Chapter 4 - Nanomachine Effect

In the end, nothing special happened today, and Linden gives the gun back to his senior.

"Senior Lyra, how do we go back?" asked Linden.

As far as Linden knows, there is no door with the weird LED Board thing in this place.

"We use this," answered Lyra.

She shows Linden a circular thing similar to the one installed on the doorknob.

"This thing is a one-time portal. Use this on a door, and it will become a temporary portal that links this place to the office."

Linden nods his head repeatedly, amazed.

Lyra makes a gesture to let Linden pass through the door first. She only goes toward the door after that.

They are back in the office not long after that.

"Okay! The job for today is done. If there is any emergency job, it will be notified via your PDA," said Lyra. "Also, remember to tell if something happened to your body. We will then check your body.

"Then see you tomorrow."

"See you tomorrow, Senior!"

Lyra walked to the main door of the building. She tapped her card to a card reader beside the door, and the panel on the door changed its displayed coordinate. She only opens the door after confirming that the number has changed.

Linden followed what Lyra had done to get back home.

Lying on his bed, Linden is playing with his phone. His hair is still a little wet after the shower. The sweet fragrance of his shampoo hit his nose, bringing a calming mood.

Combined with the dimmed room, it is a perfect situation to fall asleep and get some rest. But for some reason, both of Linden's eyes are wide open.

Even though he wandered around doing his work before, he feels his body is brimming with energy. Not even a speck of tiredness can be felt.

"This might be because of that Nanomachine?" muttered Linden. "If I can't sleep, I will do some other things instead."

But before he moves from his bed, he operates his PDA and files a report about his body. He writes about what he feels right now. Only after that, he walks toward the main door of his house.

Linden puts on his running shoes and steps outside. Of course, he didn't forget to lock the door.

The scenery outside is dark. It has been around an hour since the sun sets on the horizon.

Linden glanced around and found no one nearby. He can see many houses with their light on, indicating some activity inside those houses.

"Well, it is dark. Of course, people prefer to be inside. Not to say that there are not many people living in this area."

If this is the city, Linden might see someone walking around like in the day.

"Let's see how far can I get?" muttered Linden.

He decided to run. It has been a long time since the last time he ran.

In the last few weeks, Linden was busy and a bit stressed applying for jobs. His weight has also started to climb. It is almost reaching the overweight level. He thinks that this is a perfect time to start exercising again.

As the wind grazes his face, he feels more and more refreshed. Because of that, he started to raise his speed, little by little.

Around an hour later. On the edge of the city.

"I came here," muttered Linden.

He can see that some people are out and doing their own thing. This place is not the city center, so not many people are here. But compared to his tranquil neighborhood, this is a lively place that is full of energy.

Linden can see many stores lining the street. From restaurants to bars, they are all serving their customers.

"Wow! It is already this hour, but they are still packed with customers."

"Wait, I should not be worrying about that."

Linden ran from his home to this place. The distance he traveled was about 30 km. Add a bit more, and it is a marathon distance.

"This is unbelievable. I ran that distance in only an hour."

Linden tried to recall the time for a full marathon race. He is sure that he was faster than many people out there. Even the pro runner.

Yet despite that, Linden is still okay. A few droplets of sweat have formed on his face, but nothing more than that. He doesn't feel tired or out of breath.

"I think I should report this," noted Linden to himself.

"Now, what should I do?"

It is not common for Linden to play in the city at night. He usually comes to this place on the weekend at noon, primarily to meet with his friend, talking about their situation.

Linden has wanted to experience the night city before. And now is a good time for that. Of course, the first step to experiencing the city at night is the food.

Now that he has gotten a job, splurging a bit of money to buy some expensive food is not a problem. Linden knows that his salary is a lot higher than a standard job. A month of working will net him roughly the same as a few years of other people's work.

Walking around, Linden looks for something that interests him.

'Barbeque, noodles, sandwich, hmm….'

Linden's eyes suddenly lits up when he finds a unique menu in a noodle restaurant.

'Hell's Spiciest Noodle. I think I can eat this one.'

Linden is wondering how his body will react to super spicy food. He believed that he should be able to handle it.

He walks to the restaurant feeling confident. Not long after, he ordered the spiciest thing in the shop, a soup noodle where the soup was so red.

Linden uses a chopstick to carry the noodles into his mouth.

As soon as the noodle touches his tongue, Linden feels his body temperature rising. A split second after that, he feels pain in his whole mouth. A few droplets of sweat are also forming on his face.

He opens his mouth, trying to breathe in as much air as possible. He also subconsciously sticks his tongue out.

'I'm sorry! I will not look down on super hot food anymore! I also will not be cocky any— Hmm?'

But the pain only lasts for a while before it is gone.

He scooped another portion of the spicy noodle. And just like before, he feels pain in his mouth for a second before it is gone again. Leaving only the thick taste of the spice and seasoning.

Linden celebrated in his heart. His hand doesn't stop carrying the noodles into his mouth. His pace also started to increase, to the bewilderment of the shop owner.

When Linden finishes the noodles, everyone inside the restaurant claps their hands.

'I should add this to the report,' noted Linden mentally.
