In the novel "The Tales of Earl Grey" Donellan used many means to find a way to help his son's weak body.
From the best doctor's to the most renown healer's. But none of them seemed to know the root cause of his weak constitution. However, this didn't stop Donellan and he never gave up.
He ended up coming across an informant who told him that there was someone who studied rare diseases of the mind and body who could be of help. And so he decided to pay this person a visit, of course this wouldn't be easy.
They were super secretive and mysterious and hard to reach, but luckily for Donellan since he had a lot of connections, he was finally able to find them. It still wasn't an easy task since he had to hire quite a few people to do some research on this mysterious healer which in turn demanded a lot of money.
But he was finally able to find a solution, which was something he had never thought he would find in some time. However in the novel, Donellan never had the chance to give Simuel the treatment because Simuel himself had refused. It there was nothing Donellan could do.
What surprised me the most about this situation wasn't the fact that Donellan found someone who could help his son since this was something readers already knew would happen. It was the fact that it was happening way too early. It would take several years for Donellan to find this person and by then Simuel would've already been 13 years old and would want nothing to do with his father anymore.
Even if that meant loosing the one chance at finding a cure for his body. That's how much he resented his father. The room in question had a completely different vibe compared to the entrance of the building we had entered. While everything was made out of marble over there, this place was made of brick and had an older feel to it, however that didn't make the room any less interesting.
The walls were filled with shelves and those shelves either contained books or other scientific materials. What caught my attention the most was the wall behind the woman.
They were filled with sketches of what looked like the human brain which I found quite strange. I guess the picture in front of me made me reminisce biology class with Mr Sanchez.
He was one of the few teachers who actually cared about their students and made sure that everyone got something out of his class even if they didn't understand the material completely. I was brought out of my reverie when I heard Donellan addressing the woman.
"Ms. Levinseon, I believe you were made aware of my visit, although it is sudden." He said with a deep voice.
The woman in question didn't pay much mind to Donellan's curt greeting which under normal circumstance would've been rude but turned to observe me. I also became curious since this would be the person that could've healed Simuel in the novel.
Ms. Levinseon had a rather tall build for a woman in this time period and she appeared younger than she looked. I could tell just by the way she carried herself that she could've been at least in her forties but she looked no younger than 30.
She had long blue hair that was tied up in a low ponytail behind her. Her eyes were also blue but darker than her hair and she had a calm and serene aura to her, but there was a certain intensity behind her blue eyes. When she looked at you it felt like she was staring into the depts of your soul.
Being stared at like that made me feel uncomfortable and unconsciously I reached out for Donellan who was right beside me and tugged on the ends of his vest. I instantly felt relief when I did that.
Donellan who noticed my discomfort gave Ms Levinseon a dark look and as if feeling his anger she turned away from me and faced Donellan.
"Right, Sir Donellan Grey, my name is Jane Levinseon and I believe that I may be of some help to you. I heard it took some great effort to find me.
"Is there any way you can help my child?" Donellan asked almost impatiently.
Ms. Levinseon took no offence and laughed lightly, her eyes brimming with curiousity.
"Why of course. I heard that the little master is suffering from a weak body and that you haven't been able to find a way to cure him.
If it's alright with you, I would like to examine the boy's body to see what exactly is wrong. I won't be able to give him the medicine he needs otherwise.
Donellan turned to look at me as if asking for my permission. I honestly appreciated that considering how all my life I haven't really been allowed to make my own decisions.
I was truly grateful and I myself was curious to see what exactly was causing my body to be this way. So without hesitate I nodded to let Donellan know I was okay with being examined.
Donellan did something that caught me my surprise and patted me on the head, meanwhile Ms Levinseon was preparing the materials needed for the examination.
I couldn't help but stare at Donellan wondering what was going through his mind.
"Little master, please come this way." And I followed behind her while she was guiding me to another room.
"Please sit here while I prepare the examination. You shouldn't be in any pain but you will experience some discomfort. I'll be scanning your body first to see if there's anything wrong with you physically. If nothing comes up I'll be scanning your mind. Don't worry I'll let you know once we get to that point."
She looked reliable and I didn't find any fault in the things she said. So I nodded in approval.
Ms. Levinseon then placed her hand over my body and I could feel some warmth permeating through the palm of her hands. Curiously, I looked up and noticed her hands were glowing and a light blue colour was enveloping her hands.
She "scanned" my body twice and the whole time I was observing her reactions but nothing seemed to change. Five minutes later, she stopped what she was doing and stayed still for a while.
"There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with your body physically, however just to be sure.."
"Nella." Ms Levinseon called out.
All of a sudden a beam of white light appeared almost blinding me. It took a couple of seconds for the light to die out and I was face to face with a little girl decked out in white.
I mean this literally. Her hair was white, skin was white and she wore a white dress.
Even though I was an shock by what I had just witnessed, I knew that this was the norm in this world and being too surprised would be suspicious. So I tried to dial down my state of awe and instead gave a look of curiosity since it was normal to be curious.
"This is one of my familiars, Nella. Nella means shining light, and just like the meaning of her name, she helps me find what I could be missing when examining someone. As you know, some diseases can be well hidden and show no visible signs while other diseases are much easier to spot. In your case young master Simuel, I couldn't find any noticeable illnesses, so I summoned Nella to help me find anything unconspicuous.
Oh so she's kind of like an MRI or X-ray of some sorts, I thought to myself.
Although Simuel hadn't uttered a single word throughout the examination so far, while observing the child Ms. Levinseon could see the glimmer of astonishment and curiosity in his eyes. She could tell that Simuel was a bright and inquisitive little boy.
Without a moment of hesitation Ms. Levinseon put out her hand and Nella entered her body leaving Ms. Levinseon with a bright glow. She then proceeded to put her hair on both sides of my hand and closed her eyes.
She warned me again that I would feel some malaise but it wouldn't be anything too painful.
And she began.
Now I won't tell you what ended up happening during and after that exam, at least not right now considering how hazy my memory of this was at the time. All I remember is that once the exam was over, Ms. Levinseon brought me a glass of water and went to talk with Donellan.
A couple minutes after that, Donellan came to get me stating we were leaving.
Even though everything from that moment was fuzzy, I could tell that there was definitely something wrong with me, something I would find out much later.
