Immediately, you start kicking out, putting your full force into trying to break through the vines gripping your ankles. At first, you're barely able to shift your feet, but you keep thrashing as hard as you can, eventually feeling some give.
"Quickly, Kan," Max urges. "You don't have much longer."
You throw yourself into a frenzy, kicking as hard as you're able. Then, suddenly, you kick straight out, your feet unbound.
With a final agonizing effort, you're able to plant your foot on firmer ground, wrenching your remaining limb free of the vines' embrace with a loud, almost organic tearing sound.
You stagger, hopping on one foot. You're exhausted, drenched in sweat, but you're free.
Once you're past the skeletons, managing to avoid getting caught once again, the rough path that you've been following splits. Now, three different routes spread out, each carving their own way through the trees.
You look, not particularly hopefully, at Max. "Still no chance you can tell which way she went?"
The werewolf shakes his head. "Not unless she's marked any of the trees, which is probably an outside chance. There's no way of knowing."
Sonia sighs. "Let's split up, gang?" she suggests darkly. "I'm getting a bad vibe from this."
"Me too," you admit. "But we need to find Grace, or whatever she's heading towards. And it'll be faster the more ground that we can cover."
There's some visible reluctance but no outright argument, and then it's time to arrange the order.
"You and Will can't go together," Sonia says, shooting a poisonous look at Max. "If something happens, you'll need someone capable along with you."
You nod. There is something encouraging about the thought of undead backup.
