Chapter 16 - INDUCTION

Uncle Thomas with Luckson looking smart in his new school uniform and satchel on his back proceeded to the administion block. Luckson and uncle Thomas went past an overgrown but well manicured hybiscus hedge, through a glass door, took a right turn and proceeded.

Finally arriving at a door labelled headmaster's office, and Uncle Thomas knocked a couple of times. He was promptly met with a "come in" in a masculine voice. Walking into the office they were greeted by with a smile by giant of a man sitting behind a desk and a tall slender lady who was standing on the other side of the huge desk.

"Please be seated", invited the giant who was formally dressed in a suit with the buttons of the jacket undone, with a wave of the hand towards the two visitors seats facing the desk.

"Thank you", replied uncle Thomas pleasantly, settling himself in one of the two visitors chairs while Luckson took up the other chair.

"How may I be of serve?" , the giant asked in a surprisingly gentle tone which belayed his giant stature, which might have been suited harsher tone. Even the politeness with which he put across the question was unmistakable in it's humility.

"I 'm Mr Masiya", replied uncle Thomas trying his best to match the other's politeness and feel of sophistication in the way he spoke. "We spoke about my nephew who would be coming to join your school for the new term".

"Oh yes, Mr Masiya and this young man must be Luckson", he concluded his eyes falling on Luckson.

"Miss Modzi, here and I were just talking about you", he said referring to the tall lady, who all long had been standing quietly smiling shyly. She had been looking a bit out of form as though she was feeling uncomfortable at being present during the discussion.

The mention of her name however brought a pleasant turn and she was only too glad to come into the conversation.

Turning his attention Miss Modzi, Luckson noted that she was well formed if not outright beautiful. The pencil skirt and sleeveless blouse she was wearing helped to bring out her figure. Even the eye glasses she was wearing only seemed to enhance her beauty.

"Oh yes, Mr Chikomo", she replied rousing Luckson from his day dreaming, and confirming what the headmaster had just said. "We have had so much about you", she added throwing Luckson a friendly smile. Miss Modzi was fairly young and Luckson guessed that she was still in her mid twenties. That made her not that much older than himself. There was something about her that reminded him of the freshness of spring, and when she spoke her sweet voice was definitely like a breath of fresh air.

"This is Miss Modzi", Mr Chikomo said referring the lady who now seemed a lot more relaxed.

"It's just as well that you arrived while Miss Modzi was still in my offce", Mr Chikomo remarked pleasantly. She is a physics teacher and coincidentally, will also be Luckson's class teacher".

"Uh hm", diplomatically interjected Miss Modzi, instantly drawing Mr Chikomo's attention

"Oh yes, Miss Modzi is rushing for her classes. You can go with her, Luckson.

"Uh hm", uncle Thomas knocked his consent and Luckson followed Miss Modzi out of the office while uncle Thomas and Mr Chikomo remained discussing further.

Miss Modzi led Luckson out through another entrance which faced the main school buildings, along a concrete lane garlanded with flower beds and strips of manicured lawns on either side. He could see tennis courts laid out a distance behind the main school building. There were a couple of basketball a bit further on.

"Like what you see?", Miss Modzi asked sweetly noting the way Luckson was appreciatively looking around. The question seemed to catch Luckson off guard as he stared dumbly at her luscious lips moving as she asked him.

"No, I mean yes, Miss Modzi", he quickly mumbled, I didn't mean to stare".

"It's a beautiful school", she went with a sweet smile.

"Oh yes it is", Luckson recovering with a notable sigh of relief which Miss Modzi did not miss.

"What did you think, I meant?", she asked before breaking into a laugh.

"Come on, let's get to class", she urged pleasantly.

They proceed up a short staircase and turned into a long corridor lined with classroom doors on one side. While the other side looked out on to a rectangular space where the smell of freshly trimmed lawn was emanating from. The space was surrounded by more balconies similar to the one they were in. Even from where they were Luckson could more classroom doors on the further side of each corridor.

There was a second set of balconies built onto of those on the ground, that were visible to the naked eye. They went past classrooms of sharp minded students eager for the learning process to resume. Some were looking forward to become doctors, others couldn't grow up fast enough or learn quickly enough to find themselves innovation centers pioneering the next wave of cutting edge technologies. Some wanted to run the financial affairs of the nation as economists bankers, etc.

Others clearly clueless. Yet thrown together in the institution of education, looking alike their school uniforms, there did not seem to be any difference between the pupils. Only time would tell who was who in the packing order of academia, who would fly high and who would crash out in the rat race of life.

Others would go on to becoming sports stars, earning millions from simply kicking a ball, while the intellectual classes would literally go bald scratching their heads, wrestling with th technicalities of putting the human fruit print on distant alien worlds. Alternatively they could wrack their brains fighting some contagious epidemic in laboratories or juggling with the intricacies reproducing gravity in space.

This holy grail of human development was where it began, this was where the goats would be separated from the sheep, and the sheep from wolves.

Miss Modzi finally led Luckson into an open door.

The pupils smartly sprang to their feet upon seeing her walk, loudly proclaiming, "Good morning Miss Modzi.

"Good morning class", she replied pausing in front of the class with the black board behind her. "Please be sitted".

The pupils automatically complied and Miss Modzi proceeded.

"Today we are joined by a new student".
