Chereads / Rebirth: Ascension to Infinity / Chapter 8 - First Blood

Chapter 8 - First Blood

Endyr ran as fast as possible for his little 4 year old legs and arrived at the room itself. There, he found Sia huddled in a corner crying to herself. Upon seeing his sister safe and sound, a strange and foreign emotion filled him, and he unknowingly relaxed slightly. "Sia" he called out, stepping forward.

She looked up at his voice, her eyes widened before she lunged at him. She quickly grabbed him and held him tight, sobbing. "I thought you were dead...I thought the killer got you" she cried emotionally. Endyr simply allowed himself to be held, not knowing what to say. "Did you see the killer?" he asked.

Sia shook her head. "I was in my room, waiting for one of the maids to bring me my food. But when she never showed up, I went out to look for her and...I saw them" she whispered the last part, clearly traumatised by the sight.

"And then you fled here?" Endyr surmised. Sia nodded, before breaking into tears once more. "I wanted to try and get you but I could hear people in the corridor to the nursery. I didn't know if it was the killer...I'm sorry Altair!".

Upon learning that his sister had fled here rather than get him, Endyr did initially feel a little ticked off. But now, he simply felt pity for Sia. "I understand sister. You panicked and weren't thinking straight. Speaking off which, why didn't you close the safe-room door?"

Sia looked at him in confusion. "But I did? The door was closed after me."

At once, Endyr's instincts started blaring at him, so he grabbed Sia and pulled her back with him. Where he stood, shadows swished and cut the ground. If he hadn't moved, he and Sia would have likely been cut in half in one go.

By the entrance to the room, a figure cloaked in black stood. Their face was hidden by the hood, but they seemed to be a man. Four daggers were tied to his belt, two on each side. All of them dripped with blood, but the man's cloak was spotless. Upon seeing him, Endyr couldn't help but widen his eyes.

His advanced senses were screaming that the person in front of him was strong enough to squish him like a bug ten times over. Behind him, Sia peeked out.

"Who are you?!" she yelled, her voice shaking. The killer simply chuckled before leisurely advancing. "This mission is a shitty one. I take no in murdering kids, but here we are anyway" he complained, before pulling out of the daggers. "Stay still, and at least I can make it quick.

Endyr felt a tug and suddenly he was behind Sia, who stood protectively in front of him with her arms spread. "Don't hurt my brother" she begged. The killer merely looked at her before shaking his head. "Sorry little girl, but I have a contract. It's truly nothing personal."

With that, he dashed forward and plunged his blade towards Sia's neck. Just before the blade made contact however, a brilliant bright light enveloped her body and pushed back Endyr and the man. Endyr stared in amazement at the sight: his sister's Seed of Ascension was beginning to bloom.

Great gusts of wind were produced from her body, forcing the man and Endyr to shield their eyes. However, the man reacted quicker. Dark blue light gathered on his daggers and around his legs, allowing him to dash through the propulsion the winds generated. With a grunt, he swung the Mana filled dagger at Sia and sent her flying back.

She hit the wall, splattering blood from the wound on her neck but still alive. The light surrounding her began to dim however.

"Tsk, that was close. What are the chances she would Ascend at this moment?" the man seemed relieved to have taken care of a threat before it could escalate. He then turned his gaze to Endyr.

"Alright little boy, consider this a mercy. You won't have to see your sibling die, like I did" He stepped towards Endyr, who simply stared at the collapsed Sia. The sight of her blood spreading ignited a fiery rage in his heart, before it was doused by icy anger in his mind.

When the killer was mere feet away, Endyr turned to look at him. The killer flinched at the look in his eyes and subconsciously took a step back in response.

"Woah kid, relax. I said it ain't personal, didn't I?"

"Indeed you did" Endyr smiled. "But for me, it is now VERY personal"

Endyr raised his arm, pointing at the killer. "You have harmed my blood, someone who is kin to a Denizen of infinity. Your death is assured, you damn mongrel."

Everything happened instantly from there. The man suffered a sudden and massive headache upon hearing the words "Denizen of Infinity" and fell to his knees in pain. Meanwhile, an insane amount of Mana began to converge of Endyr. So great was its volume, that it began to take form as a viscous liquid, like syrup.

Unlike the killer's dark blue Mana, Endyr's was pure black and emitted a sense of dread. "What...what are you" the man gasped, feeling suffocated. "You haven't even awoken your Seed of Ascension yet!"

Endyr gave a cold smile in response, one the Grim Reaper would give before taking the life of its targets. All of the Mana suddenly stilled, before spinning in the opposite direction it was previously. Amidst the sound of roaring Mana, a familiar *ding!* rang out too.

Endyr ignored all the warnings and notifications of his System and merely issued a singular command to the man.

"Die"

At once, all the Mana surged towards the killer and swallowed him. He could only let out a single scream of pure agony before being literally torn apart from the inside by the rampaging Mana. While his death may have seemed quick, it was far from painless.

Once the man was dead, Endyr collapsed to the ground in exhaustion. He was bleeding from his eyes, nose, ears and mouth, and was rapidly fading out of consciousness. Just before succumbing, he saw one last notification from his System.

[Congratulations Host! You have unlocked your Stats and Bloodline. They will now be shown on your Status.]

Before he had time to process anything that happened, Endyr's body gave up and he fell down, asleep. Beside him, the bright light surrounding Sia receded completely. If he was awake, Endyr would see a bright orb, like a miniature sun, glowing where her heart was. A voice similar to the one Endyr hears, but slightly colder, whispered:

[Sia Atrazark had successfully Ascended.]

..........................................

Raphaniel Atrazark flew through the air, rage and fear present in her eyes in equal measure. "Damn those treacherous cunts! I will gut every last one of them if its the last thing I do!" she growled. Her Mana responded in turn, violently flaring up ad increasing her speed even more.

She soon arrived at her mansion and sensed that everyone within was dead. Terror gripped her hart at the sight, and she feared the wort for her children. Just as despair was about to take over, she sensed two faint-but present-life signatures.

Raphaniel blew through the mansion walls and appeared in the office/library. Upon seeing the open door to the safe-room, she entered without a second thought.

Her eyes first fell upon the shredded remains of the killer. He had exploded violently, splashing the walls and floor with his entrails and blood. None of his limbs were in recognisable shape, and he was closer to mince than a human at this point.

Next, Raphaniel saw her son Altair on the ground, a puddle of blood forming a halo around his head. In the corner, Sia lay slumped, unconscious but alive. Raphaniel nearly fell to her knees in relief before remembering the condition of her son.

She rushed to his side and cradled his head softly. Pulling him close, she began to chant...
