The next six months of training in the camp were tailored to cater to the specific cultivation paths of the children. With their improved physical conditions, they could now focus on learning different weapon techniques and enhancing their faith cultivation. The sparring ring became a hub of activity during this time, as kids chose to resolve misunderstandings and train through battles. While lethal weapons were prohibited in the ring, injuries still occurred. Some children training to be healers in the camp took advantage of these instances to hone their skills.
In contrast to the bustling activity of other camp participants, Caleb seemed to disappear. He dedicated most of his time to cultivating in solitude within his house. Apart from the monthly compulsory challenge, no one caught sight of Caleb. A few sceptical children dared to challenge him during this period, only to be defeated after prolonged battles. This fueled hope among others that his progress had not matched their own, despite their significant advancements.
Mealtimes for the ranked houses underwent some changes, a new dish called Beast Meat Elixir Soup was added to the menu. Made from the meat of powerful beasts, this soup contained dense concentrations of faith energy that could aid cultivation. For Caleb, it was the first time he had tasted something like this, but children from wealthier clans were accustomed to enjoying this luxurious soup alongside their regular meals. Caleb eagerly devoured the soup as soon as it was delivered, savouring every drop and even licking the spoon clean.
Caleb dedicated nearly all his time to training inside the crystal ball, going to the extent of sleeping inside it. Apart from attending to his bodily functions and eating, his focus remained solely on training.
On the 10th day of the second year of the training camp, the training ground transformed. The rumour mill had already begun speculating about the reason behind the makeover. Some speculated that the next competition would involve life-and-death battles against wild beasts, while others believed it had to do with dethroning the current top 10 participants since there were only ten battle rings.
The anticipation didn't last long as the guards rushed into the dormitories and ranked areas, gathering the children for an announcement. The Third Captain addressed the ranked children, acknowledging the changes that had taken place over the past six months. He commended their progress, attributing it to their hard work and the guidance of various instructors. He informed them that they could engage in as many battles as they wished to increase their rankings. At the end of the day, he would select the two best participants to compete in the final battle the following day. The children were instructed to register their challenges with the guards stationed outside each battle area.
Without delay, each ring was filled with children eager to improve their rankings. Some succeeded in attaining a higher rank, while others fell short. Asher from the Levi Clan managed to move up to the 15th rank on the list but still had a long way to go before securing a spot in the ranked houses. However, none of the top 10 children had been challenged so far.
"The current top 10 will be removed from their ranks; everyone must battle to establish a fair ranking," declared the Third Captain.
The former top-ranked participant confidently strode into the first ring, radiating power and displaying signs of having achieved the Unity stage in body cultivation. The girl claimed her place in the second ring, while Caleb darted into the third, spear in hand, closing his eyes and patiently awaiting his challenger, paying no attention to the actions of the other rankers.
Observing the scene, the Third Captain found the situation intriguing. "Challengers, step forward!" he called out.
Osmos, the defender of ring 1, stood tall and muscular, his brawler gloves bearing witness to his dedication to combat. His rugged appearance and scars spoke of years of experience and primal energy that exuded from him, ready to face any opponent who dared to stand before him.
Facing Osmos was a boy named Alex, who drew curiosity and intrigue from the onlookers. His refined demeanour and impeccable attire hinted at a privileged background. Some questioned his place among the aspiring fighters, attributing it to his family connections that granted him access to the training camp. However, there was something about Alex that exuded determination and a belief in his abilities, despite his initial low ranking.
Clutching a polished training sword, Alex commanded attention with his sharp, focused gaze. The intensity in his eyes hinted at untapped potential and an unwavering desire to prove himself. Despite the scepticism surrounding his status, there was no denying the fiery determination burning within him.
Meanwhile, Caleb sensed a presence entering his ring and opened his eyes, momentarily surprised to see a face he hadn't encountered in a year. Upon noticing Tobias's arrogant smirk, Caleb lost interest in a battle for learning purposes. He wanted to bring the fight to a swift conclusion before it even began. Tobias, physically transformed from a year ago, now possessed a mature appearance and a muscular physique—a testament to his progress within the camp. With a condescending expression, Tobias approached Caleb, delivering taunts with a wooden club resting on his shoulders.
"Branch family members should know their place. Step down now, or I will have to kick you off," he said.
Unfazed by Tobias's provocations, Caleb lazily responded. Firmly gripping his spear, he assumed a stance resembling an eagle preparing to swoop down on its prey. This peculiar stance drew discussions among the children, but the experienced Third Captain could discern that Caleb had successfully incorporated his six stances into a unique spear art. The captain couldn't contain his excitement and promptly reached out to deliver a message to the palace.
"Start!" the referee guard instructed, retreating to the corner of the ring.
"Water Enhancement, Freeze" Tobias yelled as he activated his skill, enveloping his club with water that he subsequently froze into menacing spikes. It was evident that Tobias had already reached the Disciple level and acquired several faith skills to complement his blessings.
Witnessing Tobias's skill, Caleb seamlessly transitioned into the second form of the serpentine stance, known as "Slither." He had developed this stance into a movement technique, integrating it into his spear art. The Third Captain was astonished to see that Caleb not only incorporated the stances into his spear art but also grasped their essence. Caleb's spear exuded a unique bestial aura that only those with trained eyes could perceive.
As Caleb entered his attack range, he utilised the flexibility and muscle toughness of the Bear Form. With a mighty thrust, he launched his spear toward Tobias. Realising he wouldn't have enough time to swing his spiked club at Caleb, Tobias had no choice but to abandon his offensive skill and create a defensive water shield. Caleb seized the momentum of his attack and unleashed a flurry of spear techniques: thrusts, sweeps, smashes, and circular strikes.
Caught on the defensive, Tobias could only fortify his defence with his club. In contrast, Caleb's sole focus was on relentless attacks.
Tobias's shield cracked as he depleted his reserves of faith energy, forcing him to admit defeat. Disheartened, Tobias descended from the ring, overhearing Caleb's parting words. "Every one of us desires the opportunity to grow stronger. You are growing stronger, and so am I. If you wish to continue challenging me, I will continue growing stronger to maintain my position."
After all the matches concluded, the new rankings were announced:
Rank 1: Alex
Rank 2: Caleb
Rank 3: Osmos
Rank 4: Lumina
…
Rank 11: Tobias
Rank 15: Asher
The Third Captain then declared that a special battle between the new Rank 1 and Rank 2 would take place the following day, marking the end of the ranked battles. He urged them to prepare themselves and be in their best condition for the match, as the winner would have the opportunity of a lifetime arranged by the palace.
