Chapter 9 - Waiting for the Next Work (Part 1)

"A dimension dominated by Demon?" asked Lyra. "What is the name of that dimension? I know some Demon-dominated dimensions. Maybe it is one of them?"

"It has no formal name registered on the system for now. But I call them as Karkugu Dimension. It came from the most substantial civilization there. The Dimension ID is LVG-0028-8144. Ever heard of that?"

Lyra opened her PDA. Her finger moves fast in operating the PDA, looking for the dimension with ID number LVG-0028-8144.

"First time I ever heard of this dimension. Karkugu was it?" said Lyra. "You said many summoning circle lead to that dimension? When did you start to find those summoning circles?"

"When was it… It should be around three months ago?" said Traek. He is unsure when exactly he found those circles. But he is confident that it was not a long time ago.

"I remember all the cycles that lead there have the same method of opening the barrier between dimensions. So the knowledge of making the summoning circle should come from the same source," added Traek.

"Same source? Even though many circles are scattered around many dimensions?" asked Lyra.

"Yes. The chance for many people in different dimensions to build the same circle at the same time is too low. Someone must have provided that 'many people' some knowledge about a basic summoning circle," said Traek.

"Anyway, my job is done here. I will go back first. You two might get assigned to observe the circle in this place. So be careful, okay?"

Traek waved his hand, and a portal appeared in front of him. He then waved to both Lyra and Linden before entering the portal. Right after the dragonkin enters the portal, the portal loses its power and disintegrates, not leaving any trace.

"Is that magic?" asked Linden.

"Yup. It is cool, right?" said Lyra, to which Linden nodded in reply. "I also wanted to learn that kind of magic. As of now, I can only do the most basic magic."

"Eh! Is it possible to learn magic?"

"It is. Look," Lyra said as she pointed her index finger toward an empty place. Water pours from her finger, dampening the ground where it lands.

"Woah…"

Lyra moves her finger from left to right, up and down, pouring water everywhere. She does this for a few minutes.

"Senior, i-is that all?" asked Linden.

"Yes, that is the magic that I can do right now. It is underwhelming, right? I wanted to do things like what Tracc had done. But here I am, a low-powered hose."

Linden chuckled when he heard Lyra's joke. "Good one."

Lyra stopped doing her trick and said, "Now then, we should move to our next work."

She operates her PDA looking at her list of work.

"Hmm… Check your work list. Is there any work listed?" asked Lyra.

Linden briefly checked his PDA. "Eh? There is no work listed?"

"Looks like we will need to wait for the system to calculate the new information," said Lyra.

"New information? The one from senior Traek?"

"Yes. Want to eat something? This is a seaside town. Some seafood might be good…" said Lyra.

"Is it okay to eat at work?" asked Linden.

"It is okay, don't worry. Right, as a senior, I will treat you. Let's talk while eating. So we can understand each other better."

The two of them swiftly walked to the beachside part of the town. Many roadside stalls are lined up following the beach contour. Most of them are selling fish-related food, either grilled, soup, or other way of cooking.

"What should we eat?" muttered Lyra. She is walking around the place. Her hands are tucked inside the pocket of her hoodie. She is looking at the menu on each stall, searching for something that might interest her.

"Senior, now that I looked around, I found that the stalls here are posting their menu in a foreign language. But why did I understand it?"

"Well, that is Nanomachine translating it for you. You did not notice Track was also speaking in his mother language?"

Linden opened his eyes, "Now that you said it. He was speaking some gibberish, but I could understand it… This Nanomachine is really useful."

"Hey, this one looks good. Want to eat this one?" said Lyra. She stopped in front of a stall selling some seafood hotpot.

"This also looks like a suitable place to talk," added Lyra.

"Sure," said Linden. He is okay with eating anything.

Lyra sat at one of the tables, followed by Linden, that sat in front of her. She then called the waiter and ordered two portions of hotpot. She also chooses what sea creatures that will get added to the pot.

"Did you just order the food using the local language?" asked Linden.

"Yup. I have learned this language before. Who knows that it will get used here," said Lyra. She smiled and looked at Linden, "How old are you right now?"

"Me? Twenty-one, I think?"

"Twenty-one? We are not that far in age… I am entering twenty-six this year."

"Is that so? Senior, when did you start working in this place?" asked Linden.

"Around three or four years ago. So I was around your age when I joined. Before that, I was working as a— Wait, guess it. What was my previous job?"

"Eh? How can I know?"

"You should know. I have given a hint before this," said Lyra as she grins. "Come on, just guess. There is no penalty for a wrong answer."

"Then… A model?"

"Woah, did you just praise me? But too bad, that is wrong."

"Businesswoman," "No," "Cafe owner," "Try again." …

Linden tried to guess by blurting out every profession he could think of. But none of it was correct. He only stopped when the hotpot was carried over to their table.

"Let me tell you. I was a translator," said Lyra. She is smiling, enjoying the small talk.

"Translator?" Linden remembered that Lyra used the local language when she ordered the food. "Wow, that is cool. What language did you translate to or from?"

"I can understand seven languages. I can translate freely between those seven."

"Se-seven!?"
