Chapter 803 - 16

"Okay, class," you say, "that's enough on the syllabus and my expectations."

"We free to go, then?" Inez says.

She's brash, but you enjoy working with that kind of student. "After fifteen minutes? I wouldn't be giving you your money's worth."

"I'm looking forward to whatever you have planned next," Jayden says. If you ever forget about a planned quiz, Jayden will definitely remind you to give it. Even though he's ostensibly supporting you, you're already annoyed with him on the other students' behalf.

"Ready or not, let's get to it," you say.

You consult your short set of lecture notes. "I mentioned that summoning will teach you more about how universes work. I want to talk more about that.

"At its heart, summoning is about moving matter between universes instead of using the potential energy between universes. The trick is finding what you're looking for. That involves pulling information from universes without crossing into them. And information is related to energy." Puzzled looks greet your last statement. "I know, it sounds deeply weird to say that information is energy. Even if you're skeptical about that, as the class goes on you'll see how the techniques we use to extract information from universes are like the ones we use to manage pattern energy. Becoming better at summoning will make you better at channeling, regardless of the patterns you use."

"What if you take something someone really really needs?" Erick asks. Jayden rolls his eyes.

"That's an excellent question," you say. "The nature of summoning makes that unlikely. For one, it's far easier to summon common substances and items than more rare ones. For another, minds resist pattern magic. Any object that's being used by an intelligent being is difficult to get, so instead the summoning pattern pulls from a neighboring universe where the object isn't so closely tied to someone."

You turn to your next page of notes to discover that it's blank. Either you forgot part of your notes or you didn't finish planning your lecture.
