Chapter 12 - Become King...

He didn't get the chance to open his mouth and ask whosoever it was to come in when he watched the flaked wooden door flap open, to reveal Waina, his uncle's wife.

"I brought your food," she informed him, watching a huge smile appear on Devin's face one she found extremely strange since that was the first time he would look so excited to see her with food.

'Maybe that accident thought him how to be more content..' having been informed by her husband about the events that led to their early appearance in the house.

Meanwhile, Devin's eyes were firmly fixed on the covered plate she brought with her, already feeling the hunger pangs in his belly, waging a new world war.

"Thank you, Aunty," he said stretching both his hands out to receive it. No matter how bad her cooking is, I'll take it.

Waina merely shrugged and handed him his food turning around to leave, when she suddenly stopped and turned back when she unexpectedly heard the sound of the plate she had used to cover the food hitting the floor.

It was already old and broken around the edges and something she should have tossed away but she felt it was more than enough for the stray her husband decided to foolishly pick up.

"What the hell is this?" Devin asked with a look of utter disgust on his face and a high-pitched tone that carried across his feeling of anger. The top plate hitting the ground wasn't even something he registered in his mind as he stared at the small puddle of different colors on the plate he had been given.

It was all he could do not to toss it right in the woman's face, something he would have instantly done, if whatever was in his hand smelt as bad as it looked.

"What else do you think it is? Food of course,"

"You call this food. This! Then maybe you should prove it to me," Devin responded with a sneer on his face, moving closer to Waina with a domineering aura around him.

"Wha…what the hell are you doing?" Waina asked, stuttering a little as she spoke while scrambling back at the same time, in reaction to the overbearing posture of the person in front of her.

At that moment, Devin saw red and he was determined to take it out on the woman in front of him who dared to bring such rubbish in front of him.

He already felt extremely weak and frustrated with the current situation he found himself in, yet the one hope he held onto had suddenly been dashed away.

'A proper meal…at this point, I'll die from starvation and I might as well take her with me,'

Devin grabbed the plate tightly in his hand and rushed forward with it…

But the thought had only occurred to him, as he moved closer to her prepared to angrily force whatever she had prepared for him down her throat when he suddenly heard a familiar voice in his head, one he had heard before.

{I wouldn't do that if I were you,}

Devin couldn't help but do a double take as he instantly froze on the spot, going as far as to look around to confirm that apart from Waina, there was no one else.

"Yeah…don't you dare take one more step or you'll be sleeping outside. If you don't want to eat you can toss it out and starve…" Waina yelled at him right as she hurriedly made her way out of the shed, her footsteps much faster than when she came.

He's crazy…did the accident affect him that much… he would never have dared to go against me…did I go too far…maybe I should have prepared a slightly better meal…it doesn't matter, he had nowhere else to go.

With different thoughts going through her head she hurried back to the main house, leaving Devin in a state of utter confusion.

"Are you there…whosoever you are…" he called out in a low voice, one that couldn't be heard beyond the boundaries of the shed.

Of course, he got no response, only for him to begin to doubt his sanity the next second, wondering if the voice he heard was simply a delusion of his and if the negative effects of his starved body had already affected his brain beyond repair.

Annoyed, frustrated, hungry, and angry he flopped on the straw mat a second before remaining that it was almost the same as sitting on the floor.

"I can't leave like this," he mumbled allowed to himself, staring at his bony arms and legs, and his tanned and coarse skin that showed just how much difficulty the body he was in had been through.

There was no way of seeing his face yet but he was sure that it would simply be as average as the rest of the people he had seen in the small town.

"Who would have thought that someone like me would have to result to stealing just to eat?" he asked himself, chuckling aloud after concluding that, it was the only way he would survive and get slightly stronger.

Devin was still trying to figure out how he would do and how soon, when he suddenly heard the familiar voice resound in his head.

{As long as you don't get caught, it should be fine}

"Are you in my head!" were the only words he could blurt out the second he heard the voice again, in a way that made it extremely clear that his mind wasn't actually playing tricks on him.

{Obviously, There's no one else around, so where else would I be}

"Who are you?"

{The typical question…wouldn't you like to know}.

"You live in my head. I deserve to know how you got there,"

{Hmmm…}

Devin was instantly ticked off but seeing how he needed answers to the strange phenomena he was currently experiencing, he at first decided to keep quiet and allow the voice to speak only to be the one to break the silence, when about five minutes went by, and the so-called voice showed no intention of communicating.

"Are you one of those systems?" Devin suddenly asked with a hint of hope, recalling how Gaen who loved reading books like that had once mentioned something like that to him. Talking about how systems were supposed to help people that found themselves in similar situations as his.

{Systems?} was the vague response he got which only served to piss him off even more than he already was before, opening his mouth to angrily speak as if the voice was someone that was right in front of him.

"Yes. don't you know what the hell you are?"Devin yelled, his face squeezed together with intense irritation, not at all holding back his raging emotions.

"Obviously since you're in my head, you're probably partly responsible for why I'm not dead but in this strange world. If I die…you'll die too won't you?" Devin asked with a devilish smile on his face not at all caring whether or not the person in his head could actually see him.

'He could also be the former owner of the body but he doesn't sound like it. With how badly this body was treated, the former owner was most likely a goody too-shoes who was great at insulating pain'

{Oh…}

{OH! You finally figured out my secret identity, you are wise beyond your years.}

Devin gritted his teeth together and sighed, stopping himself from lashing out in anger as he did his best to speak in a calmer tone, preferably communicating with his mind since he felt too tired to continue talking.

"So? What exactly is the mission or what exactly do I have to do to go back?"

{Mission?}

"I hope it's not something impossible like rescuing this world from beasts or something as ludicrous as becoming king. If you wanted that then I should have gotten a better body," Devin continued speaking, thinking back for a second about how he died and the strange circumstances around it and how he could possibly be alive when he was almost a hundred percent sure that he had died.

{OH…OH…mission…}

"This system is somewhat stupid,"

{Well…your mission…your mission is to…hmmm, I'm not sure if I should tell you}

"If you don't then how the hell am I supposed to achieve it since that's why you're here," Devin replied painstakingly anticipating each word in a way that one would speak to a toddler.

{Oh…}

{OH…well then, I might as well tell you. Your mission is to…to…Become King. YES! Your Mission is To become King. The overall Ruler of this world}.
