Chapter 26 - The witch's visit (1)

The next day, Kalen woke up in his room and lay there listening to faint sounds coming from the living room.

'It can't be, can it...?'

He got up and walked to the living room, peeking through the door to see Adaire lying on the couch with food scraps all over the floor and table.

The blinds were closed, and the TV was still on. Kalen pressed a button on the wall and the blinds began to open slowly.

Adaire closed her eyes in annoyance and tried to block the light with her small hands.

"Ahh! No, close them!"

A few moments later the blinds opened fully, illuminating the entire living room and part of the kitchen.

Adaire covered her face with a pillow and Kalen could only sigh as she walked into the kitchen.

'Is she really that powerful?'

At first glance, Adaire just looked like a ten-year-old girl who had stayed up late watching her favorite TV show. Not an extremely powerful being who could wipe out entire cities... it's not like Kalen knew if Adaire could do anything like that.

"Hey, I told you to close it!"

Kalen opened the fridge and took out a synthetic orange juice and poured it into two different glasses.

"It's almost half a day, you know? Besides, I don't know why you're still in my house"

Adaire removed the pillow from her face and looked at Kalen with annoyance.

"I'm on holiday... and I don't have anywhere else to stay... it's not like I need it. Anyway! You'll be working for me, so you should get used to my presence"

Kalen took both glasses and came into the room.

'That's what worries me'

Kalen didn't know how to take care of a person... let alone someone as unpredictable as Adaire.

He handed her the glass of orange juice, which Adaire took and sniffed.

"What is this?"

Kalen drank some of the juice and swallowed, savoring the taste.

"Orange juice"

Adaire frowned slightly.

"It smells fake"

Without further delay, he took a sip of the juice and a grimace appeared on his delicate face.

"Yuck...gross. There's nothing orange about it"

Kalen just shrugged and finished his juice. He had never tasted natural orange juice before, so he couldn't compare the two flavors. As before, the two had different standards.

Looking at the mess that was his living room, Kalen sighed and decided to clean it up later. He didn't feel like picking up all the rubbish right now, and he had things to do.

Kalen went to take a bath and when he got out of the shower, he saw that Adaire was still watching the show. Without giving it much importance, he got ready to leave. When he was outside the door, Adaire looked at him.

"Where are you going?"

Kalen took his house keys and looked back at her.

"Outside...?"

He didn't specify where he was going, not that he owed her any explanations. Instead, Adaire cocked his head to one side.

"You can't. You'll be my guide today"

Kalen frowned, but before he could speak, Adaire rose from the couch and approached him.

"Whatever you want to do, you can do later, now come with me"

Before Kalen could say anything, Adaire raised her hand, and several things began to happen.

All the rubbish in the room began to disappear as if it had never existed. It was as if they simply ceased to exist from one moment to the next.

Kalen didn't understand how Adaire was doing it, but it was clear that it had something to do with her power.

Suddenly, the glass doors to the balcony opened, filling the apartment with a light breeze, and from one moment to the next, all Kalen could feel was the air around him.

'…What the hell?'

Without realizing it, Adaire had grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, and she jumped off the balcony, falling into free fall.

Kalen could barely open his eyes from the wind whipping against him. But just as they were about to hit the ground, Adaire opened his hand and pointed at the floor.

An invisible energy began to slow his fall and soon his feet touched the ground.

Adaire let go of Kalen, who could only catch his breath as he sat on the ground with his heart pounding.

Kalen looked at Adaire, who was looking around curiously, and couldn't help but get angry.

"Are you crazy!?"

Adaire looked at him and tilted her head gently.

"Why?"

Kalen stood up abruptly.

"Why!? You just jumped from the 13th floor! Can't you use the elevator like a normal person!?"

Adaire looked at him as if Kalen was talking nonsense.

"That thing that goes up and down in buildings? It's too slow... too boring. It's much better and easier to jump!"

Kalen didn't know what to say. He didn't know what Urasis was like, but if everyone was like Adaire, then he was in danger just by setting foot in that world.

'...Please don't''

Suddenly, Adaire started walking in one direction without warning, and as much as he wanted to avoid following her, Kalen was forced to walk behind the girl.

'Ugh... I just hope it'll be different when we get back to Urasis. I'm not going to bear another year like this'

In a completely different office than before, Corinna rested her jaw on her hands as she looked at more than 10 different screens at once.

Two people were reflected on the screens from different angles. All available cameras in the nearby streets were focused on Kalen and Adaire as they walked.

Next to Corinna, the hooded woman from earlier, named Charline, held some papers, and also watched in silence.

"Is it okay for us to watch them like this?"

Corinna continued to look at the screens.

"It's the only way we can do it. Any agent we send in will be detected immediately, so our only option is to use the technology and pray that Adaire doesn't notice"

Charline didn't know what to say, just a sour expression behind her black mask.

"What if Nox tells her that we're watching her? He knows we're watching them"

Corinna shook her head.

"He's smart, he's already felt the terror of Adaire's power, he won't dare do anything to her that will upset her... I hope"

Corinna knew that Kalen might be intelligent at times, but not always. What she didn't know was that he had upset Adaire already several times before.

Only Adaire had let it pass because he didn't see it as a direct insult.

"That aside... What's up with the fire pillar?"

Charline handed Corinna the papers she had with her and began to explain as Corinna read them.

"He's been quiet lately, and his son has been missing for a little over a month"

Corinna frowned.

"That's about as long as Nox"

Charline nodded.

"Yes, ma'am... although the exact date is not known, it fits almost perfectly"

Corinna put the papers down on the table and rubbed her forehead wearily.

"Don't you think it's too much of a coincidence? I can only hope that Nox had nothing to do with his son's death"

She glanced back at the screen where Adaire could be seen entering a shop, Kalen following her with stress.

"We can't hide anything from him... not yet. Not if we don't want to start a civil war that will destroy what's left of the world"

Charline looked at her boss with some concern.

"Is his son's life that important to him?"

Corinna scoffed and rested her head on her hand.

"His children? That son of a bitch of Aston couldn't care less about any son. He just wants to find a good excuse to attack us"

Charline looked at the screens.

"But that would alert the wind pillar and force it to act"

Corinna nodded.

"And that would lead to a civil war. We are cornered, attacked from the outside and the inside. No one is an ally, but everyone is an enemy"

Charline repeated the last sentence several times in her head. It was a famous phrase among people who usually travelled to Urasis, where there were many dangers. So, the phrase was there to remind them to stay alert.

Nevertheless, the death rate in Urasis was high. It was simply kept hidden from the masses so as not to alarm them.

The screens lost sight of the duo and suddenly their image changed, showing them dozens of kilometers away from where they were last.

Kalen tried to keep his balance and his breakfast inside his stomach while Adaire continued to look around curiously.

Corinna saw this and closed her eyes.

"If only we could count on the support of one of the Five Witches of the Abyss... then we shouldn't be so cautious"

In his mind's eye, an image of a younger Kalen appeared next to two people with blurred faces.

Corinna sighed and continued to watch the screens.

"I just hope you don't do anything crazy... Kalen"
