This story takes place in a place where newspapers are the only means of news getting around, phones can only be used to send texts, face calls and voice calls to other people. Most Cars are electric, and self-driving with AI while the rest are manually operated with gas.
To prevent cheating in car racing, manual gas cars are driven by the pros. Special manual gas cars are quite expensive.
