The steps to Carter Hall, like the ones to all buildings on the quad, are broad and short and an odd depth, like the workers who made them didn't know how big humans were. You have either to make a half step before the next riser, or else take a huge step forward and up. It gives you a stuttering, halting gait.
Once in the building, the memory pattern pulls you on.
Carter Hall's basement holds multiple storage rooms crammed with old filing cabinets, dated office furniture, and broken overhead transparency projectors from the previous century. It's oddly comforting to be back down here.
You step quickly as the pattern tugs you to one storage room at the end of the dark hall. It's cavernous, the size of a lecture hall, and remarkably empty given how full the other rooms are.
When you step inside, time jumps. New students throng the room. They're waiting for placement testing prior to classes.
