Chapter 4 - An Incurable Plague

"He's still not awake..." Nova's voice trembled, the words barely escaping his quivering lips. The room fell into a chilling silence as his words hung in the air, the weight of his revelation settling upon the group like a suffocating fog. The atmosphere turned palpably sinister, as if the very walls of the room were closing in, imprisoning them within a nightmare.

"I've never witnessed such a dreadful sight," Nova continued, his voice filled with a mix of terror and disbelief. "His comatose state... it's beyond comprehension. His skin, once full of life, has lost its warmth and colour. It's as if his life is slowly being drained..."

Noah's eyes widened in horror, his breath catching in his throat. "How can this be happening? This... this is like a waking nightmare," he stammered, his voice trembling with a blend of fear and sorrow.

"Rare enough to be called Niko Disease," Nova whispered, his words hauntingly piercing the silence. The group shuddered, their hearts sinking into a bottomless pit of despair. Sydney's eyes filled with tears, her body trembling as she struggled to comprehend the sheer magnitude of their predicament. Jake, his face drained of all colour, stumbled backward, his hands trembling uncontrollably.

In an outburst of anguish, Sydney cried out, her voice laced with pain and frustration. "Dammit! We fought so hard, defeated the evil that possessed him, and now... this! We must reach out to our allies, regardless of their past transgressions. We need their knowledge, their expertise, even if it comes at a price. We cannot face this horror alone."

A heavy silence engulfed the room, broken only by the sound of stifled sobs and the collective weight of their despair. Their eyes remained fixed on Niko, lying motionless in the hospital bed, his life force slipping away like sand through their fingers. Every fibre of their being screamed in anguish, their hearts torn apart by the unimaginable nightmare that had befallen their dearest friend.

Tears streamed down their faces, mixing with the anguish that gripped their souls. The horrifying reality settled deep within them, a chilling reminder that even in the face of victory, darkness could still claw its way back, consuming everything they held dear.

"The only silver lining is its noncontagious nature," Nova murmured, his attempt to find solace hindered by an overwhelming sense of helplessness.

"I am resolved to undertake this endeavour, for the sake of saving Niko. We are left with no alternative but to seek aid from our allies. Noah and Nova, remain by Niko's side. Should we all embark, he would be exposed to grave peril. And if his condition were to further deteriorate... we are well aware of the grim consequences. Jake, you shall accompany me," Sydney asserted.

Jake, his voice tinged with concern, hesitated before speaking. "Are you certain about this? I do not wish to impede your progress or burden you."

"If there were another suitable candidate, I would have chosen them," Sydney reassured him, her gaze conveying a blend of determination and empathy. "We must traverse the fortified military border, and your recent brush with death, a mere three weeks past, renders you knowledgeable about potential crossing routes. Believe in your abilities, Jake. Despite your youth, you possess the acumen of an experienced individual. Perchance it is the consequence of a life steeped in privilege that instills doubt. Rest assured, you are capable of far more than you perceive."

With resolute determination, they commenced the meticulous packing of essential provisions. Freshly harvested sustenance, spare armaments, and various tools, including binoculars, were meticulously organized. The weight of their mission hung palpably in the air as they readied themselves for the arduous journey that lay ahead.

In silence, they departed, leaving behind an oppressive stillness that echoed the collective fear and determination within their hearts. Their path remained obscured by uncertainty, their spirits burdened by the knowledge that each step brought them closer to the unfathomable horrors that awaited. Yet, undeterred by adversity, they pressed onward, their unyielding resolve guiding them through the encroaching darkness that threatened to engulf them all.

"With their departure, I surmise that Niko possesses a modicum of consciousness. Not in the conventional sense, but rather an awareness of his surroundings. It evokes memories of a bygone era, when we indulged in viewing poignant accounts of human suffering in the world as it once was," Nova mused.

"Do you truly believe that Niko can perceive our presence?" Noah inquired, seeking validation.

"Indeed, and that realization only intensifies our obligation to aid him," Nova responded, his voice tinged with a delicate restraint as he fought back tears. "Imagine the agony he endures, immobile and imprisoned within his own body, his eyelids held captive. Yet, in his feeble awakening, he possesses a faint semblance of awareness, privy to the fragments of our existence."

The weight of their collective anguish bore down upon them, culminating in an outpouring of emotion. Noah's voice cracked as he unleashed his impassioned declaration, punctuated by the desperate pounding of his hands upon Niko's desk.

"By the heavens, Nikola! I solemnly vow to you! We are but a solitary year away from the culmination of the divine rapture, the ascent to heavenly realms! Should you endure this fleeting year, you... you shall attain the sanctity of paradise. You have been a beacon of altruism, extending your benevolence even to those more fortunate than yourself. You shielded a stranger with your own corporeal vessel... You embarked on relentless campaigns against malevolent entities, safeguarding the innocent from their wretched grasp. Night after night, you remained steadfast in your devotion, offering prayers when our faith in God had all but waned."

Noah's fervent entreaty reverberated within the chamber, a poignant testament to his anguish and unwavering devotion.

Jake and Sydney cautiously approached the military border, their senses heightened, attuned to the slightest signs of danger. The moonlight bathed the landscape in an ethereal glow, casting long, haunting shadows across the rugged terrain. The air hung heavy with anticipation as they neared the threshold of uncertainty.

As they drew closer, their hearts pounded in their chests, their every breath a reminder of the risks they were about to undertake. The soldiers patrolling the area appeared as formidable figures, their presence a stark reminder of the authority they held. Clad in impeccably pressed uniforms, each soldier stood tall and resolute, their eyes sharp and unwavering.

The first soldier, Sergeant Markus, was a towering figure with a rugged demeanor. His broad shoulders were adorned with numerous military medals, a testament to his experience and skill. His weathered face bore the scars of battles fought, etched into his skin like a map of his turbulent past. His eyes, piercing and steely, surveyed the surroundings with unwavering focus.

Private Rodriguez, the second soldier, stood with a lean and athletic build. His movements were swift and calculated, his eyes darting from shadow to shadow. His dark complexion blended seamlessly with the night, making him a formidable adversary. A sense of alertness emanated from him, an indication of his training and readiness for any threat.

The third soldier, Corporal Reynolds, was of average stature but exuded a quiet confidence. His clean-shaven face carried a look of determination, his eyes sharp and observant. His disciplined posture and the way he carried himself hinted at his unwavering loyalty to his duty. His every movement was precise, a testament to his meticulous training.

Jake and Sydney exchanged a knowing glance, wordlessly communicating their intent. With silent agreement, they prepared to engage their adversaries. Their hearts thumped in their chests as adrenaline surged through their veins, heightening their senses.

Jake, with his towering frame and sinewy muscles, took the lead, his steps steady and purposeful. His movements were reminiscent of a predator closing in on its prey. He circled around Sergeant Markus, his eyes locked onto his opponent, analyzing his every move. Jake's fists clenched, calloused and battle-hardened, ready to unleash a torrent of force.

With a swift and powerful strike, Jake launched himself at Sergeant Markus. His fist, like a thunderous hammer, connected with Markus' jaw, sending shockwaves through the soldier's body. The impact reverberated in the still night air as Markus stumbled backward, momentarily disoriented.

Meanwhile, Sydney, nimble and agile, swiftly approached Private Rodriguez. Her eyes locked onto her target, calculating his weaknesses. With lightning reflexes, she ducked beneath Rodriguez's attempted strike, swiftly countering with a flurry of precise kicks and punches. Her movements were a dance of grace and lethal intent, her strikes finding their mark with unerring accuracy.

The clash of bodies echoed through the night as Jake and Sergeant Markus engaged in a fierce hand-to-hand combat. Markus, with his years of military training, retaliated with a barrage of punches and kicks, his movements fueled by years of discipline. Jake deftly parried each blow, his muscles flexing with each defense.

The fight between Sydney and Private Rodriguez intensified, their bodies intertwining in a blur of motion. Sydney's acrobatic prowess allowed her to evade Rodriguez's strikes with cat-like agility, her body twisting and turning with precision. She delivered swift and calculated counterattacks, exploiting her opponent's vulnerabilities.

Corporal Reynolds, witnessing his comrades engaged in combat, surged forward with determination. He lunged at Sydney, seeking to disrupt her focus and provide an advantage to his allies. Sydney, aware of his presence, pivoted with a swift kick, momentarily incapacitating Reynolds and buying herself a crucial moment.

Jake, locked in a struggle with Sergeant Markus, unleashed a devastating blow, a culmination of raw power and pent-up determination. His fist collided with Markus' abdomen, the impact driving the air from the soldier's lungs. Markus staggered backward, momentarily weakened by the force of the blow.

As the fight ensued, the soldiers fought back with a mixture of surprise and desperation. Their training enabled them to mount a formidable defense, parrying and countering the relentless assaults of Jake and Sydney. Each soldier, in their own way, exhibited a unique fighting style, honed through countless hours of training.

The battlefield was alive with the sounds of battle—a symphony of grunts, the clashing of fists, and the crackling energy of combat. The moonlight revealed the sweat-drenched brows of the combatants, their muscles straining with effort. Adrenaline coursed through their veins, heightening their reflexes and fueling their resolve.

Jake, his face etched with determination, pressed forward, unyielding in his pursuit of victory. He anticipated each move of his opponents, countering with precise strikes and powerful blows. His fists, like pistons of fury, crashed against the soldiers' defenses, threatening to shatter their resolve.

Sydney, agile and focused, weaved through the chaos, her movements fluid and precise. Her martial prowess shone through her every strike, a testament to her relentless training and unwavering determination. She exploited openings in the soldiers' defenses, delivering calculated blows that left them reeling.

The battle raged on, the clash of wills echoing through the desolate landscape. Sweat mingled with the dirt on the soldiers' brows, their breaths labored but unyielding. The moon bore witness to their struggle, casting an eerie glow upon the scene of violence and determination.

Finally, after a relentless exchange of blows, the soldiers began to falter. Jake's powerful strikes wore down Sergeant Markus, his blows finding vulnerable spots with increasing accuracy. With one final, thunderous punch, Markus collapsed to the ground, defeated and breathless.

Sydney, her movements as swift as the wind, outmaneuvered Private Rodriguez, her strikes raining down upon him like a storm. Each blow found its mark, weakening Rodriguez's defenses. With a swift kick, she sent him sprawling to the ground, his strength waning.

Corporal Reynolds, the last remaining adversary, stood with determination, his gaze fixed on Jake and Sydney. He knew the odds were against him, but his loyalty to his comrades burned bright. In one last act of defiance, he lunged forward, his attack fueled by desperation.

Sydney, her senses heightened, anticipated Reynolds' move. With a quick sidestep, she evaded his strike, leaving him vulnerable and off-balance. Jake, seizing the opportunity, delivered a powerful blow to Reynolds' midsection, his fist connecting with bone-crushing force.

As Corporal Reynolds fell to the ground, defeated and gasping for breath, the battlefield fell silent. The soldiers lay motionless, their presence a testament to the treacherous nature of the encounter. Jake and Sydney took a moment to catch their breath, their bodies slick with perspiration, their senses heightened.

Aware of the fleeting nature of their triumph, they swiftly gathered their belongings and erased any traces of their presence. Each movement was deliberate, meticulous, as they prepared to continue their perilous mission. The border had been breached, but the path ahead remained treacherous.

As they disappeared into the night, shadows swallowed them whole, concealing their presence once more. Their eyes were fixed on the distant horizon, where the mountains awaited, their imposing peaks shrouded in mystery.
