, his fists and feet connecting with unyielding force. Judo moves were seamlessly incorporated into his onslaught, allowing him to swiftly bring the leader to the ground.

But the leader's resolve remained unbroken. With a surge of dark energy, she rose to her feet, her eyes ablaze with malevolence. She retaliated with a barrage of fire attacks, forcing Nova to weave and dodge, his body covered in a sheen of sweat and determination.

The battle raged on, Nova's body battered and burnt, his spirit undeterred. Every blow he landed was met with an equally fierce counterattack from the leader. Despite the pain and exhaustion, he pressed on, his movements fueled by his unwavering determination to protect Sydney and overcome this formidable foe.

As the fight reached its zenith, Nova summoned every ounce of strength within him. With a final burst of energy, he executed a series of devastating takedowns, grappling the leader to the ground. The sound of bones cracking echoed through the air as he forced her into submission.

Victory seemed within their grasp, but the leader's dark power surged anew. A surge of flames engulfed her body, scorching the air around her. In a burst of energy, she broke free from Nova's grip, her eyes burning with a sinister light.

Nova's body was covered in burns, his skin blistered and raw. He staggered backward, his strength waning. The leader stood before him, her power seemingly boundless. But even in the face of despair, Nova refused to yield.

Summoning his last reserves of strength, Nova launched himself at the leader once more. His movements became a symphony of martial arts, his kicks and punches landing with precise accuracy. Each strike carried the weight of his exhaustion, his burning determination never faltering.

With one final, well-placed strike, Nova brought the leader to her knees. The air hung heavy with anticipation as he stood over her, his body trembling with exhaustion and pain. The leader's fiery gaze met his, a mix of defiance and admiration in her eyes.

"You're.... just like...." The leader said, before crumbling to ashes.
