Chapter 57 - Chapter 56: The Pain That Accompanies a Man's Happy Fate

Steep hills lined the sides of the large canyon, with a five-metre wide passage in the middle. This was the best place to lay a trap for the wolf riders.

Since everyone had agreed with Han Shuo's plans, they all started to get busy. Han Shuo didn't know much about setting traps himself. A group of people first used strong and tensile ropes to set tripwires and snares along the passage. Fanny and Gene then used advanced necromancy to release an acid swamp behind the tripwires.

The Acid Bog spell was an advanced necromancy spell. It could turn a large area of land into a muddy and swampy bog. Once formed, the Sour Bog would instantly devour anyone who ventured into it, leaving nothing but a pile of bones. This was one of the more diabolical advanced magics of the Great Necromancer.

However, it took a great deal of mental strength to successfully cast Acid Bog magic. The range of Acid Bog would vary according to the mental strength of each necromancer. Fanny and Gene had teamed up, but they had only created a five metre by five metre bog. Judging by the way they looked, they were already at their limit.

A few large boulders had been placed on either side of the mound, ready to crash down on the approaching orc-wolf riders. The bodies of the Necromancy Major's students and teachers were all extremely fragile and delicate, so it was naturally Han Shuo who took on the task of moving the large boulders himself.

After making these preparations, Gene, Bella, Bach and a few others took cover and lay in wait on one side of the passage. Han Shuo, Fanny, Lisa and a few others were in charge of the other mound.

"You've changed a lot now. If we make it back to the academy alive, your contribution will be the greatest. I'll be sure to report this to the school authorities and get some rewards for you!" Fanny's body was crouched behind a large boulder, her eyes patrolling over Han Shuo's body, whispering as she did so.

Han Shuo was in the middle with Lisa to his left and Fanny to his right. The three of them were very close to each other and when Fanny spoke in a low voice, her breath smelled like the scent of orchids and breathed directly on Han Shuo's right cheek. The faint perfume made Han Shuo's heart race like a monkey and his mind gallop like a horse. He suddenly felt that this time the danger was also full of gentle charm.

He scratched his head out of habit and smiled sincerely. He turned his head to look boldly at Fanny's charming features. Fanny's hair was tousled and dishevelled at the moment, and her face was a little pale, having expended a great deal of mental energy in casting the acid swamp. This was in stark contrast to her usual alluring beauty and overbearing demeanour, revealing a different kind of beauty to Han Shuo.

"Damn it, I'm talking to you, stop staring at me!" " Fanny became angry when she saw Han Shuo staring at her, mesmerised and paying no attention to her. This guy is getting more and more insolent... he even dares to stare at me so insolently now.

"Heh heh, Master Fanny, you're so beautiful. It won't cost you anything if I stare at you, so why are you so stingy?" Han Shuo flirted with a light laugh.

A sudden wave of pain shot up Han Shuo's left arm. His face turned wry and he turned his head to cast a glance at Lisa. When he saw that Lisa was staring at him viciously, he hastily forced out a smile and said, "Of course, Lisa, you're also very beautiful, heh heh."

Holding her head high with a slight snort, Lisa glared at Han Shuo and said angrily. "Don't think that I can't take you down a notch now that you're stronger. Huh. Since we have some free time now, hurry up and tell me how you came to have mental strength and even master the bone arrow magic. How many secrets have you kept from me?"

"Eh, what secrets? I was able to master Bone Arrow Magic thanks to you. If you hadn't used Soul Torment to torture me to death, I would still be as useless as before. Thanks to you!"

Her face saddened, Lisa suddenly hung her head and sighed lightly. She said in a low voice, "You still haven't forgiven me. I know you've always hated me for using the Agony of the Soul on you, but I didn't mean anything by it originally. I also didn't know that it would almost kill you!"

"No, I really don't blame you. Stop thinking crazy thoughts Lisa. It's not like you don't know how I feel about you. How could I hold a grudge against you?" Han Shuo started and suddenly remembered his role and rushed to speak words of comfort to Lisa.

At that moment, Han Shuo's right arm also felt the same pain and he turned his head to see Fanny's slender jade fingers forcefully pinching him as well. A wave of bitterness rose from his heart as he sighed softly, thinking that a man's happy destiny was indeed something that couldn't be enjoyed. He asked ironically, "Master Fanny, what's wrong now?"

Fanny also started slightly when she heard Han Shuo's words and thought, "What's wrong with me? What does this conversation between the two of them have to do with me? How come I couldn't resist the urge to pinch him? She tossed her head slightly, snorting as she did so, then put a faint smile on her face and raised her voice slightly. "Lisa, what did he mean about his feelings for you?"

A panicked expression suddenly appeared on Lisa's face as she hurriedly waved her hands to cover herself. "Nothing, nothing. Master Fanny, you must have heard wrong. Haha, isn't that so, Bryan?" She didn't forget to throw a threatening look at Han Shuo as a warning after she spoke, "You're dead meat if you dare talk about this!

Nodding his head wryly, Han Shuo glossed over the matter. He smiled, "Yes, Master Fanny must have expended too much mental energy and something must have developed

which can affect your hearing?"

"Is that so?" Fanny looked suspiciously at Han Shuo and asked in a strange tone.

"Of course, of course. Oh right, Master Fanny, when we return to the academy, I'd like to get rid of my slave status. I've earned enough gold coins this time in the Dark Forest and I don't want to carry the status of a slave forever!"

"Don't worry, if we can really return safely to the Academy this time, I will contact the authorities on your behalf. Not only will we remove your status as a slave, but I'll also remove your status as a runner. You'll be a student in the Necromancy major, and I'll personally teach you more advanced necromancy magic. With your potential, I believe your future achievements will definitely surpass those of all the current students in the Necromancy Major!"

Fanny looked at Han Shuo with satisfaction and gave him a firm promise. She thought privately, when he becomes a Necromancy major student and his magic increases rapidly, he'll truly be able to throw off his current shackles. Maybe then... eh. What am I thinking? It looks like I've really used too much mental energy. Otherwise, why would I be thinking such crazy thoughts?

Han Shuo had an overjoyed expression on his face, but at that moment, his brow suddenly furrowed and he closed his eyes, concentrating silently for a moment. Suddenly, he called out to the other side, "Master Gene, be careful, I can already hear faint footsteps. I think the orcs' wolf riders will be arriving soon."

"Understood, you must be careful as well. Bryan, Master Fanny and I have just expanded a lot of mental power, so you'll have to protect Master Fanny well!"

"Don't worry, with Master Fanny by my side, if I don't die first, Master Fanny won't suffer any harm!"

Han Shuo felt more pain in his left arm as soon as he'd finished speaking. He knew immediately that Lisa must have done something in her anger. He quickly turned his head to the left and explained to Lisa. However, he didn't notice that Fanny's gaze on his right at that moment had subtly picked up a few hints of complicated emotions.

Finally, the muffled footsteps from the distance slowly approached. Even the ordinary students and teachers of Necromancy Major had heard those muffled sounds, and all of them involuntarily focused their attention on how to launch the sudden attack afterwards.

"Damn it, why is it Beacher and the others from the Light Major?!"

Just as everyone was holding their breath in concentration and about to roll the huge boulders down the hills, Han Shuo's sharp eyes suddenly realised that the incoming people weren't the orc wolf riders, but rather Beacher, Irene, and the others from the academy's light major, who happened to be fleeing in stricken, bedraggled panic. A few unfamiliar mages were thrown into the mix, and then they were all riding shrieking, whinnying battle steeds that looked like they were about to collapse. Expressions of extreme weariness were on all their faces.

Fanny frowned and suddenly stuck her head out from behind the huge boulder. Her slender neck stretched out as she shouted, "Master Beacher, stop at once. There are traps here that we've set specifically for the wolf riders."

Hearing Fanny's words, Beacher and the others who were charging towards the tripwires hurried to stop themselves at that crucial moment. Beacher raised his head to look at the necromancy students and teachers on either side of the hill and immediately understood the situation. He called out, "The orc wolf riders are right behind us. What shall we do?"

"Give up the horses and let them run on. Then cross quickly, we'll tell you where the traps are. Otherwise, if you stay where you are, only death awaits you!" Han Shuo stuck out his head and called back calmly.

Beacher and the others only hesitated for a moment when they heard Han Shuo's words and then all moved according to his instructions. They dismounted, used their daggers to pierce the butts of the battle horses, and then charged after the horses were pierced. Then, under Fanny's vocal admonition, her crew frantically traversed the tripwires and acid swamp, quickly climbing the hills on either side.

Another wave of muffled footsteps reached everyone's ears. This time everyone knew it was the orcish wolf riders who were in hot pursuit.

"Conceal yourself well and prepare to fight!" Han Shuo shouted loudly as everyone carefully hid themselves, planning to give these orc wolf riders, who were used to pillaging, killing, raiding and looting, a lesson in blood.
