[Let there be embers] A giant puff of flames lit up the room, illuminating the dark room. In a flash, the wooden walls seemingly screamed back at the fireball. A singular lightbulb swayed back and forth as it hung above the two of them. "Ah!" Nana exclaims in surprise as she drops her wand, the fireball burning the lethal weapon to a crisp.
"Nana!" A masculine voice coughed in pain as he waved the smoke away from his face. His long, slender fingers pushed against the smoke particles, allowing him to breathe non-soot-filled air.
"I'm so sorry, Leo!" Nana looks at her hands; long striations of burnt skin line her palms and fingers. "The fireball just exploded in my face! I couldn't see anything!" Nana frantically tried to explain herself.
"Ugh." Leo sighs in distaste and disappointment. [Let there be gale] From the tip of Leo's finger, a burst of cold blades of wind entered the air. The sharp but wide blades cut through the smoke like a hot knife through butter, effortlessly clearing the smoke and allowing them to regain their sight. "For the last time..." Leo gritted his teeth in dismay as veins popped from his temples.
"I'm sorry!" Nana wailed loudly as tears streamed down the sides of her face. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" Nana put her hands together and started to plead for forgiveness. Her once golden blonde hair has now turned a sooty grey.
Leo saw the look of grief on her face and decided not to press any harder on the matter. "It's fine." Leo turned and looked away from Nana's admittedly cute puppy eyes. A singular bead of sweat dripped down the sides of his rich, dark-skinned neck, only accented by his almond freckles. With curly black hair and long lashes, you could mistake this fine gentleman for a woman.
Nana removed the tears from her eyes and stood up, revealing her mountainous height. She stood nearly a whole head taller than Leo. "I'm forgiven, right?" Nana's frown turned into a smile immediately as she heard the words 'It's fine, which merely left the tip of Leo's tongue.
"At this rate, you're going to fail, Nana." Leo rolled up the sleeves of his uniform. A white button-up shirt with a black coat and a red sash strung across his shoulders, which lay low on his waist. He wore fully black pants, the golden chain of a miniature clock being the only pop of colour visible on his body. However, he wore a golden necklace with a green jewel embezzled onto a flat piece of gold that hung messily around his collar.
"Nuh uh!" Nana pouted her cheeks and crossed her arms, showing off her natural blush and flawless skin. Unlike Leo, who had wrinkles on his forehead from the stress of having to stand up to Nana every day, Nana's skin was flawless. Not a single wrinkle or crease in sight. Her blush was always on point—never overwhelming, but always noticeable. She wore a robe with pants in the same palette as Leo's, their uniforms looking mighty alike. On the inner side of her robe was a silk lining that had moons embroidered on it. "I'll pass it with flying colours." You can trust me." Nana puffed her chest in confidence.
"I'm being serious here, Nana. The Sorcerer Entrance Exams are no joke; they only come around every 2 years. Year threes and fours only have one shot." Leo put his middle finger behind his thumb, pointing it at Nana's forehead. "We are year fours. Which means we've had one extra year of preparation. Which also means the test is one extra year harder." Leo flicked Nana on the forehead.
"Ow!" Nana tilted her head down. "But I am confident. I am confident that I'll be able to pass." Nana tilts her head back up and smiles at Leo with a wide grin.
"If you say so." Leo snaps his fingers, and a blur of purple goes across his eyes, summoning purple glasses. However, the glasses were slightly tilted. "You have three days until the exam, Nana." Leo adjusts the glasses. "I don't expect you to become Merlin in three days."
"Well, Amberlain wasn't built in a day—or three days in this case." Nana raises her finger and points out Leo.
"Amberlain collapsed when the workers that worked on it rushed through the project, overlooking several important steps. And that still took three years to build." Leo corrects Nana. "I'm sorry, Nana. It's too late to start now." Leo sighs in disappointment.
"Oh," Nana says in a softer tone, her mouth barely opening to let the words squeeze out between her lips. "But then I'll graduate without a permit." Nana looks back down at her scorned hands; blood was starting to seep out from the open wound.
"You can always get it after you graduate." Leo places his hands on top of Nana's, casting a healing spell. A green aura surrounds both of their hands as the wound on Nana's hand slowly closes up, the blood seeping back into the wound. "But who knows?" Leo laughs awkwardly. "Maybe you can pass, and you'll get your permit."
Nana doesn't say anything, instead opting to swallow her own spit. Leo removes his hands from Nana, revealing her hands to be completely healed. Not a single scar in sight. "You're amazing, Leo." Nana says as she breathes out of her mouth, almost a snicker. "I have no doubts about you passing the exam and getting your permit."
"Me neither." Leo smiles as he pats Nana on the head, smooth golden strands getting in between his fingers as he brushes the soot off. "Your class starts twenty minutes from now. I wouldn't miss Mr. Yaeger's class for anything; I'd rather be chewed by a Cerberus than miss his class." Leo turns around and starts walking away from Nana. "Same time tomorrow?" He turns his head back slightly, showing only his mouth to her.
"Same time tomorrow." Nana smiles as Leo opens the door in front of him, pulling down on the handle. Leo walks out of the room and closes the door behind him. "Three days?" Nana looks back down at her hand, which Leo had healed. It was absolutely perfect. The way he handled magic was like no other; it almost felt like second nature to him. It was as if he was born with talent.
