Chapter 2 - Interlude: The Oracle

Around six or seven centuries ago, when Varietin had just separated from the much larger Tamore Empire and emerged as a new kingdom, the first emperor, Rizzun, had been paid a visit by a young girl, no older than 11 years of age. She proclaimed to be the Oracle herself, and told the emperor she had grave news for him.

As one would expect, the emperor and his people brushed this off as a child spouting fairytale nonsense. However, the young girl did not relent. She insisted that what she had to say would prove to be very important for him and his empire. Amused, one of the councilors asked the girl for evidence of her claims.

Staring furiously up at the old man, the young girl declared that his oldest son, who was on his way back to the Capital, would encounter an unfortunate incident on the road. He'd then die, the girl said, at the hands of his own trusted footman. She was then ushered away, and while the councilor did not trust the girl's inane words, he could not help feeling anxious for his son's safety.

Lo and behold, three days later, disaster struck. The councilor received word from a messenger that his son had died on route from his summer house during a robbery. The grief-stricken father fell to his knees as his son's horribly gashed body was brought in, and called out to the little girl in blind rage.

"You were the one who killed him!" he accused, pointing at the young girl.

"I only told you," she replied, her voice solemn, "You asked for proof, so here it is."

Bewildered and agitated, the Emperor ordered his men to imprison the girl, much to everyone's dismay. She was blamed to be a witch, and as the guards dragged her to the underground dungeons, she shouted that the Emperor's blatant ignorance would be what would cause fall of Varietin, and cursed the emperor to eternal damnation.

Of course, since the girl wasn't truly a witch, her curse fell on deaf ears. However, decades later, just before the first emperor dropped to his deathbed, chaos overtook Varietin, for the selfish old king had not named any successor, even on the verge of his demise. The next few years saw nothing but havoc and turmoil for Varietin and its people.

The late king's sons waged wars amongst themselves; the walls of the Palace were always covered in blood, and the Holy Kingdom and its rulers had shut their doors to outsiders.

Finally, the one of bring an end to all these wars was not one of royal blood, but rather a mere guard. Artur Vedoh had only been twenty one years of age, with nothing but a rusting sword and fire in his eyes, when he massacred everyone in the throne room, and declared himself emperor.

The local people, who had lost almost everything in the past few years, accepted him as their new king. Artur's first order of business, after dethroning the whole council, was to march into the dungeons and free the girl he had grown up hearing stories about.

The little girl, by this time, had only grown up to be a young woman, willowy in nature. He helped her out, ordered servants to wash and dress her, and presented to her the option of living in the palace. The girl declined this offer, and informed Artur that she would rather eat her own flesh than stay in that place any longer. Before leaving however, she told Artur something that would hang out in his dreams for the foreseeable future.

Despondent as he was, the new king nevertheless let the girl go. He watched as she flitted down the stairs of the palace, a skip in her step. The saccharine sunshine glinted on her skin, and she herself seemed to twinkle on the ground, brighter than anything around her. He watched as she fluttered past the palace gates, disappearing from his line of sight.

Not long after, in his office chambers, Artur thought back on what the girl had told him. If what she said was to be true, they would have to take actions fast. He got up and signalled his newly hired secretary to come in. Artur then told him to write a letter to the Holy Kingdom, asking them to make preparations to potentially welcome the arrival of a new hero from an entirely different world, someone who'd been prophesied to save Varietin shall he ever fail.
